<유연전>에 나타난 쟁재(爭財)의 양상과 그 의미 (The Aspects and Meaning of Property Dispute in Yooyeonjeon)

초록

이 논문은 고전소설 <유연전>에 나타난 쟁재(爭財)의 양상과 의미를 살피고 있다. 조선 전기에서 중ㆍ후기로의 전환기에 나타난 사회ㆍ경제적 동인을 통하여 쟁재가 벌어질 수 있었던 배경을 확인하고, <유연전>을 통하여 쟁재의 문학적 형상화 양상을 살펴본 후, 조선 중기 이후 문학에서 경제 문제들이 비중 있게 자리한 의미를 알아보았다. 이러한 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 쟁재의 사회 경제적 동인은 상속제도의 변화와 자본 중심 사회로의 전환의 차원으로 살펴보았다. 우선 조선은 유교를 근간으로 내세운 국가로, 부모를 섬기고 조상에 제사를 봉하는 것을 중시하였다. 그렇지만 이러한 적장자 중심의 상속제도는 조선 중기 이후에 자리한 것으로 상속제도의 변화에는 주자학의 정통성을 강조한 사림파의 영향력이 깃들어 있다. 이들은 향촌을 중심으로 정치, 사회적 기반을 다지고, 적장자 중심으로 가족제도를 마련하여 장자 상속의 정통성을 만들었다. 그리고 농업의 발달, 시장의 등장, 상공업의 발달로 이어진 피지배계층의 경제적 성장은 경제적 근대화의 맹아가 되었다. 부(富)라는 새로운 힘의 기존의 지배계층을 위협하기도 했다. 유교 사상을 바탕으로 인본주의를 주창한 조선 전기에서 자본 주심의 조선 중기 사회로의 변화가 일어난 것이다.
둘째, <유연전>에서 쟁재의 문학적 형상화 양상은 충격적인 실사(實事)의 문학화, 세속적 인물의 보편화, 실익 추구의 극단화를 통하여 드러난다. 먼저 현실적으로 민감한 유산상속의 문제로 기인하며 실록에 여러 번 등장할 만큼 화제가 되었던 당대의 실제 송사가 작품화되며 다분히 많은 관심을 받았으리라 짐작된다. 다음으로 <유연전>은 중심인물인 유연만을 좇으며 단편적으로 구성한 것이 아니다. 등장인물들은 저마다 경제적 실익을 추구하고자 자신의 것을 공고히 지키려고 하거나, 부당한 방법을 동원하여 가산의 쟁탈에 앞장서는 등 자본적 측면에서 세속화된 모습을 보여준다. 더 나아가 <유연전>은 실익을 추구하는 방향으로의 사회적 변화상을 담고 있다. 조선 전기의 관념적인 제도론을 여전히 수호하면서도 조선 중기 이후 불어온 실리를 중시하는 진보적인 면모가 담겨 있는 것이다. 다만 <유연전>에서는 재화에의 과몰입으로 인하여 강상의 도리마저 저버리는 자본주의적 인간의 모습을 통하여 실익 추구의 극단화 경향이 함께 드러난다.
셋째, 조선 전기에는 신분제도와 강상의 법도 등이 중시된 인본 중심의 사회적 기조를 내세웠으나 조선 중기 이후 근대로의 전환기를 맞으며 여러 경제적 문제들이 문학작품의 내외에서 드러난다. 먼저 인본주의에서 자본주의로 이행하고 있는 사회상이 자연스럽게 문학작품에 담겨 있다. 사실 <유연전>은 한문으로 지어진 점, 입전의 목적과 주제가 강상의 강조라는 점에서 대중적인 문화상품으로 자리하기에는 한계가 있다. 그러나 자본의 중요성이 이미 보편화된 사회상을 담고 있고, 이를 위하여 벌어지는 쟁재라는 현실적 담론은 널리 회자 되기에 충분하다. 다음으로 경제적 실익을 추구하는 시장 경제로의 전환은 고전소설의 제작과 유통환경과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 이러한 배경에서 문학작품은 그 자체로 상품화되어 경제적 이윤 추구를 가능하게 하였고, 대표적으로 고전소설은 대표적인 대중 문학으로서 다양하게 향유되었다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the aspect and meaning of the dispute in the classic novel Yooyeonjeon. The background of the property dispute was confirmed through the socio-economic causes that appeared during the change from the early Joseon to the Middle and Late Joseon period. After examining the aspect of literary formation of the plough through the Yooyeonjeon, through this, After the mid-Joseon period, the meaning of economic problems in literature was examined. The following is the summary of these contents.
First, the socioeconomic causes of the property dispute were examined by dividing them into the change of inheritance system and the transition to capital-centered society. Joseon is a country based on Confucianism, and it emphasized serving parents and sacrifice of ancestors. However, the inheritance system centered on the eldest son was established after the mid-Joseon period, and the influence of Sarim, which emphasizes the legitimacy of Jujahak, is based on the change of the inheritance system. The economic growth of the ruling class, which led to the development of agriculture, the emergence of the market, and the development of commerce and industry, is the seed of economic modernization, which has new power with the accumulation of wealth and threatens the existing ruling class.
Second, the aspect of the literary formation of the property dispute in Yooyeonjeon is revealed through the literaryization of shocking actual events, the universalization of secular characters, and the extreme pursuit of practical interests. The lawsuit, which has arisen as a matter of realistically sensitive inheritance, becomes a novel and receives more attention. Yooyeonjeon is not a fragmentary composition centered on the central character, Yoo Yeon. The characters were secularized in terms of capitalism, such as pursuing economic interests and acquiring property by using unfair methods. And Yooyeonjeon contains the social change image. It is still a progressive figure that values ​​economic interests after the mid-Joseon period, while still defending the ideological morality of the Joseon Dynasty. However, in Yooyeonjeon, the capitalist human image that is overly immersed in wealth and abandons the righteousness is revealed extremely.
Third, the social trend of human beings, which emphasizes the status system and ethical law of the Joseon Dynasty, has been converted into modernity since the mid-Joseon period, and various economic problems affect the inside and outside of literary works. Of course, it is very natural for the social image that is transitioning from humanism to capitalism to be included in literary works. Yooyeonjeon was written in Chinese characters, and since the purpose and theme of the work emphasize morality, it is limited to become a popular cultural product. However, the real discourse of capital and the property dispute that takes place for this is enough to be widely discussed. The transition to the market economy that pursues economical practicality is closely related to the environment in which the production and distribution of classical novels are made. In this background, classical novels are transformed into popular literature and are variously reveled, and literary works are commercialized in themselves, enabling economic profit pursuit.
