한국불교의 전통과 元曉佛學의 고유성 - 원효의 ‘和諍 會通’ 논법과 관련하여 - (The Tradition of Korean Buddhism and The Uniqueness of Wonhyo's Buddhology - Focused on logic of HwaJaeng Hoetong -)

초록

이 논문은 한국불교의 전통을 한국의 대표 사상가인 芬皇 元曉(617-686) 불학의 고유성과 관련하여 살펴본 글이다. 한국불교 속에는 대륙과 반도와 열도에 걸친 한국이라는 지리적, 문화적, 정치적, 사회적 토양 속에서 이루어진 특유의 성장과정과 독특한 성취결과가 어우러져 있다. 종래의 선학들은 한국불교의 특성 혹은 성격을 ‘호국불교론’과 ‘통불교론’으로 제시하였다. 이들 중 무종파성과 통합불교를 지향하는 통불교론은 호국불교론과 달리 한국불교의 전통이자 고유성이 되어 왔다. 이 전통은 동아시아 불교사상사를 和諍 會通의 논리로 종합과 통합을 시도한 원효를 기점으로 본격화되어 왔다.
원효는 화쟁을 통해 ‘다양한 주장’에 대한 해명(이해)의 과정을 거쳐 다시 ‘경문의 會釋’에 대한 조화(융화)의 과정으로 나아갔다. 먼저 앞의 두 가지 ‘解(異諍)의 과정’을 거쳐 뒤의 세 가지 ‘和(會文)의 과정’으로 전개하였다. 이어 불교의 ‘다양한 주장을 해명’하고 다시 ‘경문의 會釋을 조화’시켜 나갔다. 원효는 회통을 통해 글이 서로 다른 것에 통하는 ‘通(文異)의 과정’과 뜻이 서로 같은 것에 맞추는 ‘會(義同)의 과정’으로 나아갔다. 그는 染/淨 2因과 當/現 2果의 ‘4종 부문’이 다른 것이 아니라면 무엇 때문에 새삼 ‘一心’이라고 하는가. 일심이라 할 것이 따로 없다면 능히 여러 부문에 해당하는 것이다. 다른 것이 아니기 때문에 여러 부문이 모두 一味平等한 것이라며 회통한다. 이것이 ‘通(文異)의 과정’ 위에서 이루어지는 ‘會(義同)의 과정’이다. 여기에서 화쟁 즉 ‘해(이쟁)의 과정’과 ‘화(회문)의 과정’을 통해 회통 즉 ‘통(문이)의 과정’과 ‘회(의동)의 과정이 완성되는 것이다.
원효의 和會 즉 화쟁 회통 논법은 인도 龍樹의 廻諍, 중국 吉藏/慧思의 無諍과 변별되는 독특한 사유체계라고 할 수 있다. 그는 화쟁 회통의 논리를 통해 해당 주제나 쟁점의 부분성, 해당 교학과 종학의 국부성을 뛰어넘고자 하였다. 그리하여 불교 전체의 맥락에서 통합 지향과 무종파 지향의 성격을 보여주었다. 그것은 교학의 제약을 넘어서고 종파의 구애를 뛰어넘는 초종파성과 禪敎를 종합하고 諸宗을 통합하여 이해하려는 통합불교 지향으로 나타났다. 이처럼 한국불교의 초종파성과 통합불교 지향은 芬皇 元曉의 화쟁 회통의 논리를 통해 보다 구체화되어 왔다. 그리고 그것은 한국불교의 전통과 고유성으로 자리매김 되었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to research the tradition of Korean Buddhism and uniqueness of Buddhology of Bunhwang Wonhyo(617-686) who was the representative philosopher. The unique growing process and result that were achieved in the geographical, cultural, political and social soil called Korea among continent, peninsula and island were harmonized. Existing studies proposed the characteristic or nature of Korean Buddhism through ‘the theory of Buddhism for national protection’ and ‘the theory of interpenetrated Buddhism’. However, unlike the theory of Buddhism for national protection, the theory of the theory of interpenetrated Buddhism that has aimed for no denomination and interpenetrated Buddhism has become the tradition and uniqueness of Korean Buddhism. This tradition really begun from Bunwhang Wonhyo who tried the synthesis and unification of the history of East Asian Buddhist philosophy with Hwajaeng- hoetong logic.
Through the process of understanding about ‘various assertions’ through Hwajaeng, Wonhyo proceeded with harmony (fusion) about ‘collect of The sutra sentences’. First of all, he unfolded three 和(會文) processes after passing through two ‘understanding(異諍) processes’. In this way, he clarified ‘various assertions’ of Buddhism before harmonizing ‘collect of The sutra sentences經文(會釋)’. Wonhyo proceed with the ‘process of combining different sentences通(文異)’ that applies to different thing and the ‘process of gathering similar meanings會(義同)’ that is adjusted to same thing through Hoetong. If ‘4 kinds of Impurity and Purity(染/淨) Two causes(二因) and Suitable Present(當/現) Two effects(二果) are not different, why one mind is called. If it is not necessary to call one mind, it may apply to various things. Because it is not different, all things are everywhere the same of One flavour(一味平等) and they are Hoetong. It is the ‘process of gathering similar meanings會(義同)’ that is performed on the ‘process ofcombining different sentences通(文異)’. Here, Hoetong (the ‘process of combining different sentences通(文異)’ and the ‘process of gathering similar meanings會(義同)’ are completed through Hwajaeng (‘the process of understanding解(異諍)’ and the ‘process of harmonizing和(會文)’).
Wonhyo's Hwahoe (Hwajaenghoetong logic) is a unique thinking system that is discriminated from revolving dispute(廻諍), of Indian Nagarjuna(龍樹) and non-dispute(無諍) of Chinese Giljang(吉藏)/Huisi(慧思). He tried to overcome the local characteristic of doctrine and school about a certain theme and issue through Hwajaenghoetong logic. In this way, he showed the orientation of unification and the characteristic of no denomination. It is shown as the surpass Sects nature that goes beyond the restriction of doctrinal teaching and exceeds the yoke of denomination and the orientation of interpenetrated Buddhism that synthesizes Seon and Doctrine and unifies All Sects(諸宗) for understanding them. Therefore, the surpass Sects nature and the orientation of interpenetrated Buddhism were materialized through Hwajaenghoetong logic of Bunhwang Wonhyo. After all, it was confirmed as the tradition and uniqueness of Korean Buddhism.
