This study investigates how linguistic and cognitive factors affect differences in the processing difficulty of subject and dative relative clauses (RCs) in Korean. The main findings are as follows: First, subject gaps were processed more accurately than dative gaps, while subject gaps were not different from dative gaps in response time (RT). Second, when the object in an RC and the head were matched in the case marker, similarity-based interference did not occur in either RT or accuracy. Third, inhibition ability, one of main components of executive function, facilitated the RT of subject RCs, while it inhibited the RT of dative RCs. Fourth, there was a main effect of working memory capacity in accuracy, but not in RT. Finally, RT decreased as a function of nonadjacent statistical learning ability irrespective of the type of RCs, while accuracy increased depending on adjacent statistical learning ability regardless of the type of RCs. These results suggest that the structural distance between a gap and its head partially influences the asymmetry in the processing difficulty of subject/dative RCs, and that there are meaningful interactions between syntactic complexity of RCs and various cognitive abilities.
