제주목기 기와의 제 양상과 특징 (Various Aspects and Characteristics of Jeju Roof Tiles in the Period of Jeju-mok)

초록

본고에서는 제주목기 기와가 출토된 유적 중 조업시기가 한정적인 생산유적과 층위 파악이 가능하여 축조 시기를 알 수 있는 성곽 및 관영시설 5개소를 대상으로 출토 기와를 분석하였다.
제주목기 기와의 전개양상은 크게 3분기로 구분할 수 있으며, 1분기는 14세기 후반~15세기 후반, 2분 기는 15세기 말~16세기 후반, 3분기는 16세기 말 이후로 설정할 수 있다. 각 분기의 특징을 간략히 약술 하면 다음과 같다.
1분기는 직선계 문양이 중심 문양으로 사용되는 시기로, 고려시대의 대표문양인 어골문이 주 문양으로 사용되며, 후기가 되면 능형집선문과 사선집선문도 확인된다. 문양구성은 단독문이 많지만, 어골문의 경 우 3단문도 확인된다.
2분기는 곡선계 문양이 등장하여 사용되기 시작하며, 조선시대의 대표문양인 호상집선문이 유행한다. 직선계 집선문은 1분기에 성행한 어골문도 확인되나 전반적으로 비율이 약간 떨어지며 직선계 능형집선 문의 비율이 높아진다. 문양구성은 단독문이 많지만, 이 시기부터 곡선계 문양에 횡대가 부가된 3단문, 직선계 문양에 다단문이 나타난다.
3분기는 직선계와 곡선계 문양이 공존하나 곡선계 문양의 비율이 좀 더 높다. 이 시기의 주 문양은 직 선계 집선문에서는 삼각집선문・횡주어골문, 곡선계 집선문에서는 상하반전 호상집선문・다중반원문・다 중원문이 사용된다. 문양구성은 단독문보다 3단문과 다단문의 비율이 높다.
제주목기 기와의 특징은 어골문의 지속적 사용, 기와 수급 시 재사용의 일반화, 와전 기술 유입의 지 체현상 등으로 보았다. 이 중 와전 기술 유입의 지체는 제주목기 기와의 생산과 유통 등 기와 수공업 전반 에 걸쳐 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 사료되며, 전술한 어골문의 지속적 사용, 기와의 재사용도 이와 무관하지 않을 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 지체 현상은 섬이라는 지형의 특성상 원활한 교류가 쉽지 않았기 때문이지 만, 15세기 후반 또는 16세기부터는 육지의 문물이 이전보다 빠르게 들어오는 것으로 보아 공간적 거리 외에 중앙의 정치적 영향력 등 여러 가지 요인이 복합적으로 작용했을 것으로 추정된다.

영어초록

This thesis analyzed the excavated roof tiles targeting five fortress and government-operated facilities showing the period of construction and horizon based on the limited time of operation in the remains where the roof tiles in the period of Jeju-mok were excavated.
The development aspect of roof tiles in the period of Jeju-mok could be largely divided into three quarters such as the first quarter in the late 14th century~late 15th century, the second quarter in the end of 15th century~late 16th century, and the third quarter after the end of 16th century. The characteristics of each quarter could be briefly summarized as follows.
The first quarter uses the straight-line pattern as a central pattern. On top of using the fish- bone pattern which is a representative pattern of the Goryeo Dynasty as a main pattern, there are also rhomboid line-concentrated pattern and diagonal line-concentrated pattern in the later part of this quarter. In the composition of pattern, there are lots of single patterns. However, in case of fish-bone pattern, it is also possible to see the three-layered pattern.
In the second quarter, the curved-line pattern appears and starts being used. In this period, the banded line-concentrated pattern which is a representative pattern of the Joseon Dynasty gets popular. The straight line-concentrated pattern also shows the fish-bone pattern prevalent in the first quarter while the overall ratio gets lowered a bit. Instead, the ratios of straight-line rhomboid line-concentrated pattern and diagonal line-concentrated pattern get increased. In the composition of pattern, there are lots of single patterns. From this period of time, however, the three-layered pattern by adding lines to curved-line pattern, and the multi-layered pattern applied to straight-line pattern also appear.
In the third quarter, the straight-line and curved-line patterns coexist while the ratio of curved-line pattern is a bit higher. As the main patterns of this time, the triangular line- concentrated pattern and transverse fish-bone pattern are used in the straight line-concentrated pattern, and the upside down banded line-concentrated pattern, multiple semicircle pattern, and multiple circle pattern are used in the curved line-concentrated pattern. In the composition of pattern, the ratios of three-layered pattern and multi-layered pattern are higher than the ratio of single pattern.
The characteristics of roof tiles in the period of Jeju-mok included the continuous use of fish- bone pattern, generalization of reuse in case of supply and demand of roof tiles, and the lagged inflow of roof-tile technique. Especially, the lagged inflow of roof-tile technique might influence the overall roof-tile manual industry such as production and distribution of roof tiles in the period of Jeju-mok. As mentioned earlier, the continuous use of fish-bone pattern and reuse of roof tiles are probably related to this. This lag must be caused by the topographic characteristic of island where it was tough to have smooth exchanges. Considering the fact that the products of civilization from the land were flown in more quickly than before from the late 15th century or the 16th century, many factors such as the central political influence besides the spatial distance must be complexly working.
