초록

The purpose of this paper is not only to clarify that <Kiminhyangjon> is not the imitative work of <Janghwahongryenjon>, but also to clarify the meaning of <Kiminhyangjon> by the way the motives are placed through the concept of ‘metonymy.'
<Kiminhyangjon> does share a similar storyline with <Janghwahongryenjon>, as the stepmother plots to kill the children of her husband's ex-wife. However, the part of the 'marriage-story,' where Inhyang reincarnates and marries Yuhanlim, is not found in <Janghwahongryenjon>. <Kiminhyangjon> is earlier work than Garambon <Janghwahongryenjon> and also is different from <Janghwahongryenjon> in the way that it justifies the marriage of the couple. Moreover, the marriage-story in <Kiminhyangjon> has a similar motif to romance novels. This leads us to presume that <Kiminhyangjon> borrowed the stepmother motif from <Janghwahongryenjon> and the marriage motif from romance novels.
The arrangement of the motif is the crucial factor that decides the story of the work. The previous story becomes the reason of next story. In addition, the ending of the classical literature, which contains a lesson, is the most important part that decides the flow of the work. The marriage-story is arranged after the stepmother-story in <Kiminhyangjon>. Considering this, <Kiminhyangjon> is more closely related to romance novels than to that of stepmother novels.
The romance novel styles in <Kiminhyangjon> also exist in the stepmother-story. It can be seen in that the stepmother tries to plot, when Yuhanlim, the fiance, is away, and that Inhyang makes clothes for Yuhanlim, also that the identity tends to change from daughter to wife by the death of Inhyang's father.
It seems that the earlier studies could not achieve the clearer meaning of <Kiminhyangjon>, because they limited <Kiminhyangjon> to a stepmother novel type. It is needless to say that we cannot limit <Kiminhyangjon> to the romance novel archtype. How readers think about <Kiminhyangjon> will need to be studied in relation of the reader's psychology. In addition, its classification within the sub-category of classical literature needs more study in the future.
