금산사 미륵전 벽화에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Murals Painting of Maitreya Hall in Geumsansa-Temple)

초록

금산사 〈미륵전〉은 외부는 3층이나 내부는 한 층으로 이루어진 건물로서, 각층마다 ‘대자보전’ ‘용화지회’ ‘미륵전’이라는 다른 이름의편액이 걸려있다.
장엄 역할의 미륵전 벽화는 법당 출입 창호가 있는 1층과 2·3층정면을 제외하고 외부 1·2·3층 포벽 및 중방벽에 거의 빠짐없이 그려져 있는데, 위치에 따라 소재가 다르게 나타나고 있어 각 층별 그림의 주제와 내용을 살펴보았다. 단, 2·3층은 건물 구조상 내부에 그림을 그릴 수 없게 되어 있는데 비해 1층은 내부 포벽에도 그림이 그려져 있어, 1층의 경우는 이를 포함하여 고찰해보았다.
이와 더불어 각 층별 위치별로 그림솜씨가 약간 다름이 파악되었는데, 이는 곧 시기를 달리 하여 그려졌음을 말해주는 것으로 미흡하나마 벽화에 대한 편년 또한 시도해보았다.
〈미륵전〉 1층의 경우에는 불도들이 직접 기도하는 공간으로서 내부 포벽에도 나한도를 비롯한 묵죽도와 묵란도, 수묵산수와 화조도등이 그려져 있음을 볼 수 있으며, 중방벽은 건물 정면을 제외한 동· 남·북 3면에 많은 그림이 그려져 있다.
〈미륵전〉은 『미륵하생경』의 ‘용화삼회’를 바탕으로 하는 미륵하생신앙을 확립하기 위하여 점찰교법을 펼치는 공간인 만큼 큰 의미는하나일 수 있겠다. 그러나 각 층마다 각기 다른 이름의 편액이 걸려있어 층에 따라 성격이 다르며 그림 또한 그에 걸맞게 그려졌다. 즉, 〈미륵전〉은 도솔천에 거주하는 자씨보살께서 석가불이 열반한 이후이 세상에 내려와 화림원의 용화수 아래에서 3회에 걸친 법회를 연후 깨우침을 얻어 미륵부처가 된 다음 중생들을 제도한다는 하생신앙의 완성처를 의미한다고 하겠다.
미륵전 내외 벽화의 경우 비록 시기적으로는 후대에 조성되었다고할지라도 어느 정도나마 각 층별에 따른 성격을 파악하는데 자료적의미가 있다고 할 수 있고, 포벽과 중방벽의 위치별 그림의 표현기법및 양식특징에 따라 편년설정이 가능했다는데 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

Maitreya Hall(彌勒殿) in Geumsan-sa Temple is a building comprised of one storied on the inside and three storied on the outside. Hung on each floor are three inscribed boards of the floors’ titles : Daejabojeon(大 慈寶殿), Yonghwajeehoe(龍華之會), and Mireukjeon(彌勒殿).
The Murals Painting of Maitreya Hall are drawn on the entirety of its walls, also known as shell walls, found between the pillars of the roof, and on the main walls, also known as middle walls, standing underneath the eaves, except for those on the front sides of the first, second, and third floors where the entrance windows and doors are placed. The material of the murals seems to differ by location, so this study examines the subject and contents of each floor’s paintings. However, the inner wall of the second floor appears to be impossible to paint due to its architectural structure, and thus remains unpainted, whereas that of the first floor is painted. The paintings on the first floor were considered in this study.
In addition, it was found that the painting techniques on each floor slightly differ, which demonstrates that the murals were drawn in different time periods. Therefore, this study attempts to record the chronology of the murals, albeit in acknowledgement of its limitations.
The first floor of the Maitreya Hall is a prayer room for temple-goers.
The shell wall adorns a painting of Buddha’s disciples, and black-and- white ink paintings of bamboos, orchids, landscapes, birds and flowers.
Many murals are drawn on the east, south, and north sides of the middle wall, except that which is on the front side of the hall.
Maitreya Hall serves one important purpose: to practice Jeomchal- gyobeop(占察敎法; Buddhist fortunetelling), in order to establish a belief based on Mireuk Hasaeng-gyeong(彌勒下生經) scriptures that Maitreya will come down to the world, become Buddha, and save humankind. However, the floors have different titles and inscribed boards that signify different characters, and the paintings are drawn to match each floor’s character. In other words, Maitreya Hall represents the completion of faith that after Sakyamuni’s nirvana, Bodhisattva will come down to the world from the sky, hold three ceremonies under Yonghwa Tree(龍華樹) in Hwarim Garden(華林園), reach nirvana, become Maitreya, and redeem humankind.
In the case of mural paintings inside and outside of the Maitreya Hall, even if these were constructed at a later period, their significance as data lies in figuring out the characters of each floor level to a certain extent.
This study also holds significance that the recording of chronology is possible based on the technique and form of Murals Painting on different locations of shell and middle walls.
