17세기 부여 무량사 명부전 불상과 발원문 분석 (Analysis on the 17th century Buddha statue and Votive Inscription at Myeongbujeon Hall of Muryangsa Temple in Buyeo)

초록

충청남도 부여에 위치한 무량사 명부전에는 지장보살삼존상을 비롯한 시왕상과 권속 등 23구의 존상이 봉안되어 있다. 최근 이 존상 가운데 지장상과 제1시왕상에서 발원문을 비롯한 복장물이 발견되었다. 현재 밀폐된 채로 남아 있는 복장공이 있어 앞으로의 조사를 통해 완전한 복장물이 나올 가능성도 높다.
원문에는 상을 만든 조각승은 물론 자세한 시주목록과 본사소임질과 연화질 등이 자세하게 쓰여져 있다. 화원질에 쓰여진 조각승은 모두 11~12명으로 수화원은 儀嚴比丘, 보조화원은 雲惠比丘가 잘 알려진 조각승들다. 의엄은 17세기 전반기에 활동한 대표적인 조각승인 수연의 제자로서 무량사 명부전 불상은 현재까지는 그가 수화승으로 만든 유일한 작품이 된다. 실제 허리가 긴 길쭉한 신체 비례라든가 길고 뾰족한 얼굴 모습 등에서 수연이 만든 불상과의 양식적 유사성도 확인된다. 상을 만든 조각승과 대좌에 쓰여진 일부 명문을 토대로 제작시기는 1640년경으로 추정된다.
현재 발견된 원문은 제작연대와 사찰명이 없어 원문과 시주질을 따로 만들었을 수도 있는데 이에 따르면 공개된 내용은 시주질에 해당된다. 즉 시주목록은 다른 발원문과 달리 매우 구체적인데 나무에서부터 금, 칠과 같은 불상을 만드는데 필요한 재료 그리고 복장물과 관련된 목록과 인등, 등촉과 같은 의식에 들어가는 용구 등이 매우 구체적으로 밝혀졌다. 발원문에는 본사의 스님들과 소임을 맡은 승려들이 적혀 있는 점도 특징이다. 여기에는 전라도나 경상도에서 활동한 승려들에 관한 지역이 표기된 점과 본사승려들이 관이나 외부에서 활동했던 내력 그리고 불상을 만들면서 음식, 불, 나무 등 소소한 일상을 맡은 승려들이 자세하게 적혀 있어 당시 승려들에게 분담된 활동 영역과 역할 및 사회적 연구에 중요한 연구 자료이다.

영어초록

Myeongbujeon Hall at Muryangsa Temple in Buyeo chungnam province contains twenty-three statues including those of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad and Ten Kings and their attendants. Recently, among statues, sacred object including votive inscription were uncovered inside of statues of Ksitigarbha and first Ten Kings. As a hole in sacred object was kept untouched, complete sacred object could be possibly uncovered by further survey.




The votive inscription reads sculptor monks, detailed donation list, workers list belonging to the temple and donator list attached to the temple. All members of sculptor monks are eleven or twelve including monk Uieom as main sculptor and monk Unhye as assistant. The Buddha statue at Myeongbujeon hall of Muryangsa Temple is the unique statue manufactured by monk Uieom as a head sculptor who was a disciple of Monk Suyeon, a representative sculptor in the early 17th century. The statue’s long slender body and long sharp face show similarities with the style of works made by Monk Suyeon. It is presumed that the statue was made around 1640 based on the sculptor and the inscription on the pedestal.




As the votive inscription did not state the manufacturing period and the name of the temple, the inscription and donation list were possibly written separately, and opned inscription content implies donator list. Compared to other votive inscription, list of donation article was described in detail such as the Buddha statue manufacturing material of wood, gold, and lacquer, sacred obeject related list, and ritual service goods of lanterns and candles. It is noteworthy that the votive inscription stated names of monks belonging to the temple along with their duties. It also described in detail about specific regional area where local monks in Jeolla and Gyeogsang provinces worked, monks’ activities at government offices or outsite temple who were belonging to main temple, and ordinary monks in charge of food, fire and wood. The votive inscription is important to study monks’ activities, roles and social relationships.
