초록

이 논문의 목적은 「홍계월전」의 여성영웅 공간의 양상과 문학적 의미에 새로운 해석을더해 보는 데 있다. 세대를 초월한 강인한 여성영웅의 탄생이 가능했던 토대, 그녀가종횡으로 누볐던 ‘공간’의 양상에서 문학적 의미를 찾아보고자 한다.
Ⅱ장에서는 여성영웅 공간의 양상을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 유리(遊離)공간의 독립적 구성이라는 양상이다. 여성영웅소설만의 특정한 이야기 틀이 바로 ‘유소년기’의 고행담으로구조화된 유리 공간이다. 부모와 유리된 강과 갈대밭은 인간의 추악한, 혹은 본능적 욕망과 결부되어 등장인물의 내면을 투영한다. 이 유리 공간은 여주인공의 영웅성 내지는공명심을 자극하는 계기로 작용한다.
둘째, 이적(異蹟) 공간의 표면적 낭만성이란 양상이다. 전기소설과 영웅소설의 경우그 장르의 성격상 ‘낭만적 이적’에 상당 부분 서사적 음조를 받았다. 「홍계월전」 역시이러한 낭만적 이적 공간에 여주인공의 영웅성을 의탁하고는 있으나, 상당 부분 현실적서사로 이끌어 나가고자 한 흔적이 도처에서 돋보인다. 갈대밭 공간과 벽파도, 전장(戰 場) 공간은 여주인공 홍계월의 영웅성을 낭만적 이적으로 답보하면서도 현실적 개연성으로 이끄는 공간들이다.
셋째, 공훈(功勳) 공간의 배타적 잔혹성이란 양상이다. 여성 영웅화의 의지와 성격이극적으로 표출되는 곳이 바로 공훈 공간이다. 여주인공 자신이 안주하지 못한 남성성과여성성에 대한 배타성은 잔혹한 일면으로 나타나는데, 그 공간이 바로 공훈 공간이다.
공명심이 지나쳐 잔혹함마저 주는 것은 계월의 영웅성이 그만큼 당대의 제도와 관습을넘기 어려운 것이라는 사실을 방증한다. 한편으로 이 배타성은 한 인간으로서 부여 받은천품을 실현해 내는 방편으로 활용된다.
Ⅲ장에서는 여성영웅 공간의 문학적 의미를 탐색해 보았다. 남성의 이상적 지향점이었던 영웅상이 여성의 잠재된 능력을 일깨우는 장치로 문학 속에서 구가되었다고 해서유교적 세계관을 벗어났다고는 할 수 없다. 「홍계월전」은 여성영웅을 통해 천품의 실현이라는 유교의 기저사상을 구현하고 있으며, 더욱 견고한 유교적 세계관의 건설을 지향하고 있음이 드러난다. 여성영웅의 천품을 실현하는 방법으로 운용한 명분과 실리는 유교사상의 유동적이고 탄력적인 면을 시험해 본 문학적 수용이자 사회적 수용이기도 하다.
비록 제도적 결함을 노출시키고는 있으나, 유교사상의 본질은 여전히 와해되지 않고 세계를 구축하는 중심축임을 암시하고 있다. 그 역할을 사회의 소외 계층이었던 여성을통해 반증함으로써 유교적 세계의 타당성을 유도한 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is to add new interpretation to features and literary significance of space for heroines in Honggyewoljeon. Its literary significance was sought for in the situation that enabled a heroine to be born and features of ‘space’ where she bustled around.
Chapter Ⅱ of this thesis looked into features of the heroine’s space. Frist feature is structural independence of separated space. Its certain story-telling frame inherent to stories with heroines is a separated space structrualized into an odyssey of her childhood. The river and marsh separating her from her parents reflect its characters’ internal state in connection to ugly or natural greed of humans. This separated space in the beginning of the story is a focal structure that stimulates her heroism or ambition.
Second feature is superficial romance of separate space. Fictional biographies and hero/heroin novels have been considerably affected by narrative tone due to the genre’s nature. Honggyewoljeon alos puts its heroine’s heroism in this separated space of romance but its readers find its sporadic effort to unfold story in a realistic narration. marsh, Byukpado(Island) and battle field are the space that features its heroine, Honggyewol’s heroism in a romantic manner but leads them into realistic probability, which is an indirect proof that the novel began paying attention to the realistic writing of the modern time.
Third feature is the exclusive atrocity of feats. It’s space of feats that dramatically shows a woman’s will & nature to be a heroine. Space of feats is where males can’t control or suppress females and is also a background where exclusive punishment upon males that is impossible in reality is possible and further, fierce punishment is put upon other females. A heroine’s exclusion of males and females upon whom she fails to rest is shown as an atrocious aspect, and this is space of feats.
Honggyewoljeon’s space of feats can be divided into private space of feats and public space of feats. the former space, in which her husband Boguk, parents, kings and their subjects are involved, gains attention due to its exclusive nature shown especially toward her husband. The latter is space where a battle story that Gyewol confronts her enemy is unfolded and that she shows off her heroism with her tactics and audacity. By rousing not only terrible but also brutal sense of fear, she makes others unble to deny that she is the captain in general. Giving others even atrocity caused by this psychology of hers indirectly proves that her heroism hardly overcame the system and customs of her time.
Chapter Ⅲ of this thesis explores the literary significance of heroine’s space. One can hardly say that the novel goes beyond the Confucian view of the world just because heroism, which is the ideal destination of males, is used as a gadget arousing females’ latent ability. ‘Positive knocking on females’ social participation’ is not something beyond the then ideological frame but rather, shows efforts of an aspect to meet it. The heroine is depicted as a figure realizing the most essential values of Confucianism in the novel.
Essential values here mean discovery and usage of innate virtues.
Seen from this perspective, the novel, Honggewoljeon realizes the basic thought of Confucianism; realization of innate virtues through its heroine and moreover, pursues to build the Confucian view of the world more substantially. Causes and profits used by the heroine to realize her innate virtues are also literary & social acceptance resulting from trying the mobile & elastic aspect of the Confucian thought. Though it reveals institutional defects, the essence of the Confucian thought still doesn’t collapse, rather implying it’s the pivot that support the world. By indirectly proving its role through women, who were alienated from the then society.
