한국어 관형절 어순에 대한 실험통사론적 연구 (An experimental syntactic approach to orderings of Korean adjectival clauses)

초록

This paper, based on the experimental syntactic approach, investigates restrictions on relative orderings of Korean adjectival clauses, and discusses theoretical implications on research of adjectival clauses as well as nominal structures in Korean. The experiment result shows that adjectival clauses tend to position in the ordering of ‘long complement clause > verbal relative clause > short complement clause > adjectival relative clause’. This result has three major implications. First, the simple NP structure, which has generally been assumed in the field of Korean grammar research, is not sufficient to fully accommodate these ordering restrictions, and a more elaborated nominal structure is required. Second, given that there are modifiers whose structures are smaller than regular clauses, it is necessary to take into account the sizes of clausal structures in establishing the system of Korean adjectival clauses. Lastly, there are still a couple of unanswered questions to be resolved in regard to the syntactic nature of long complement clauses. Such a discussion suggests that there is a close correlation between structures of nominal modifiers, their syntactic merge positions and semantic interpretations.
