중첩 표현을 통한 채색화의 현대적 재해석 연구 (A Study on the Modern Reinterpretation of Colorization through Overlapping Expression)

초록

채색화는 바탕위에 채색이 쌓이면서 형상을 드러내는 장르로, 일필휘지(一筆揮之)로 정신성을 표현하는 수묵화와는 다른 창작 표현방식을 갖는다. 본 연구는 이렇게 색을 반복적으로 쌓아 형상을 창작하는 본인의 작업에서 중첩(重疊) 표현을 중심으로 이루어진 채색화 작품에 대하여 살펴보고자 한 것이다.
완결된 채색화 작품은 재료적 특성과 바탕작업에서 안료뿐만 아니라 바탕재료인 종이와 비단의 제작과정, 그리고 바탕작업을 위해 배접(褙接), 배채(背彩), 반수(礬水)하는 과정을 거친다. 그리고 바탕위에 채색을 쌓아올려 다양한 채색표현으로 화면위에서 드러나는 형상과 색채는 작가의 정서를 담아 표현된다. 이렇게 완성되는 작품은 수많은 단계들의 집적에 의해 이루어진다.
이러한 중첩 표현을 바탕으로 연구자의 작품세계에 적용하여 두 가지로 분석하였다. 첫째, ‘재료적 물성에 의한 바탕화면의 중첩 표현’으로 ‘요철의 표현’과 ‘배채를 이용한 색상의 형상화’로 나누어 분석하였다. 연구자 작업은 숨기듯 드러나는 바탕작업에 많은 시간과 공을 들인다. 여기서 배접과 배채를 통해 바탕을 최적화하는 일은 표면상태의 가장 알맞은 지향점을 찾는 순간이다. 각 단계에서 채색이 쌓여야 다음 채색을 받아들일 수 있는 바탕으로서 최적의 상태를 준비할 수 있는 것이다. 둘째, ‘외적 형상화를 통한 내면의 표현’이다. 여기서 연구자는 ‘일상적 자연과 기억 형상’과 ‘자연 순환 과정과 소리를 담은 시그널’이라는 두 주제로 나누어 고찰하였다. 연구자는 주변에서 볼 수 있는 실재사물과 그 기억을 통해 드러나는 단편적인 정감이 준비된 바탕표현 위에 최종 형상으로 집적해 나가면서, 눈에 보이지는 않지만 순환하는 자연원리와 이를 소리로서 상징화하여 이미지화하였다. 이렇게 행위의 반복에 의한 채색의 집적은 최종 이미지로서의 형상화를 위한 최적의 상태를 지향한다.
본 연구를 통해 살펴본 채색화는 재료 자체로부터 작품 제작을 위해 바탕을 준비하는 작업에 이르기까지 수많은 과정 속에 반복되는 행위와 정성이 지향되며 축적된다. 그 축적된 바탕에 채색을 겹쳐 올리는 과정을 통해 작가의 의도를 담은 형상이 축적되면서 조화로움을 이룬다. 동양에서 작품을 제작한다는 것은 작품의 최종적 가치보다는 그 과정에서 수행하는 정신적 수양을 중시하는데, 채색화는 사실상 이 수양의 과정을 끝없이 축적하며 조화를 이루는 결정체로 최종화하는 작업인 것이다.
이렇게 중첩의 표현을 기반으로 현대적 채색 기법의 정신적 가치를 새롭게 발견하고 모색해나가는 과정 속에서 이러한 노력의 결실이 창의적인 단서로 작용하여 채색화의 새로운 해석으로 거듭나기를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

Color painting is a genre in which colors build up on the background to reveal its shapes, and it is a creative expression that is different from an ink-and-wash painting that writes with one stroke of a brush. This study will be focused on applying the concept of overlap expression which is considered very important in the color painting work in creating the best shape by repeating colors.
The finished painting and coloring materials go through the production process of paper and silk, which is background material, as well as pigmentation, and processing with intensive steps of side grafting, background color, and oil gilding and every step is completed in the stage. Also, cumulating the color paint and appearing on the surface in various color represented the emotions of the author. Therefore, All those color paint works are done by the aggregation of numerous stages.
Overlay expression is based on the world of the researcher’s work was analyzed in two ways as a color expression method applied to the concept. Firstly, it is overlap expression due to the material properties of the background and representation by the side grafting and background color due to rugging. The researcher spent a lot of time and effort on hidden background work. Optimizing the basis here through placement and arrangement is the moment of finding orientation in the surface conditions. At each stage, it's required to prepare for optimal conditions as a basis for accepting the following colors. Secondly, it is an expression caused by the shape of the internal to form an external process. The formation of the researcher’s work was discussed under two themes: the ordinary nature and memory features, and the natural circulation process and the signal that contained sound. The researcher imaged the unseen but rotating natural principles and their sound as the final shapes of the actual objects found in everyday life and the fragmentary sentiments revealed through their memories were accumulated onto the prepared background. This accumulation of colors by a repetition of the action seeks the optimal condition for formulation as a final image.
The color rendering technique seen in this study can be defined as the total visual accumulation of the concept. From the painting material itself to the work of preparing the basis for the production of the work, the harmony is pursued and accumulated with numerous processes. Based on the accumulated work, the artist's intention is to build up through the process of overlap and drop colors, which results in harmony. The production of works in the East places importance on mental discipline in the process rather than on the final value of the work, which is, in fact, the work of the color paint to accumulate the process endlessly and to finalize it as a result of the harmony.
Therefore, the researcher looks forward to discovering the spiritual value of traditional color painting techniques through this concept of harmony and intend to apply the result of these efforts into new interpretations of color painting with creative conditions.
