朝鮮時代 磁器製 誌石의 變化와 特徵 (Joseon Porcelain Epitaph Tablets: Their Evolution and Characteristics)

초록

誌石은 한 사람이 살아 있을 때 삶의 궤적을 기록하여 墓 속에 매장한 물건으로 墓와 죽은 사람을 결부시켜 후세에 오래토록 전하려는 것이다. 誌石에 기록된 내용은 本貫, 성명, 조상의 계보와 관직, 생일과 사망일, 관직과 평생의 행적, 가족관계, 墓의 위치와 坐向 등이 있다. 중국으로부터 석제 지석의 전통이 유입되어고려시대에는 석제 지석이 주류를 이루지만, 조선시대에는 새롭게 자기제 지석이 제작된다. 본고에서는 주자가례의 수용에 따른 자기제 지석의 변화와 특징을 통해 조선시대의 성리학적 명분론에 따른 사회 계층간의 특징을 규명해 보고자 한다.
조선시대 자기제 지석의 제작 배경은 두 가지 요인으로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 주자가례가 수용됨에 따라유교식 상장례제도가 정착되었고, 그에 따라 지석의 매장이 일반화되면서 지석의 사용이 증가하게 된 것으로생각된다. 18세기 이후 양반인구의 증가와 의식이 확대된 결과, 유교식 상장례를 실천하고자 했던 향유층이 증가되었고 그에 따라 자기제 지석의 사용이 증가하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 둘째, 성리학에 근거한 차별화된 예법에 따라 지석의 제작이 이원적으로 이루어지면서 왕실은 석제 지석, 사대부는 자기제 지석을 사용하였다. 그러나 사치스러운 장례문화의 규제와 석제 지석의 제작 및 사용에 따른 폐단의 대두로 왕실은 자기제 지석의 사용을 권고하였다.
자기제 지석의 기록방법별 특징을 통해, 기존에 알고 있었던 시문기법의 상·하한연대 기준을 제시할 수있었다. 또한 자기제 지석의 서체 변화로 볼 때, 우산리 9-3호 출토 〈白磁陰刻壬寅銘誌石片〉의 간지를 1482년으로 해석할 수 있었고, 그 결과 가마의 운영시기를 15세기 후반으로 파악할 수 있었다. 자기제 지석의 사용계층 분석을 통해, 장방형 청화백자지석은 당상관을 중심으로 사용하였고, 이는 청화안료가 일부 상위계층에서 향유하는 전유물이자 과시품이었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 사대부를 중심으로 사용하였던 자기제 지석은 내용의 기술이나, 형태의 변화에서도 관등에 큰 영향을 받고 있어 조선이 엄격한 계급적 사회였음을 나타내는 지표로서의 역할을 한다.

영어초록

The goal of the custom of burying a‘Jiseok,’the epitaph tablet recording the chronology of the dead was to pass down his or her feat to next generations, associating with the person and tombstone. Information recorded in this epitaph table included the name of the deceased, place of origin of his or her family, his or her ancestral genealogy, dates of birth and death, government offices held and biographical timeline, family members, and the location and orientation of the tomb. As introducing the tradition of stone epitaph tablets from China, there were many stone epitaph tablets during the Goryeo period. But porcelain epitaph tablets started to be produced during the Joseon period. This paper investigates the characteristics of the social classes along the Neo- Confucian lifestyle, according to the change and characteristics, accepting Zhu Xi’s Principles for Home Rites.
There are two factors in the background of the production of the porcelain epitaph tablet during the Joseon period. First, as accepting Zhu Xi’s Principles for Home Rites,Confucian funeral services system started to become widely practiced in society of the Joseon. This, in turn, appears to have made the burial of an epitaph tablet a widespread practice. From the early 18thcentury, there was the increase of the population belonging to the upper class(yangban ), spread of their consciousness, in consequence, more peopleespoused Confucian funeral services system; hence, a more popular use of porcelain epitaph tablets. Second, along the discriminated proprieties based on Neo-Confucian, two different types of epitaph tablets were produced: stone epitaph tablets for the royal house,and porcelain epitaph tablets for upper class households. It appears, however, that the use of porcelain tablets was also encouraged by the royal house to curb extravagant funeral customs and reduce abused problems associated with the production and use of stone epitaph tablets.
Based on characteristics related to the method of recording information on porcelain epitaph tablets, I was able to propose criteria for dating the various epigraphic techniques.
Further, based on the change in calligraphic style used in porcelain tablets, I was able to establish that the sexagenary cycle date on the fragment of the‘white porcelain tablet with the Imin year inscribed in intaglio,’discovered at Usan-ri Kiln No. 9-3 of Guang-ju, is 1482; from which, one can also induce that the kiln was operated in the late 15thcentury.
Meanwhile, through the analysis of social classes using porcelain epitaph tablets rectangle blue and white porcelain tablets were chiefly used among people holding a government office of rank or higher. I was also able to confirm that blue and white porcelain tablets were social status symbols reserved for a small minority of Joseon’s upper class members.
Porcelain tablets used by nobility were heavily influenced by the official rank in the description of the information and the change of their shape, and it appears that is the important indicator of the rigidly hierarchical society durong the Joseon period.
