신화나 민담 그리고 이를 바탕으로 한 고전의 이면을 살피고 그 행간을읽어내어 재해석하는 일은 현대의 주요한 창작 방식으로 다양한 예술 장르에서 수행되고 있다. 본 논문은 인도의 대표적 고전 신화 문학 <라마야나(Rāmāyaṇa)>를 애니메이션영화로 재해석한 <블루스 부르는 시타(Sita Sings the Blues)>의 서사 구조와 미학적 형식을 분석하여 기존의 이야기가 어떻게변용되고 어떤 의미를 재창출하는지 살펴본다. <라마야나>는 기원전 4-5세기경 성자 발미키(Vālmīki)가 쓴 대서사시로, 신의 화신이자 영웅 라마(Rama)의모험담을 담은 인도의 대표적 고전 신화 문학이다. 이는 오랫동안 인도인의정신과 문화 전반에 큰 영향을 미쳐왔는데, 최근 여성들의 의식이 고양되며<라마야나>의 남성중심적 전개를 비판적으로 다시 읽어내는 움직임이 전개되고 있다. 이런 흐름과 함께 그간 상대적으로 소홀하였던 라마의 아내 시타(Sita)에 대한 연구가 다채롭게 이루어지고 있는데, 본고에서는 기존의 틀에서벗어나 시타를 중심으로 새로운 관점과 혁신적 형식을 통해 <라마야나>를 재창조한 니나 페일리(Nina Paley)의 2008년도 작품 <블루스 부르는 시타>를고찰한다. <블루스 부르는 시타>는 감독 본인의 자전적 이야기와 시타의 이야기를 다채로운 기법과 파격적인 형식으로 엮어낸 애니메이션영화로, 고전적재현 체계에서 벗어나 신선한 사유의 장을 열어준다.
논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 먼저 2장에서는 본 논문의 주요 텍스트의배경이 되는 <라마야나>의 배경과 의미 및 서사를 살펴보고 여기에서 그려지는 억압적 여성상(女性像)에 대하여 밝힌다. 3장에서는 <블루스 부르는 시타> 의 서사 구조를 정리하고, 어떻게 기존의 이야기를 변형시켜 그 이면을 드러내고 이데올로기적 모순을 파열시키고 있는지를 분석한다. 4장에서는 <블루스부르는 시타>의 미학적 방법론과 구조적 형식을 고찰하고, 이를 통해 어떤 의미를 재창출하고 사유의 확장을 도모하는지를 살펴본다. 여기에서는 특히 고전적 재현 체계를 해체하고 매체의 환영적 속성을 드러내는 파편성과 자기지시적 경향에 주목함으로써 내용 뿐 아니라 형식적 측면에서의 전복적 시도를

In many different genres of art, artists explore mythology and folklore as well as the classics that inspired them, in order to understand their hidden meanings and create fresh new interpretations. This paper analyzes the narrative structure and aesthetic forms of the animated film Sita Sings the Blues, a retelling of the classic of Indian mythological tale, Ramayana, and investigates the ways in which the story was transformed to create new meanings. Ramayana, an epic poem written by the Hindu saint Valmiki in 400-500 BC, is a classic of Indian mythological literature which tells of the adventures of Rama, a hero and an avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu. It has had a profound impact on the minds and culture of Indian people, but the heightening of women's consciousness in recent times has led to a movement to critically reevaluate the male-oriented storyline of Ramayana.
While there have been various studies on Rama’s wife, Sita, who was relegated to a minor role in the story, this paper examines Nina Paley’s 2008 film Sita Sings the Blues, in which Sita is granted a central role, offering an original perspective and an innovative style that breathes new life into Ramayana. This animated film weaves together the director’s own experiences and the story of Sita with a powerful style and colorful techniques, breaking away from the conventional mold of retelling the classics to produce a fresh reinterpretation.
The structure of the paper is as follows. Chapter 2 explores the background and story of Ramayana, which provides the backdrop for the film, and highlights the oppressed feminine figure found therein. Chapter 3 explains the narrative structure of Sita Sings the Blues and analyzes how the film changes the story to reveal hidden meanings and tackle ideologically contradictions. Chapter 4 considers the film’s aesthetic methodology and structural form, thereby exploring the new meanings that are created and the expansive ideas that are sought after. Here in particular, the conventions of classic stories retold are cast aside to highlight the capacity of animation as a medium, focusing on fragmentation and self-referential tendencies to investigate not only the story but also the film’s stylistic subversions. The final chapter organizes the discussion made thus far and the conclusions of the paper.
