<전우치전>의 奪財 양상과 의미 (Aspect and literary history of seizing (taking assets) in Jeon Woo-chi Jeon)

초록

이 논문은 고전소설 <전우치전>에서 주인공 전우치가 도술을 부려 일으키는 여러 사건 가운데 탈재의 양상에 주목하며 시작되었다.
이를 위하여 먼저 실존인물 전우치의 삶의 공간이자 고전소설 <전우치전>의 배경인 조선 중후기의 사회적 모습을 통해 탈재의 원인을 살펴보았다. 임병양란이 지난 폐허와 다를 바 없는 조선은 작물 수확량 감소가 세량의 감소로 이어지고, 이는 곧 국가 재정의 위기를 초래했다. 지배계층의 기강 해이와 부정부패로 인한 많은 사회문제가 야기된다. 이들은 살기 어려운 민중을 더욱 옥죄어 그들의 것을 탈취하여 자신들의 배를 불리는 것에 급급하다. 또한 조선 후기에는 시장경제가 유입되며 몰락한 양반이 많아지고 상업으로 거부가 된 평민이 공명첩을 받아 신분 상승을 하는 예가 빈번해진다. 이는 더욱 심각한 신분질서의 붕괴를 야기했고, 이 과정에서 재산의 탈취는 곧 범죄이며 동시에 살아남기 위한 방편으로 나타나게 된다.
다음으로 <전우치전>을 분석하여 작품 속에 드러난 구체적 탈재의 양상을 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 서사의 단락을 구분하고, 탈재의 양상이 드러나는 삽화를 중심으로 탈재의 주체와 탈재 대상을 통해 작품을 분석하였다. <전우치전>에 나타난 탈재의 주체는 거의 대부분 전우치 자신이었으나, 사건에 따라 관리가 서민을, 도적무리가 민간을 대상으로 탈재하는 경우도 있다. 탈재의 양상을 탈재의 목적에 따라 개인의 욕망 실현, 민간의 삶 구제, 지배계층에 대한 저항으로 나누어 살폈다. 호정을 먹고 도술을 부리게 되어 막강한 힘을 지닌 전우치가 벌이는 여러 사건 안에는 탈재와 무관하지 않은 모습이 두드러진다. 전우치가 여우에게서 호정과 천서를 취하는 과정 역시 일종의 탈취이고, 왕을 속여 황금대들보를 수탈하거나, 가난한 이를 족자를 통해 돕는데 이것도 알고 보면 호조의 자산을 고직이를 통해 탈취한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 반대로 전우치에 의한 탈재는 아니지만 서민을 탈취하는 관리의 모습, 나라의 문제가 되는 도적떼의 모습 등도 탈재의 양상을 띤다 하겠다.
끝으로 <전우치전>에 나타난 탈재가 갖는 의미를 살펴보았다. <전우치전>은 그 작품화 양상이 남다르다. 실존인물 전우치의 기이한 설화를 받아들여 소설화하는데, 이른바 삽화편집적 구성이라고 하여 고전소설의 일반적 구성 방식과 상이하다. 지배체제가 흔들리고 시장경제의 유입으로 신분제도가 붕괴된 조선 중후기의 사회의 모습이 기인이었던 실존인물 전우치의 설화 속 여러 이야기와 만나 필요에 따라 확장과 각색이 이루어져 소설화 되었다. 이때 도술, 변신, 속이기 등의 모티프가 다양하게 활용되어 민중의 삶을 더욱 곤궁하게 하는 대상들을 향한 징계가 전우치라는 인물을 통해 이루어지는데 당대 민중들의 염원이 보태어져 기존의 영웅소설과는 전혀 다른 모습의 영웅이 탄생한다. 이 시기는 중세의 봉건질서가 붕괴되고 근대의 자본주의가 맹아한 때로 이러한 사회와 경제적 양상이 작품에 녹아든다. 봉건 사회의 기틀이 되는 수직적 상하관계의 엄격한 계급이 조금씩 무뎌지며, 자본이 곧 계급이고 때로는 상하관계의 역전을 일으키는 큰 힘이 되는 양상을 포착하고 있는 것이다. 계급을 막론하고 누구에게나 관심사였던 축재를 위한 탈재는 단연 사회의 문제가 되었다. 개인의 영욕을 위해서 때로는 사회로 재화를 환원하고자 탈재가 일어나는데, 그 양상이 <전우치전>을 통해 고스란히 드러난다. 지배계층에 대한 저항의식이나 힘없는 이들의 구제가 완벽한 영웅을 통해 구현되는 것이 아니라 민중이 원하는, 민중과 가까운 다소 기이한 주인공을 통해 이루어짐으로써 사회문제를 더욱 날카롭게 보여주고 민중의 염원이 보다 절실하게 담긴 작품이라 하겠다.

영어초록

This study begins with attention on the aspect of seizing among several incidents caused by Taoist magic from the protagonist Jeon Woo-chi in the classic novel Jeon Woo-chi Jeon.
For this purpose, I first investigated the cause of the seizing through the social appearance of the middle and late Chosun Dynasty, the background of the classic novel Jeon Woo-chi Jeon, the living space of the actual person Jeon Woo-chi. In Chosun, which was no different than ruins after Im Byung Yang Ran, the decrease in crop harvests led to a decrease in the amount of tax, causing a crisis in national finance. The ruling class's lack of discipline and corruption caused many social problems. They were busy fattening their stomachs by suffocating people who had a hard living and taking their wealth. In addition, in the late Chosun Dynasty, the market economy was induced, financially ruined noblemen increased and there were frequent stories of common people who were refused business raising their identity by receiving official proclamations. This led to a more serious collapse in the identity order, and in this process, taking assets was a crime and at the same time became a means for survival.
Next, I analyzed Jeon Woo-chi Jeon and investigated the detailed appearance of seizing in this novel. Jeon Woo-chi, who had enormous power by eating Hojung(fox’s spirit) and using Taoist magic, was not excluded from the taking of wealth in several incidents which is striking. The process by which Jeon Woo-chi intoxicates the fox using Hojung and Chunseo is a kind of seizure, and taking the golden beam by deceiving the king or helping the poor using scrolls can be considered seizing Hojo's assets through Kojigi. Conversely, it is not seizing based on Jeon Woo-chi, but management appearance of seizing common people and the appearance of a thief which is a country problem also displays the aspect of seizing. Through this taking of assets, Jeon Woo-chi's appearance of resisting the ruling class or helping the lives of common people is shown.
Finally, I investigated the meaning of seizing shown in Jeon Woo-chi Jeon. The artistic work aspect of Jeon Woo-chi Jeon is shown. It is different from the general composition of classical novels by the so-called illustrative editorial composition of accepting the odd narratives of the real figure Jun-Woo Chi and making them novels. The appearance of middle to late Chosun Dynasty society where the ruling class is shaken and the identity system is collapsed due to inducement of the market economy can be seen in the tale of the odd real character Jeon Woo-chi and according to need, is expanded and adapted into a novel. Here, the strong wishes of common people in those days is supplemented, giving birth to an entirely different hero appearance than those in existing hero novels. The protagonist Jeon Woo-chi Jeon is a different noble hero since birth who is not a perfect individual hero, he is a hero without absolute power who fights for common people's relief. His birth was normal, no different than any other person, but he obtained unique capabilities through Hojung and Chunseo, and consequently, this has led to the life of a friendly, but clumsy, hero. This is a work that more sharply shows social problems and more fervent wishes of the common people through the somewhat odd protagonist who is close to the common people and who the common people want, rather than realization of a perfect hero who has resistance consciousness over the ruling class or who provides relief to these weak people.
