초록

이 글은 주전 6세기에 일어난 유다의 바벨론 유배의 신학적 의미를 탐구하면서, 여러 가지 이유로 자신의 본토친척 아비집에서 뿌리뽑혀 외국 한복판에 내던져진 난민들에게 적용될만한 생존전략에 대한 신학적 관점을 모색하는 서설이다. 이 논문은 구체적으로 포로기 예언자 예레미야가 조국멸망으로 인해 바벨론으로 유배되었던 바벨론 포로민들에게 ‘난민적 상황’을 창조적으로 승화시키도록 권고하는 신탁을 분석한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 우리나라에 와 있는 외국난민들을 목회적으로 도울 때 참조할만한 통찰을 제시할 수 있을 것이다. 예레미야 29장은 난민이 된 동포들에게 정체성 보존과 주변세계와의 상관성 둘 다를 견지하라는 예언자적 난민생존전략을 담고 있기 때문이다.
이 논문의 논지는, 예레미야 29장 1-14절이 예레미야의 난민목회적 권고를 담고 있으며 그것의 핵심은 바벨론 포로들이 정체성을 보존하면서 동시에 초청국가와의 평화로운 관계를 구축함으로써, 장래의 재활복구를 도모하라는 것이었다. 논거는 세 가지이다. 첫째, 예레미야는 바벨론 포로들이 자신의 정체성 보존을 위해 결혼하여 가정을 이루도록 권고한다. 둘째, 초청 보호 국가의 평화가 난민공동체의 평화로운 생존을 위한 결정적인 조건임을 강조하고 초청국가의 정치적 소요에 연루되지 말라는 예언자의 경고이다. 셋째, 유다 포로들의 난민 전락은 단지 불행한 재난이 아니라 ‘미래의 가나안 고토 복귀’를 위한 전지훈련적 성격의 연단이다. 예레미야의 주된 관심은 70년의 포로생활을 통해 영적인 정화를 경험하고 고토로 돌아온 바벨론 포로들이 이스라엘을 회복하는 데 지도력을 발휘하게 될 미래였다. 이 논문은 바벨론 포로들에게 보낸 예레미야의 편지는 단지 바벨론 제국에의 동화와 순응을 권고했던 것이 아니라 바벨론 제국 너머까지 이어질 하나님 백성의 역사를 향도할 언약백성으로 재활복구될 것을 권고했음을 논증한다. 비록 바벨론 유배경험은 강요된 난민 경험이었으나 예레미야의 권고대로 주전 538년부터 시작된 바벨론 귀환포로들의 고토복귀 행렬은 하나님의 세계통치와 그것에 걸맞는 자신들의 사명자각에 획기적 전환점을 제공했다.
끝으로 이 논문은 여러 가지 이유로 강요된 이주난민 신분으로 살아가야 하는 사람들의 생존전략에 걸맞는 하나님의 선교를 착상하는 데 유익한 통찰을 제공할 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

Through an exegetical inquiry into the theological significance of the 6th century BC Babylonian captivity that befell Judah, the present article seeks to tentatively present a theological tenet for making a survival strategy for those migrant refugees who have been thrown into foreign countries away from their home and mother land for various reasons. To this end, this essay undertakes a careful examination of the oracles of Jeremiah that were proclaimed to urge his Judean Babylonian captives to creatively cope with their refugees’ situations followed by the downfall of their country. It is hoped that this essay will offer some helpful insights for giving a pastoral service to those migrant refugees who have come to our country these past several years.
The thesis of the present essay is that Jeremiah 29:1-14 contains a theological tenet that will be helpful for undertaking a pastoral ministry for migrant refugees and its central tenet is twofold: identity conservation and peaceful relationship with host country, which will serve to fulfill their long-term rehabilitation. Three supporting argumentations have been presented for this central thesis. First. Jeremiah exhorts his fellows Babylonian captives to make a family in order to preserve their national identity. Secondly, the prophet urges them to establish a peaceful relationship with their host country lest they should be involved in any political revolt against their host country. Thirdly, Jeremiah assures them that the fall of the Judean people to Babylon and their subsequent captivity are not simply a disaster but a purgatory discipline that will prepare them to shoulder the responsibility of restoring their country in the future. Declaring the Babylonian exiles as a “good fig-tree,” the symbol of a people covenanted to God, Jeremiah prophesied that they would play a leading role in the restoration of the whole nation of Israel by being renewed and purified in their landlessness. While suffering a forced globalization by being hurled into the midst of the Babylonian empire, they were supposed to fulfill the divine hope and expectation that would sustain them as a landless people until a new future dawned upon them. Building up a spiritual community in the midst of Babylon, they were urged first to seek peace in Babylon even during its political turmoils, and to wait for the time of God’s rehabilitation. Through the oracle of Jeremiah 29:1-14, God exhorts the Babylonian exiles to prepare for national restoration through spiritual purification from within the global hegemony of Babylon, rather than commanding them to blindly subjugate themselves to the power politics of the globally dominant empire. Therefore, Jeremiah’s letter to the Babylonian exiles in Jeremiah 29:1-14 was a divinely planned strategy of renewing and rehabilitating the people of Israel as Yahweh’s covenanted people, as opposed to a real, political mandate that the Babylonian exiles should adjust to Babylonian reign forever. Forced globalization as it was, the Babylonian exiles’ 70 year long captivity turned out to be a critical moment for the realization of their national vocation as attested in the subsequent history of the three waves of return to their mother land, which began with the first return of the Babylonian exiles under the spur of the edict of Cyrus in BC 538. It is hoped that Jeremiah’s exhortation will be applicable to modern forced migrant refugees as they strive to survive various disasters that befell them. The Christian church’s missional outreach to them will help them survive their dislocations and other tribulations in the manner of Missio Dei.
