초록

Traditionally, both in Jewish and Christian communities, the story of Genesis 22:1-19 has been read as the story of Isaac, who did voluntarily give up his life. sIn so doing, the essential and fundamental subject of this story, that is, the trial of Abraham, has lost its way. Particularly, in the Christian tradition, the binding of Isaac has been extended to be interpreted as the vicarious sacrificial atonement of Jesus. This paper, however, reassures that the subject/topic of the narrative in Genesis 22:1-19 is the trial of Abraham by reading the text as a conflict structure. This narrative consists of the structure of the trilogy of conflict-climax-resolution. The conflict structure of the narrative reveals that the trial of Abraham provokes conflicts between God and Abraham and also between Abraham and Isaac. Although within the text we cannot find the explicit language of the tensions and conflicts, their silent journey to the Moriah and the one last communication between father and son present how much tension they had in their mind. The fact that the trial of Abraham is the main subject of this narrative is proved by the rewritings such as the book of Jubilees and 4Q225(4Qpseudo-Jubilees). Both pieces of Jewish literature during the Second Temple Period present that Jewish people had also struggled to understand this narrative about the divine trial. Thus these pieces of literature invented the figure 'Mastema' who suggested God to test Abraham, just as Satan did to God about Job. The object of Abraham's test was his fear of God. He had to show his fear of God, only by almost killing his own son. Genesis 22 teaches that the fear of God is not a conceptual word, but an action.
