백제 사비기 전달린 완의 계보와 지역성 검토 (Genealogy and Regionality of Bowls with Extended Rims of the Sabi Phase, Baekje)

초록

백제 사비기 전달린 완은 당시 주요 도시인 부여·익산에서 출토된다는 점, 그 수가 다른 토기들에 비해소량이라는 점 등으로 백제 고위 계층이 사용하였을 것으로 추정되는 기종이다. 그럼에도 사비양식토기 중 하나로 기원, 제작기법, 형식분류만 언급되었을 뿐 단일 기종으로 연구된 바가 없었다. 본고에서는 사비기 전달린 완의 출토 현황을 정리하고, 다른 정치체·시기 출토 전달린 완과 비교를 통해 그 계보와 지역성을 살펴보았다. 이와 더불어 용도를 추정해 보았다.
전달린 토기라는 용어는 ‘전이 달린 토기’를 통칭하여 사용해 왔기 때문에, 여기서 다루고자 하는 완 외에도 다른 기종과 혼용이 되고 있다. 이에 완이라는 기종과 전이 달린 형태를 중시하여 기왕에 ‘전달린완’이라고 부르고자 한다. 지금까지 전달린 완은 상류층의 배식용기로 판단해 왔으나, 출토 맥락을 검토한 결과, 배수 및 집수시설에서 주로 출토되어 의례적 용도로 사용했다고 보는 것이 더 타당하다고생각하였다.
계보를 파악하기 위해 고구려 이배, 백제 한성기, 영산강 유역 전달린 완의 속성과 제작기법을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 이배에서 사비기 전달린 완의 특징이라고 할 수 있는 선문타날흔이 한 점도 확인되지 않았으며, 구연단의 제작방법과 전의 절단 방법이 달랐다. 이외에도 속성에서 차이가 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 전달린 완이 고구려 유이민에 의해 직접 제작되었다는 설은 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있다고 생각된다.
마지막으로 지역성을 검토하였다. 익산은 여러 연구자들에 의해 사비기 주요 도시로 언급되고 있으나익산 출토 토기가 부여보다 격이 떨어진다는 의견이 있다. 그러나 규격과 형태 속성 분석 결과, 현 상황에서는 익산 출토 전달린 완이 부여 출토품보다 규격화되고, 다양화되었다고 판단하였다.

영어초록

Bowls with extended rims dating to the Sabi phase are believed to have been used by the Baekje elite, since examples have been excavated from the areas of Buyeo and Iksan, where major cities of the Sabi phase were located. The number of such finds are limited, compared to other types of vessels. A detailed study of this particular type of vessel has yet to be undertaken; bowls with extended rims have only been studied as an element of ‘Sabi Style pottery’, with focus on their origins, production techniques, and type classification. The present study aims to explore the genealogy and regionality of Sabi phase bowls with extended rims by comparing them with the bowls with extended rims of other phases and polities. Furthermore, an attempt was made to define the concept of the ‘bowl with extended rim’ and to establish its function.
‘Extended rim pottery’ was renamed as ‘bowls with extended rims’ in order to distinguish this type from other types of vessels featuring extended rims. In addition, the function of these vessels were inferred based on their excavation contexts. The existing research regards bowls with extended rims as food containers used by the elite but the majority of the examples have been recovered from drainage and water catchment facilities, thereby indicating that they served a ritual function.
The manufacturing techniques of Sabi phase bowls with extended rims and that of Goguryeo bowls with extended rims (‘Yibae’ vessels), bowls with extended rims of the Hanseong Baekje phase, and those from the Yeongsan River region were compared in order to explore the possible origins of Sabi phase bowls with extended rims. Paddled line patterns, which are a characteristic element of Sabi phase bowls with extended rims, could not be observed in the case of Goguryeo Yibae vessels. Furthermore the method used to cut the rims was different from that used for Goguryeo Yibae vessels. Differences could also be observed in terms of specific attributes. Therefore, while it must be acknowledged that Goguryeo culture and style generally had an influence in the Sabi phase, it is unlikely that Goguryeo craftspeople had produced the Sabi bowls with extended rims.
In terms of regionality, although Iksan has been regarded by many researchers as the main city of the Sabi phase, there has also been the view that pottery produced in Iksan was inferior to pottery produced in Buyeo. However, it was possible to confirm through standard deviation analysis that the bowls with extended rims from the Iksan area were more standardized than those from the Buyeo area. In addition, the manufacturing techniques applied to the examples from Iksan were found to be more delicate and varied.
