현대 장시(長詩)의 본질과 범주에 대한 재고찰 (Reexamination on the nature and category of modern long poem)

초록

본고는 장시에 대한 기존 논의에서 다양하게 제시된 본질 규정에 대한 검토를 바탕으로, 보편적으로 적용 가능한 장시의 갈래상의 본질을 제시하고 그 구체적인 외연으로서 하위 범주를 재설정하고자 하였다.
결론적으로, 장시를 개념 중심으로, 완결되고 통일된 합일체로, 서사 중심으로 이해하고 있는 허버트 리드의 한계를 극복하여 장시의 규정을 새롭게 제시하면, 장시는 ‘지배적인 정서를 인위적으로 확장함으로써 시의 호흡을 길게 끌어가는 시의 한 형태로서, 기존의 서정시와 서사시의 폐쇄성을 극복하여 집중성 및 서사성의 개방성을 다양하게 추구하는 비교적 길이가 긴 시’가 된다.
이런 규정에 따라 현대 장시의 하위 범주에는 서술적 장시와 서정적 장시 및 전위적 장시가 놓이게 된다. 서술적 장시는 집중성 및 서사성이 가장 강하게 존재하는 유형이고, 서정적 장시는 서사성은 없고 집중성이 지배적으로 존재하는 유형이다. 마지막으로 전위적 장시는 집중성과 서술성이 거의 존재하지 않는 유형이다. 또한 개방성 정도에 따를 때, 이런 세 범주는 다시 몇 가지 하위 범주로 나누어질 수 있다. 서술적 장시는 서사성의 강도에 따라, 서사성이 강한 ‘서사형 서술적 장시’와 서사성이 비교적 약한 ‘서정형 서술적 장시’로 나누어질 수 있다. 서정적 장시는 집중성의 강도에 따라, 집중성이 강한 ‘응집형 서정적 장시’와 집중성이 약한 ‘분산형 서정적 장시’로 나누어질 수 있다. 또한 전위적 장시는 집중성의 강도에 따라, 집중성의 강도가 강한 ‘진전형 전위적 장시’와 집중성의 강도가 약한 ‘연작형 전위적 장시’ 등으로 나누어질 수 있다.
이런 장시의 본질 규정과 하위 범주 설정은 구체적인 작품을 통하여 재검토될 필요가 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The nature and category of a long poem has been discussed to some extent, but has not yet to be reached to universal consensus. On the basis of examination on the previous discussions referred to definition of the nature of a long poem, this paper aims to suggest the essential nature of genre of a long poem which might be universally applied and reconstruct the subcategory as specific denotations.
The new definition of a long poem, overcoming the limits of Herbert E. Read who understands a long poem as a complete and unified unity focusing on conception and the narrativity of epic poems, is “a poem has a comparatively long length and a form of poem expanding artificially the dominant emotion, which pursues variously the openness of concentration(Zusammengezogenheit) and narrativity.
According to this definition, ‘narrative long poem’, ‘lyric long poem’ and ‘modernist long poem’ is included in the subcategory of modern long poem.
The narrative long poem is the type that both concentration and narrativity is most outstanding, the lyric long poem is type that concentration is dominant without narrativity and lastly modernist long poem is the type that concentration and narrativity is hardly found.
In addition, according to the degree of strength in concentration and narrativity, these three category has another subcategory. In terms of the strength of narrativity, the narrative long poem divided again as a ‘narrative long poem in epic type’ and a ‘narrative long poem in lyric type’(the former has high degree and the latter low degree, the order means the same in the following two cases); in terms of the intensity of concentration the lyric long poem as ‘a lyric long poem in condensed type’ and ‘a lyric long poem in dispersive type’ and in terms of the intensity of concentration the modernist long poem as ‘a modernist long poem in procedural type’ and ‘a modernist long poem in serial type’.
These definition of the nature of a long poem and the establishment of subcategory of a long poem should be proven again through the specific analysis of long poems. The task of specific classification of Korean modern long poem might result in the approval or the reconsideration and modification of the definition of nature and the establishment of subcategory in this paper.
