한국불교의 수계(受戒) 전통 재고찰 (A Review on the Tradition of Ordination Ceremony in Korean Buddhism)

초록

이 연구는 ‘한국불교의 출가자 수계(受戒) 전통’에 대해 다루고 있다. 세존의 ‘무사득구족(無師得具足)’으로 시작된 수계제도는 삼보(三寶) 가운데 승보(僧寶)를 탄생시키는 중요한 의식이다. 인도를 기준으로 변지(邊地)에 해당하는 한국은 상당한 시간이 경과 된 후에 수계의식이 정비되었으며, 성문율인 『사분율(四分律)』의 갈마를 통해 구족계를 수지하고 『범망경(梵網經)』의 대승계를 겸수하는 수계 전통을 형성하였다. 그러나 오늘날 계율교육의 부족으로 출가자 자신이 소속된 한국불교의 수계 전통과 수구(受具)한 계율에 대한 이해가 매우 부족한 것이 사실이다. 이 같은 상황이 지속된다면 청정하고 화합된 승가를 형성하고 불법의 혜명(慧命)을 잇는 출가자 본연의 사명을 다할 수 없게 될 것이다.
본 논문은 이러한 문제의식을 기반으로 한국의 최초 출가자와 이후 수계제도가 정비되는 과정을 고찰하여 한국의 수계 전통을 이해하는 기본적인 관점을 파악하였다. 그런 뒤에 한국불교 수계 전통과 관련하여 일반적으로 언급되는 ‘한국불교 계율은 남산율종을 계승하고 있다’라는 인식에 의문을 제기하고, ‘성문율과 대승계를 동시에 수지하는 것은 불가능하다’라는 주장이 간과하고 있는 점에 대해 검토하였다. 그리고 ‘현재 법과 율의 가르침에 부합하는 수계제도를 통해 승보가 탄생하고 있는가?’ 하는 것이 오늘날 현실적인 율맥의 정통성을 판가름하는 기준이 되어야 한다는 의견을 제시하였다. 이와 같은 수계 전통에 대한 재고찰은 한국 출가자로서 정체성을 확립하고 율장 연구의 방향과 범위를 설정하기 위한 틀이 될 것이다.

영어초록

In Buddhism, to leave home and become monkhood(Chulga, 出家) and the ordination ceremony(受戒) system, which began with the Musadeukgujok(無師得具足) of Buddha, is an essential ritual for the birth of the Saṅgha-Jewel. Looking at this procedure based on India, Korea, which belongs to a remote place(邊地), needs some more time to arrange the ordination ceremony after the influx of Buddhism. Nevertheless, over the past 1700 years, the history of the Saṅgha in Korea has been unbroken under the tradition of becoming bhikkhus and bhikkhunis after receiving upasampadā(具足戒) based upon prātimokṣa and kammavācā of Dharmaguptaka Vinaya(四分律) and additionally accepting bodhisattva śīla of Bharma net Sutra(梵網經).
However, the lack of education of Vinayapitaka today has created a climate that recognizes the ordination ceremony as a ritual of passage for leaving home and becoming monkhood. Therefore, monks have failed to establish their identities based on the rules and regulations they have received. If this situation has not changed, the monks and nuns of Sanghā’s original mission of forming a clean and harmonious Sanghā and transmitting the life of Buddha- Dharma will not succeed.
Based on the awareness of this problem, this study attempted to explore the perspectives of understanding the tradition of ordination ceremony in Korea by examining the process of reorganizing monkhood and monastic precepts system for the first time. We need to understand the situation of Korea, historically and synchronically far from the time of Buddha, in which the ordination ceremony was not able to be formed by the complete monastic precepts system at the beginning, and then attempt to figure out where we put the standard of the legacy of Yulmaek(律脈) today. Then among the traditions of Chulga and ordination ceremony in Korean Buddhism first, this study raised questions about the perception that Korean Buddhist precepts are succeeding Nan‐shan Vinaya School(南山律宗), which is commonly referred to when illuminating the origin of the monastic precepts of Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. Secondly, this study reviewed the fact that overlooked the claim that it is impossible to receive both upasampadā and bodhisattva śīla at the same time. Understanding these issues will be the basic framework for establishing the identity of becoming Buddhist monks and nuns in Korea and setting the direction and scope of Vinayapitaka research.
