초록

Lighting the literary truth in relation to the condition of the time in the study of ancient novels in the 19th century is a meaningful methodology. In particular, considering literary characteristics, novels are a genre that reflects social ideas and cognition of the public in the same period in the most proper way. Moreover, it is an appropriate genre to contain the public's thirst and discontent on the irrational reality. In this respect, the approach to <Damojeon> in terms of social changes in the late period of Joseon Dynasty as an external aspect is worthy and necessary enough in terms of reflection theory.
<Damojeon> can be understood with the prerequisite of understanding of the social aspect of Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century. In this period the nation faced confusions because of hostility between social classes and alienation of the public such as all sorts of riots and politicians' corruption. Meanwhile, power monopoly caused by sedo-politics made the Joseon society to sank deeper into the mire.
<Damojeon> mainly track a person, which is a characteristic of chronicle but at the same time, it brings a female main character with strong righteous indignation in front. In particular, this works is unique in the history of Korean literature since it is rare to see female main characters in Korean literature in its history.
The wirter Song Ji Yang wanted to argue through <Damojeon> that the law has to be exercised based on moral laws in order to correct the society as he felt pitiful of the cold-hearted social condition of the society of the time. In conclusion, <Damojeon> presented the right behaviors of rulers through the chivalrous female main character's ruling based on morality against wicked noblemen and properly reflects the social aspect of the late period of Joseon Dynasty.
