新羅 塼築模倣型 石塔의 특징과 전개과정 (The Characteristics and Development of Imitation-Brick Stone Pagodas of Silla)

초록

신라 석탑은 일반형 석탑과는 별도로 모전석탑 역시 나름의 양식적 계보를 형성하며 전개되었다. 모전석탑은 다시 형태에 따라 ‘전축형 석탑’과 ‘전축모방형 석탑’으로 분류할 수 있다. 그동안 모전석탑은 이형석탑의 한 줄기로서 연구되어 왔는데 특히 전축모방형 석탑은 나름 다양한 양식변화를 보이며 전개되고 있어 주목된다.
전축모방형 석탑은 기단부 형식에 따라 가구식기단, 괴체석기단, 자연석기단으로 구분할 수있는데 가구식기단은 다시 단층기단과 이층기단으로 세분된다. 괴체석기단은 경주에서만 등장하는 것으로 괴체석으로 쌓은 기단, 우주를 생략한 탑신, 계단형 낙수면 등이 공통점이다. 자연석기단은 자연암반 위에 탑신부를 조성한 것으로 현재 경주 오야리 석탑만 남아 있다. 한편, 이들의 분포 현황을 보면 경북지역에만 집중되어 있는 것을 알 수 있는데, 특히 괴체석기단과 자연석기단은경주에서만 보이고 있어 지역적 특징을 보인다.
전축모방형 석탑 가운데 가구식기단이 가장 먼저 건립되었다는 것은 이견이 없으나 괴체석기단과 자연석기단의 선후관계는 검토할 필요가 있다. 괴체석기단은 그동안 자연암반을 기단으로 삼는 형식에서 영향을 받은 것으로 여겨져 왔으나 구체적으로 검토된 적이 없었다. 괴체석기단이 자연암반 기단을 평지에서 재현한 것이라면, 자연암반 위에 계단형 옥개석을 가진 탑신부를 올린 석탑이 선행하는 것이 합리적일 것으로 생각되므로 자연석기단인 오야리 석탑이 괴체석기단보다 선행하는 것으로 생각된다.
한편, 전축모방형 석탑이 건립된 지역은 고대 신라 교통로와 인접한 지역으로 이를 따라 이러한 석탑 양식이 경주로 들어온 것으로 생각되며, 이에 영향을 받아 경주에서 괴체석기단이 발생한것으로 파악된다. 이를 통해 볼 때, 전축모방형 석탑의 건립시기는 가구식기단, 자연석기단, 괴체석기단의 순으로 전개되었음을 알 수 있다.
괴체석기단 석탑의 마지막 예는 용장계 지곡 삼층석탑으로 남산 정상부로 올라가면서 자연암반을 기단으로 삼는 의도에 따라 남산의 자연석기단 석탑 발생에 영향을 준 것으로 보인다. 또한 고려시대에도 소형의 전축모방형 석탑이 꾸준히 건립되고 있어 양식의 계승이 이어져 왔던 것을 알수 있다. 마지막으로 동일한 양식의 석탑이 대부분인 경주에서는 매우 이례적인 양식인 전축모방형석탑의 등장은 신라 불교미술의 다양성과 개방성을 보여주는 것으로 이형석탑의 발생과 전개라는측면에서 미술사적 의의가 있다고 생각된다. 또한 이러한 양식의 출현이 이후 고려시대까지 지속되었다는 점에서 결국 이형석탑의 전개와 양식 계승의 한 단면을 이해할 수 있다고 생각된다.

영어초록

Stone brick pagodas of the Silla period developed separately from the conventional-stylestone pagodas in a unique style. They can be classified into the brick-structure type and theimitation-brick structure type depending on their format. To date, stone brick pagodas were studied as a part of non-typical stone pagodas. In particular, the imitation brick structure stone pagoda has been found to have undergone diverse changes in style, which attracts attention.
The imitation brick structure stone pagoda is classified into three types depending on the stylobate: those with post and lintel stylobates; stacked rock stylobates; and natural rock stylobates. Pagodas with post and lintel stylobates are further divided into those with a single-tiered stylobate and those with a two-tiered stylobate. Pagodas with stacked rock stylobates, which are only found in Gyeongju, are characterized by a stylobate formed from a pile of unrefined rocks, a main body without corner pillars, and a roof surface shaped like stairs. Pagodas with natural rock stylobates were built on a base of natural rock. Currently, the stone pagoda in Oya-ri, Gyeongju is the only remaining example of this type. The distribution of these pagodas is restricted to certain regions. They have been found only in the North Gyeongsang region, while pagodas with stacked rock or natural rock stylobates are specifically based in Gyeongju.
Although it is without doubt that post and lintel stylobates appeared before the other two types, further study is required to determine the order of origin between stacked rockstylobates and natural rock stylobates. It is assumed that the style of pagoda with stacked rock stylobates was influenced by the way in which a natural rock was used as a stylobate, but no detailed attempt has been made to prove it. If the stacked rock stylobate is a recreation of the natural rock stylobate on flat ground, it is reasonably assumed that the earlier form consisted of stone pagodas with the main body and stair-shaped roof stone placed on a stylobate of natural rock. Therefore, it is thought that the stone pagoda with the natural rock stylobate in Oya-ri predates pagodas with stacked rock stylobates.
Meanwhile, the areas where imitation brick structure stone pagodas were built were close to the transportation routes of ancient Silla, through which, it is understood, the style of imitation brick structure stone pagodas was imported into Gyeongju and affected the emergence of the stacked rock stylobates in the city. This indicates that the construction of imitation brick structure stone pagodas developed in the order of the pagoda with post and lintel stylobates, followed by pagodas with natural rock stylobates and pagodas with stacked rock stylobates.
The last example of pagodas with stacked rock stylobates is the three-story stone pagoda in Jigok village in Yongjang Valley, which seems to have influenced the construction of pagodas with natural rock stylobates in Mt. Namsan, since the natural rock stylobate was more preferred on the higher part of Mt. Namsan. In addition, small-sized imitation brick structure stone pagodas continued to be built through to the Goryeo period, which indicates that the style of Silla pagodas was passed down to the Goryeo period. Lastly, in Gyeongju, where most of the pagodas were general type stone pagodas, the imitation brick structure stone pagoda featured a very unusual style. The emergence of the imitation brick structure stone pagoda shows the diversity and openness of the Buddhist art of Silla and carries art historical significance in terms of the emergence and development of the non-typical stone pagoda. Furthermore, as its style continued to the Goryeo period, it helps to understand a certain aspect of the development of the non-typical stone pagoda and the transmission of its style.
