전 근대 조계종사 연구의 현황과 과제 (Current Status and Future Tasks for Research into The Pre-modern History of The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism)

초록

이 논문은 근대 이전 조계종 역사와 관련한 그동안의 연구 성과를 분석하고,향후의 연구 과제를 함께 제시해보기 위한 목적을 지니고 작성되었다. 물론 ‘조계종사’와 ‘한국선종사’, 또는 ‘한국불교사’와의 불분명한 경계를 감안할 때, ‘조계종사’라는 이름 아래 포함시킬 수 있는 연구 성과는 그 범위를 설정하는 것에서부터 다양한 견해가 제시될 수 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 분석 범위와 대상을설정함에 있어 필자의 임의성이 강하게 반영된 연구사 논문이라는 점을 먼저밝혀두고자 한다.
필자는 그동안 발표된 전 근대 조계종사 연구의 주요 성과를 다음과 같은 네가지 주제로 나누어 본문에서 살펴보았다.
첫째, 9산선문의 역사를 중심으로 한 조계종 성립사 연구 둘째, 종조 관련 연구 셋째, 고려중기 조계종의 전개양상과 관련한 연구 넷째, 한국 선불교 법통설과 관련한 연구본문에서 상세하게 살펴본 것처럼, 전 근대 조계종사와 관련한 연구는 이미상당한 양에 달하고 있다. 하지만 이같은 성과에도 불구하고, 조계종사의 올바른 이해를 위해 앞으로 해결해 나가야 할 연구과제 또한 적지 않다는 생각이 든다. 본문에서 언급된 내용을 바탕으로, 향후 전 근대 조계종사 연구의 학문 발전을 위해 해결되어야 할 과제 몇 가지를 제시해 보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, ‘조계종사’가 다루어야 할 학문 범주에 관계된 인식의 문제 둘째, 한국불교 종파사와 관련한 연구 부진의 문제 셋째, 叢林, 談禪法會, 九山門都會, 『선문조사예참의문』 등에 대한 보다 구체적인 분석의 필요성 넷째, 관련 자료의 수집과 분석에 조금 더 많은 노력을 기울여 나가야 할 필요성

This study aims to analyze the research results that have been performed related to the “history of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism”(hereafter “Jogye Order history”) and to propose research tasks for the future. Considering the unclear boundaries between the Jogye Order history, the history of the Korean Seon School, and the history of Korean Buddhism, there may be various opinions on setting up the scope of research results that can be included under the category of Jogye Order history. Thus, admittedly the study strongly reflects the author’s judgment in setting up the scope and subjects for analysis.
The study examines major research results into the pre-modern history of the Jogye Order that have already been published by dividing them into four themes as follows.
First, research on how the Jogye Order was established with a focus on the history of the Nine Mountain Schools of Korean Seon(Gusan Seonmun).
Second, research related to the founders of the Jogye Order.
Third, research on the developmental patterns of the Jogye Order in the mid-Goryeo dynasty.
Fourth, research related to the Buddhist lineage tradition theory(法統說) of Korean Seon Buddhism.
As has been reviewed in detail in the study, considerable research has already been accumulated related to the pre-modern history of the Jogye Order. However, in spite of this, there are still more than a few research tasks to be done for the sake of a correct understanding of Jogye Order history.
Following are some tasks to be resolved in the future for an academic development of research into Jogye Order history.
First is the perception problem related to the academic scope that must be dealt with regarding Jogye Order history.
Second is the lack of research on the history of religious sects in Korean Buddhism.
Third is the necessity for more concrete analysis on the following: chongnim(comprehensive monastic training complexes; 叢林), damseon beophoe(Dharma gatherings discussing Seon; 談禪法會), Gusanmundohoe(Association of Monastics in the Nine Mountain Schools; 九山門都會), and Seonmun josa yechammun(The Anthology of Veneration of and Repentance to the Thirty-Three Seon Patriarchs; 禪門祖師禮懺文).
Fourth is the necessity of putting more effort into collecting and analyzing related resources.
