『中東戰紀』의 한국적 수용에 대한 고찰 (The Dissemination of “Zhongdong Zhanji” in South Korea)

초록

玄采에 의해 번역되어 한국 개화기에 널리 알려진 『中東戰紀』는 淸末 중국에서 활동하던 미국인 선교사 林樂知와 중국 선비 蔡爾康이 공동으로 번역·편찬한 中日甲午戰爭(한국에서 淸日戰爭이라 칭함)에 관한 저서다. 『中東戰紀』의 중국어판 書名은 『中東戰紀本末』이라 한다. 초편 8권, 속편 4권, 3편 4권 총 16권으로 이루어진 이 거대한 저서에는 甲午戰爭에 관련된 당시 淸政府 측의 上諭, 電報, 공문서, 그리고 세계 각국 신문매체의 보도, 중국에 와 있는 선교사나 중국 사람의 관련 글들을 대거 수록하였다. 통계에 의하면 『中東戰紀本末』은 영국, 독일, 프랑스, 러시아, 미국 등 여러 나라의 약 40여 개의 신문들의 보도와 논설을 인용하였다. 甲午戰爭에 관한 풍부한 자료는 이 책이 널리 읽히게 된 중요한 원인의 하나다. 이 책이 출판된 후 망국의 위기에 직면한 중국 지식인들에게 커다란 영향을 끼쳤을 뿐만 아니라 일본, 한국, 베트남에서도 번역되거나 유입되어 당시 국제사회에서 많은 독자들의 주목을 받았다. 1899년 한국의 계몽운동가인 玄采는 『中東戰紀本末』의 일부를 국한혼용체로 번역하여 『中東戰記』라는 이름으로 황성신문사에 의해 출판하였다. 당시 「황성신문」, 「대한크리스도인회보」 등 신문에서 모두 『中東戰紀』에 관련 논설을 발표하였으며, 조선말기 유명한 문인 黃玹이 『梅泉野錄』에서, 郭鍾錫이 『면우집』에서, 田愚가 『간재집』에서 각각 『中東戰紀』를 직접 인용하거나 언급하였다. 이를 통해 당시 한국 문인들이 淸日甲午戰爭, 그리고 중국과 일본, 나아가 한국 자체를 바라보는 시각을 엿볼 수 있다.

영어초록

“Zhongdong Zhanji(中東戰紀)” was a great Chinese masterwork associated with the First Sino-Japanese War, jointly translated and compiled by Lin Lezhi (Young John Allen, 林樂知) who was an active American missionary in China in the late Qing Dynasty and Chinese scholar Cai Erkang(蔡爾康). The full name of “Zhongdong Zhanji” in Chinese was “The Whole Course of the First Sino-Japanese War”. “Zhongdong Zhanji” appeared originally as serials -- 8 volumes in first edition, 4 volumes in second serial and 4 volumes in third serial, and it was seen as a masterwork of a total of 16 volumes. “Zhongdong Zhanji” featured the Qing Dynasty's imperial edicts, telegraphs and official documents which were associated with the First Sino-Japanese War, and international news media coverage of this War as well as related articles written by those missionaries living in China and a number of Chinese intellectuals. According to statistics, “Zhongdong Zhanji” collected myriads of news reports and comments on the First Sino-Japanese War in more than 40 newspapers from many countries like Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia, and America. By virtue of the richness of content, “Zhongdong Zhanji” became a best-selling book soon after its publication, and had rather a large influence on Chinese intellectuals who were on the verge of national subjugation. Moreover, after “Zhongdong Zhanji” was introduced to Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and other countries, it received quite some international attention of the times. In 1899, Hyun Chei(玄采), South Korea's Enlightenment thinker, sorted out those materials pertinent to Joseon Kingdom, and translated into “Zhongdong Zhanji” by adopting the mixed translating style of Korean language and Chinese characters. “Zhongdong Zhanji” in Korean also drew considerable attention the moment it was published by Hwangseong Shinmun(皇城新聞). At that time, some Korean popular newspapers like Hwangseong Shinmun and Korea Christian Advocate also published some relevant reviews on “Zhongdong Zhanji”. In addition, “Zhongdong Zhanji” was referenced or dealt with in this period by Korean famous writer Hwanghyun(黃鉉) in "Maechenyalok(梅泉野錄", Korean scholar Kwak Zhong Seok(郭鐘錫) in the "Mianwujip(俛宇集)", and Chun Wu(田愚) in "Kanzaijip(艮齋集)". By means of newspaper coverage and pertinent reviews on “Zhongdong Zhanji”, we can have a general view of South Korean Intellectuals' standpoints and perspectives in terms of the First Sino-Japanese War as well as three countries concerned ----China, Japan and Korea.
