初轉法輪의 南北傳 전승의 차이 (A Study on Differences of the Buddha’s First Sermon between Southern and Northern Buddhist Traditions.)

초록

본고는 초전법륜의 경장 기술을 중심으로 남북전에서 전승된 내용의 차이를 검토한 것이다. 이 역사적 사건은 초기 불전의 여러 율장과 경장에서 현존하지만 서술 구조상 율장의 受戒犍度가 경장 기술보다 더 오래된 형태로 알려져 있다. 따라서 수계건도의 내용 전개를 ⓐ - ⓕ로 표제화하여 비교 분석의 기초로 삼고, 그것으로써 재차 남방으로 유포된 팔리어 전승의SN56.11과 북방으로 유포된 산스끄리뜨어 전승의 DhCakP-dh [대응본들 포함]을 비교하였다.
수계건도와 남북전 전승의 경전 기술을 비교한 결과, 경전에 나타나지 않는 내용은 ‘첫 설법 대상에 대한 숙고’ 등의 도입부와 5비구 출가 이후의 후반부이다. 즉 경장에는 도입부와 후반부가 빠진 중간 부분만 설해졌다는 것이다. 이 차이에서 주목할 만한 것은 붓다의 정각이 제자들에게 어떻게 재생산되었는가라는 측면에서 경장은 5비구에게 법안이 열린 것을 성공으로 보고, 율장은 아라한과의 성취를 성공으로 보고 있다는 점이다. 경장 기술에 대한 남북전 자료의 비교에서 두드러진 차이는 ‘중도-팔정도-사성제의 의미 설명’이라고 표제화한 부분이 남전에만 나타난다는 것이다. 이에 비해 북전 자료들에서는 ‘三轉十二行相’에서부터 초전법륜이라 명명한다는 내용까지만 기술되는데, 이 부분은 경장이든 율장이든 초전법륜을 기록하고 있는 현존하는 초기의 모든 자료들에서 공통적으로 나타난다. 만약 어떤 수행자가 공통부분만 전승해 온 부파의 소속이라면 그는 삼전십이행상을 핵심으로 파악할 것이고, 공통된 내용 앞에 차이가 있는 부분까지 전승해 온 부파의 소속이라면 사성제에 대한 여실지견 이전에 선결 과제로서 팔정도에 더 주목할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the differences of tradition between the Pali and the Sanskrit scriptures about the first sermon of the Gotama Buddha in the early Buddhist texts. The first sermon of Buddha is the naming of “Setting in Motion the Wheel of the Law(Dharmacakrapravartana)”. As the Buddha who achieved the greatest enlightenment, he explained the four noble truths to his first disciples in Benares. In the narrative structure, this event is known in the form of an older version of description of the vinayas than contents of the scriptures. Therefore, for the comparison between the scriptures, Skandhas of Receive the Precepts were titled ⓐ-ⓕ, and then the contents of the scriptures handed down in two languages were compared and analyzed.
As a result of the comparative analysis, two differences were found, the first is the difference between Skandhas of Receive the Precepts and the scriptures, the second is the difference between SN 56.11 as the Pali text from the south and DhCakP-dh as the Sanskrit text from the north. The former is described only in Skandhas of Receive the Precepts, and is titled ⓐ, ⓔ, ⓕ which are not explicated in the two traditions, SN 56.11 and DhCakP-dh. Specifically, it is the beginning of "reflection on the subject of the first sermon" and the second half of when the five disciples are enlightened from renounce the secular life. The difference found in the latter is described only in SN 56.11, for example, ⓑ titled 'the middle way – the noble eightfold path – definition of the four noble truths'. On the other hand, in DhCakP-dh and its corresponding translations, it is described as 'Dharmacakra-pravartana-dharmaparyāya' from 'twelve applications in the three turns of the wheel of the law', namely, ⓒ, ⓓ. Furthermore, ⓒ, ⓓ is noteworthy because it is common to all pre-existing data, whether Vinaya Piṭaka or Sūtra Piṭaka, as a record of the first sermon. If a bhikkhu belongs to a school that traditioned the scriptures containing ⓒ, ⓓ, he would place emphasis on the four noble truths. But if he belongs to a school that has passed the scriptures that include ⓑ, ⓒ, ⓓ, he will consider 'the noble eightfold path' as a top priority.
