조선시대 문무과 재급제 현황과 재급제자 조사(1) - 문무과방목의 전산화 자료를 중심으로 - (Twice-Successful Present Condition and an Investigation into Twice-Successful Candidate of the Civil Service Examination & the Military Service Examination during the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

세계 역사에 있어서 전근대 국가가 시험을 통하여 관리를 선발한 예는 중국과 한국·월남뿐이었다. 조선 사회에서 기득권층인 양반이라도 능력이 없으면 출세하기 어려웠다. 이 능력을 측정하는 방법이면서, 지배계층의 엘리트를 선발하는 수단이 科擧였다. 과거에 한 번 급제하기도 어려운데, 두 번 급제한 재급제자들을 문과와 무과에서 조사하였다. 정치적인 이유나 시험 자체의 문제로 과거 시험 전체가 취소되는 罷榜이나 과거 부정 또는 개인적 이유로 削科나 拔去가 되어 과거 급제가 취소되었다. 그래도 停擧만 되지 않는다면 언제라도 과거에 도전하였다. 그 결과 문과에서는 조선 전 시기에 53명의 재급제자를 확인하였다. 무과에서는 1회 시험의 파방에서 50명의 재급제자가 출현하였다. 재급제자들이 과거를 2번 급제하게 된 원인들을 조사하였다. 급제 취소의 원인은 다양하였지만, 立身揚名의 가장 빠른 길은 과거 급제였다. 왜 과거를 2번 급제했는가에 대한 대답은 여러 가지가 있을 수 있겠다. 가장 중요한 이유는 과거가 가지는 의미 내지는 목적이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 과거 급제는 官界 진출의 척도였으며, 陞進 할 수 있는 가장 쉬운 방법이었다. 양반 사회에서 과거 급제는 신분을 유지하고 생계를 꾸려가기 위한 제일의 목적이었다. 그래서 모든 유학자들이 그것을 위해 평생을 노력하였다. 관리가 되기 위해서는 유학적 소양을 갖추어야만 하였고, 儒學 經典을 시험 과목으로 하였기 때문에 평생을 유학 경전과 詩文에 시간과 노력을 투자하여야만 과거에 급제할 수 있었다. 과거는 다른 곳에 관심을 둘 여유를 주지 않으면서 많은 양반 사대부들을 국가 체제 안에 귀속 시킬 수 있는 일종의 ‘사회 안전핀(social safety pin)’ 역할을 수행 하였다.

영어초록

China, Korea, and Vietnam are the only pre-modern countries in the history of the world in which government officials were selected through examination. If not capable, even yangban (noblemen) of the privileged class faced difficulty succeeding in Joseon society. Gwageo (government service examination), was the means through which the capability of a person was measured and the elite of the ruling class selected. The fastest way to success and fame was through successfully passing the gwageo.
It is difficult to pass the gwageo even once, but there were some who passed the gwageo twice. These twice-successful candidates of mungwa (civil service examination) and mugwa (military service examination) are investigated in this paper. Sometimes, gwageo was cancelled in its entirety due to political reasons or due to a problem with the examination itself; successful passing of gwageo was rescinded due to dishonesty during the examination or due to personal reasons; or successful passing of the gwageo was revoked by being excluded from the list of successful gwageo passers. Men, however, could take the gwageo at any time as long as they were not barred from taking it for a certain period of time. As a result, I have been able to confirm that there were 53 and 50 twice-successful passers throughout Joseon dynasty of the mungwa and the mugwa, respectively, the latter group caused by the cancellation of gwageo. Causes of the emergence of twice-successful passers of gwageo are examined in this paper. Successful passing of gwageo was cancelled for various reasons. Furthermore, there may be a number of reasons as to why some gwageo candidates successfully passed the examination twice, but the most important reason can be said to be the significance of, or the goal in, taking the gwageo a second time around. Successfully passing the gwageo is a criterion for advancing into officialdom and the easiest way to attain higher social status. As well as the most important goal toward maintaining one's status and earning a living in yangban society. This is why every Confucian spent his entire life toward passing the gwageo. In order to become a scholar-official, one must be cultured in the Confucian way, and because gwageo questions were based on Confucian classics, one had to invest time and effort throughout his lifetime toward learning Confucianism poetry and literary writing. Gwageo did not provide its candidates the leisure of becoming interested in anything else, and many Joseon yangban scholar-officials played the role of a kind of "social safety pin" who belonged within the state system.
