<전우치전>에 나타난 모순의 양상과 지향의식 (A Study on the Oriented Consciousness and Aspects of Contradictions in Jeonwoochijeon)

초록

<전우치전>은 소설의 장르를 명확하게 구분하기 힘든 작품으로 각기 다른 서사 안에 다양한 주제를 담고 있다. 실제로 <전우치전>은 탈재와 탐욕을 일삼는 관리의 행태를 비판하는 사회소설의 성격을 띠고 있으며, 다양한 계층의 고단한 삶을 담아내고 있다는 점에서 민중지향적인 성격도 갖는다. 그리고 그 이면에는 다양한 모순점을 내포하고 있다. 본고에서는 <전우치전>에 나타난 모순의 양상을 알아보고 모순을 통해 드러내고자 했던 지향의식에 관해 살펴보았다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
먼저 2장에서는 <전우치전>의 이야기 구성에 관해 살펴보았다. <전우치전>은 크게 태몽과 출생-술법의 획득-전우치의 활약상-서화담과 입산의 서사구조로 이루어져 있으며, 영웅소설의 특징과 사회 비판적인 요소가 내재되어 있다.
3장에서는 모순의 양상에 관해 살펴보았다. 주인공인 전우치는 효를 위해 불효와 불충을 저지르는 행동을 하며, 구제를 위해 탈취를 하는 모순된 인물로 나타난다. 또한 여성의 정절을 중요하게 여기는 조선사회에서 수행에 정진해야 할 중은 여인을 겁탈하기도 하고 전우치 또한 상사병에 걸린 친구를 위해 수절과부를 데려오기도 한다. 효를 위한 불효와 불충, 구제와 탈취, 여인의 정절과 훼절의 모순을 통해 <전우치전>은 인간의 욕망과 욕심을 우회적으로 비판하고 있다.
4장에서는 모순에 내재 된 지향의식에 관해 살펴보았다. <전우치전>은 불효를 저지르면서까지 노모를 봉양하려고 했던 전우치의 효를 통해 효의 실천과 지속을 지향하고 있다. 전우치가 악인을 징치하는 방법은 가혹한 형벌이 아닌 역지사지를 통한 자기 성찰과 인의 실현으로 스스로의 행동에 변화를 가져올 수 있도록 하였다. 마지막으로 인간의 불완전함을 인지하고 과욕을 경계하며 중도의 실천을 지향했다.
<전우치전>은 불완전한 영웅이 민중 속으로 들어가 일상에서 일어날 수 있는 가장 현실적인 문제를 드러내고 있다. 소설의 장르 경계를 허물고 당대 현실 문제를 모순이라는 문학적 기법을 통해 비판하고 있다는 점에 서사적 의미가 있다.

영어초록

The tale of Jeonwoochijeon makes it difficult to clearly categorize its genre, as it contains various themes within different narratives. The protagonist, Jeon Woochi, is a contradictory character who commits both filial and unfilial acts in the name of righteousness, and who acquires extraordinary abilities by stealing from others to aid those in need. This paper investigated the manifestations of these contradictions in Jeonwoochijeon and examined the underlying sense of direction that the contradictions sought to reveal. The results of this study are as follows.
In Chapter 2, this paper examined the narrative structure of Jeonwoochijeon which is broadly structured into the narrative elements of conception dream and birth - acquisition of magical powers -heroic activities and narriative stucutures between Seohwadam and Ipsan. In terms of content, it incorporates characteristics of a hero's journey and contains elements of societal critique.
The chapter 3 explored the aspects of contradiction within the stody. The protagonist, Jeon Woochi, engages in actions that contradict filial piety and loyalty in the pursuit of righteousness. Additionally, within the societal context of Joseon Dynasty, where women's chastity was highly valued, it takes instances of monks who should be on a path of asceticism abducting women, and Jeon Woochi himself bringing widows into the temple to help a friend suffering from lovesickness. Through the contradictions of filial piety versus unfilial acts, aid versus theft, and women's chastity versus the violation of it, Jeonwoochijeon indirectly criticizes human desires and greed.
The chapter 4 explored the underlying message within the contradictions implied in Jeonwoochijeon. The story centers on the protagonist, Jeon Woochi, who, despite committing unfilial acts, strives for filial piety by caring for his mother. It emphasizes the importance of practicing and maintaining filial piety. Jeon Woochi's approach to punishing wrongdoers doesn't involve harsh penalties but rather focuses on self-reflection and the realization of virtue to bring about personal change. The story encourages acknowledging human imperfections, avoiding excessive desires, and aiming for balanced actions. Jeonwoochijeon portrays an imperfect hero engaging with everyday people and addressing real-life issues. It achieves this through the literary technique of contradiction, which adds significant literary depth to the narrative.
