국어의 절과 문장의 관계에 대한 재론 -체계기능언어학의 관점- (Revisting the relationship between clauses and sentences in Korean -Perspective from Systemic Functional Linguistics-)

초록

이 글의 목적은 체계기능언어학(Systemic functional linguistics)의 관점에서 절과 문장의 관계를 검토해 보고, 이를 통해서 국어의 완결절, 비완결절의 정립 가능성을 논의해 보는 것이다.
그동안 국어문법서들에서 절과 문장의 관계가 불분명하여 여러 학자의 문제제기가 있었다. 본고는 우선 통사 구조적으로 절과 문장의 관계에 문제가 있음을 지적하였다. 첫째는 문장의 통사핵에 대한 매우 불분명한 태도이고, 둘째는 문장의 보충어 자리에 다른 최대투사(문장)을 허용하지 않는다는 것이다. 그 외에도, 선행 연구자들이 밝혔듯이, 절과 문장의 정의는 음운론적, 통사론적, 의미․화용론적 특성에 따라서 요구되는 조건이 이질적이라는 점을 지적했다.
이와 대조적으로 SFL에서는 언어를 다양한 층위(strata)의 복합적인 기호 체계로 이해한다. 이에 따르면 어휘문법 층위는 세 가지 대기능(meta function), 즉 관념적 대기능, 대인적 대기능, 텍스트적 대기능에 따라 독립적으로 실현된다. 그리고 각각의 층위는 독립적인 구조적 계층(rank)을 갖는다. 어휘문법 층위(대인적 대기능)의 ‘절’은 ‘주술부-서법부’ 구조를 가지며, 이것은 표기(정서법) 단위인 문장(‘종결어미 형태 + 문장부호(., !, ?))’과 층위적으로 구별된다.
한편, 어휘문법 층위에서 완결절과 비완결절을 구별하는 이유는 이 둘의 통사구조상의 위계가 다르기 때문이 아니라, 의미, 기능상의 차이 때문이다. 즉 완결절, 비완결절은 ‘명제’나 ‘제안’의 발화기능을 가지는 투사절(인용절)과 단순 수식절의 의미 특성을 구분하는 데 활용할 수 있다. 그리고 절의 통사핵인 서법 의미의 실현 여부를 따져서 완결절과 비완결절을 구별함으로써 이른바 정형절의 정도성 문제를 비완결절의 범위 안에서 개념적 모순 없이 설명할 수 있게 된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between clauses and sentences from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics, and to discuss the possibility of establishing the definitions of complete and non-complete clauses in Korean.
Until now, the relationship between clauses and sentences in Korean grammars has been unclear, which has caused problems for many scholars. This paper first points out that the relationship between clauses and sentences is problematic in terms of syntactic structure. First, there is a very unclear attitude toward the syntactic head of a sentence, and second, there is no other maximal projection (sentence) allowed in the place of the complement of a sentence. In addition, as previous researchers have pointed out, the definitions of clause and sentence have heterogenous requirements for phonological, syntactic, semantic․pragmatic properties.
In contrast, SFL understands language as a complex system of symbols with different strata. According to this view, lexico-grammatical stratum is realized independently according to three meta-functions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. And each level has an independent structural rank. The clause at the lexico-grammatical level (interpersonal function) has the structure of '[Subject-Predicate]+[Mood]’, which is strati-graphically distinguished from the sentence(‘ending form+punctuation marks(., !, ?))’, which is a orthographic(written) unit.
On the other hand, the reason for distinguishing complete and non-complete clauses at the lexico-grammatical level is not because of their different syntactic ranks, but because of their semantic and functional differences. That is, complete and non-complete clauses can be used to distinguish the semantic characteristics of ‘projection’ clauses(quotation clauses) that have the speech functions of 'proposition' or 'proposal' and simple modifier clauses. And by distinguishing between complete and non-complete clauses based on whether the syntactic head of the clause(the mood meaning) is realized or not, the problem of the degree of the so-called ‘Finiteness’ can be explained without contradiction within the scope of non-complete clauses.
