正祖代 思悼世子 追崇 典禮 논쟁의 재검토 (Arguments on Canonizing ritual of Jongmyo shrine for prince Sado in King Jeongjo’s Reign)

초록

King Jeongjo(正祖) ascended the throne after elder brother of his father, instead of star-crossed crown prince Sado(思悼世子). In same situation, many kings of Joseon carried out canonizing rites of Jongmyo shrine for their posthumous parents. But King Jeongjo didn’t do that, despite of some obsequious bureaucrats incited for their own hand. He only enforced ritual institution of special shrine and graveyard[宮園制] for his father and treated him with exceptional respect, comparing to common crown prince. In their times, canonizing rites for king’s posthumous parents suggested that the king was predicated on self-seeking, not on public responsibility. Therefore king Jeongjo didn’t want putting on constraint to himself through extraordinary ritual for his father. But Adopted son’s gratitude to biological parents within limit of righteousness[義理] was still important. With abiding by principle of righteousness[義理], king Jeongjo could earn sympathy of his calculative bureaucrats and people to make ethical order of Joseon society.
