<靑陽義婦傳>의 구조와 의미 (The Structure and Meaning of Cheongyanguibujeon)

초록

<청양의부전>은 병자호란을 배경으로 하는 전란전이다. 본고가 <청양의부전>을 논의한 이유는 이 작품이 가지고 있는 전란전으로서의 가치와 소설사적 의의에 있다.
<청양의부전>은 두 개의 구조로 이루어져 있다. 논리체계로서 액자구조와 서술체계로서 혼사갈등구조가 그것이다. 작자는 액자구조를 통해 현실비판의식을 보여주고 있으며, 혼사갈등구조를 통해 현실극복의 모습을 보여주고 있다. 두 개의 구조는 상호 협력적이다. 액자구조는 혼사갈등구조를 통해 논의의 근거를 얻고, 혼사갈등구조는 액자구조를 통해 논의의 가치를 얻고 있다.
액자구조를 통해 보여준 작자의 현실비판은 매우 구체적이고 직설적이었다. 현실비판의 주된 내용은 당대 양반사대부 관리들의 처세에 관한 것이다. 작자는 액자 속 의부의 이야기에 빗대어 그들의 처세를 비판하고 있다. 액자 속 이야기는 혼사갈등구조로 되어 있다. 작자는 만남에서부터 혼인까지의 과정을 그리면서 전란으로 인한 의부의 상흔을 치유하고 있다. 이 작품의 가치는 여기에 있다. 전란의 참상을 그리는 전들은 많아도 전란으로 인한 상흔을 치유하는 작품은 이 작품 외에는 달리 보이지 않기 때문이다.
<청양의부전>은 전이면서도 인물의 일생을 그리지 않고 혼사라는 단일한 사건 중심으로 서술되고 있다. 그런데 사건은 인과적 계기에 따라 서술되고 있으며, 주변인물들이 존재의 독자성을 가질뿐더러 입전인물과 주변인물의 지속적 상호관계에 의해 사건이 전개되고 있다. 구체적으로 살펴보면 작품은 입전인물인 의부, 선비, 선비의 외종형 내외간의 지속적인 얽힘을 통해 사건이 발전된다. 그리고 선비 및 그 외종형 내외는 입전인물인 의부와 대등한 조명을 받고 있다. 이 외에 이 작품은 인물들 간의 상세한 대화와 상황의 허구적 재현, 그리고 플롯의식 등을 보여주고 있다. <청양의부전>이 소설인 이유가 여기에 있다.
<청양의부전>이 전으로 창작되었으면서도 소설이 된 것은 서술의식 때문이다. 전의 서술의식은 픽션과 논픽션의 경계를 쉽게 넘나드는 데 있다. 논픽션을 장르적 속성으로 하면서도 창작의도가 분명한 전의 작자들은 전을 창작하면서 최대한 픽션을 지향하려고 한다. 반면에 전을 읽는 독자들은 전은 논픽션이어야 한다는 생각을 갖고 있다. 독자를 고려하지 않을 수 없는 전의 작가들은 픽션을 지향하면서도 논픽션인 것처럼 지어야했다. 그런데 조선후기에 이르러 전의 작자들은 이러한 데서 조금 자유로워졌다. 그렇게 된 데에는 여러 가지 이유가 있겠으나 가장 큰 이유 중의 하나는 전란이다. 전란이라는 특수한 상황이 전의 작자가 픽션지향의식을 자유롭게 발휘하게 해주었고 그러한 현상이 조선후기에 이르러 사회 분위기와 어우러지면서 전의 장르변화를 가져온 것이다.

영어초록

<Cheongyanguibujeon> is a war ‘Jeon’, a biography of a person her or his criticism on society with educational lesson, based on the Manchu war in 1636. This writer decided to write <Cheongyanguibujeon> in light of the fact that this Jeon has a value of a war story and significance of novel history.
<Cheongyanguibujeon> consists of two parts: one is a story- within-a-story on a logical structure and another is a marriage conflict on a descriptive structure. The author shows critical mind about realities through the story-within-a-story structure while the marriage conflict story illustrates to overcome difficulties from realties. These two parts connect each other in the story. The first structure gains a basis about discussion and the second structure obtains values of discussion.
Through the story-within-a-story, the author’s criticism on society is considerably specific and direct. The main story about criticism on society is focusing on noblemen’s lives. This novelist criticizes noblemen’s behaviors compared to ‘Uibu’, a righteous woman, in the story. The story of within a story composes of the marriage-conflict structure. This creator describes Uibu’s first meeting with her man to her wedding day and how her scars from the war were treated; it is the value of this literature. There are numerous Joen which depict the terror of wars, but there are few Jeon which portray the treatment of scars from wars.
Even though <Cheongyanguibujeon> is a Jeon, it does not describe the whole life of the character, it illustrates one simple story which is the main Uibu's marriage. The event, however, describes in chronological order and supporting characters have special existence. In addition, the story develops on continuous relations between main characters and supporting characters. To be more concrete, <Cheongyanguibujeon> develops events based on continuous conflicts with peoples: Uibu, ‘Seonbi’, a nobleman, and supporting characters who are cousins of Seonbi’s. Seonbi and his cousins are equally important characters with Uibu. Furthermore, <Cheongyanguibujeon> shows detailed discourse between characters, fabricated story of incidents, and a plot. This is one of the reasons for that <Cheongyanguibujeon> is a novel.
<Cheongyanguibujeon> created as a Jeon but it became as a novel because of the style of description. Jeons' description could easily cross the borderline between fact and fiction. Authors of Jeons who had own special creations were normally based on non-fiction but they tried to aim for fiction as possible. On the other hand, people who read Jeon consider that Jeon should be non-fiction. Jeons' writers ought to reflect on the readers; therefore, they wrote stories like non-fictions despite supporting fictions. However, these authors were free from the rule in the late of Chosun Dynasty. There were several reasons but one of the biggest reasons was wars. Wars were unusual circumstances and they changed authors’ method of narration to support freely fiction style. By the late of Chosun Dynasty, this phenomenon was harmonious with social conditions and caused changes about genre of Jeon.
