이옥 열녀전의 문예적 특성과 한계 (Literary Characteristics and Limitations in the Yeolnyeojeon of Lee Ok)

초록

이옥의 열녀전은, 그의 쾌락설적인 정(情) 문학론에 입각해 여성의 편성(偏性)을 소재거리로 즐겨 다룬 창작 습관의 한 결과물로 볼 수 있다. 그래서 여성 이념에 입각한 열녀전의 열녀들과는 다른 특성을 지닌다.
이옥의 열녀전에서, 열녀 서사는 열녀전의 기본 틀을 벗어나 있을 뿐만 아니라 열녀 됨의 동력이 정조 이념이 아니라 연민, 분노, 사랑 등 이옥이 이른바 편성, 즉 정이다. 그래서 열녀 서사는 여성의 정조 이념과는 거리가 있어, 신선하며 자극적이어서 가르침이 아닌 공감을 제공한다. 그런데 의론은 발랄한 서사와는 걸맞지 않은 열녀이념으로 포장한다. 서사에 대한 풍부한 해석이어야 할 의론이 서사의 의미를 배반하는 격이다.
이옥은 또 생열녀를 찬양하였다. 순절해야만 열녀로 칭송받을 수 있는 사회적 분위기 속에서 이옥은 살아서 고통을 연장하거나 극심한 고통과 공포를 감수하면서 자신을 희생하며 사는 열녀를 입전하였고, 그런 생열녀의 서사는 풍부하고 고통스러울 정도로 자극적이다. 이옥이 생열녀를 찬양한 이유는, 살아서 열녀가 겪는 고통의 지속성과 공포의 강도 높음이 한 번 죽는 것보다는 비교도 할 수 없이 어렵다는 데 있다. 그런데 의론의 평가에서는 층위가 다른 남성 중심적 거대담론으로 지난한 열녀 고경의 의미를 무화하여 모순을 노출하고, 여성의 무한 희생과 봉사를 최고의 경지로 삼는 등 가부장 중심적인 가치관을 고수한다.
이처럼 이옥의 열녀 서사는 이념보다는 여성이 지닌 편성(偏性)에서 열녀성의 동력을 찾아, 이념에 매몰됨 없이 선진적이고 신선하고 충격적인 면이 많으며 재미있다. 이옥의 쾌락설적인 정 문학론과 합치하는 특성이다. 그러나 그러한 열녀 서사에 타당한 해석과 의미 부여를 할 수 있는 그에 걸맞은 철학을 가지지 못한 결과 서사와 의론의 모순을 초래하였다. 그래서 이옥이 작가로서 지니는 탈이념성과 새로움, 뛰어난 상상력과 문필력의 소유라는 큰 강점에도 불구하고, 여성 존재를 더욱 가혹하게 형상한 한계를 지닌 것이 그 실상이다.

영어초록

The Yeolnyeojeon of Lee Ok was mainly based on the literary theory in human affection from the hedonic aspect, thus, it exhibits a woman who has different characteristics from the women who appeared similar works that were based on the conventional female images.
A narrative description on yeolnyeo (a woman of virtue) in the Yeolnyeojeon of Lee Ok is out of the traditional frame of Yeolnyoejeon, and it also demonstrates that a driving force of becoming a yeolnyeo is not based on a sense of physical chastity but based on a so-called human affection including compassion, anger, or love, etc. In that regard, the yeolnyeo narrative description is trans-ideological, innovative, and provocative, accordingly conveying empathy to people, not a lesson. However, the discourses being spread in the postscript later are packaged with a traditional notion of yeolnyeo, which is not in line with the bright narrative descriptions. This is more like as if the discourses that should be a plentiful interpretation of the narrative description betrays its meaning.
Lee Ok complimented the so-called living yeolnyeo who is living by extending the level of pains or by sacrificing herself with taking the extreme pain and fear. The narrative description of a living Yeolnyoejeon is rich and stimulating. The reason why Lee Ok complimented the living yeolnyeo lies in that the continued pains and high intensity of horrors underwent by a living yeolnyeo are incomparably more difficult far beyond dying once. However, the evaluation of discourses sticks to the patriarch-oriented values with a giant discourse in different levels such as exposing the contradictions by neutralizing the meaning embedded in the extremely difficult pains of a yeolnyeo and regarding the infinite sacrifice and serve of women as the ultimate stage.
As such, the narrative description of Lee Ok seeks a driving force of becoming a yeolnyeo from the biased emotions of women rather than ideology and is interesting because it is trans-ideological, advanced, innovative, and shocking. This is the very property that is in line with the literary theory in human affection from the hedonic aspect of Lee Ok. The contradiction between discourse and narrative description, however, has been caused because of not having appropriate philosophy that is able to assign a valid interpretation and to grant significance to advanced narrative descriptions on yeolnyeo. Despite the great strengths of Lee Ok as a writer, for instance, a trans-ideology, the new and excellent imaginations, and a possession of writing skills, it is a fact that the Yeolnyeojeon of Lee Ok has a limitation that configured a female entity in the more sadistic form.
