<이해룡전>의 탕재(蕩財) 양상과 그 의미 (The spending of a family fortune and the meaning of it from Lee Hae-ryong Jeon)

초록

본고는 <이해룡전>의 표면적 주제인 효 사상 이면에 감추어진 당대의 현실 문제를 ‘탕재(蕩財)’에 주목하여 살펴보았다. 효행을 위해 가산을 탕진하는 이유, 작품에 나타난 탕재의 양상을 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 이를 통하여 작품 서사가 갖는 한계점과 문학사적 의미를 조명해보았다.
첫째, 탕재의 동인을 제도와 경제 면으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 먼저 제도적 동인은 조선이 백성에 대한 교화를 목적으로 유교를 국가의 기틀로 삼으면서 효행을 제도로 강제하여 자발성보다는 의무적으로 실천하도록 했다. 국가의 강령 때문에 살아생전의 섬김은 물론이고 사후의 상제에서도 책임을 면치 못하여 가진 모든 것을 다 투자하여 효를 실천하는 것이 필연적․당위적 현상으로 자리 잡았다. 다음은 경제적 동인이다. 자본이 곧 힘인 경제 원리를 부정하며, 특권의식만을 믿다가 사회적으로 도태된 양반이 많았다. 양반은 현실을 걱정하면서도 부모 봉양과 장례, 제사를 신앙처럼 떠받들어 경제적 한계에 부딪히는 일이 빈번했다. 신분이나 체면 때문에 경제활동을 등한시하여 스스로 위기상황에 봉착한 것이다.
둘째, <이해룡전>의 탕재 양상을 관념적인 효행과 형식적 상제례의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 맹목적이라 할 만큼 효를 강조하고, 실제로도 그것의 실천을 위해 현실적인 삶이 버거울 수도 있었다. 이 작품에서도 효를 위해 가진 것을 모두 탕진하고도 고난이 끊이질 않는다. 그래서 주인공 이해룡의 삶을 통해 관념적인 효행과 형식적 상제례의 폐단을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 삶의 가치관이 현실적이지 못하고 오직 효의 실천이 전체를 지배하고 있다. 이는 모두 중세적인 효를 강조하며 빚어진 결과로, 시대의식과는 상당한 거리가 있다.
셋째, <이해룡전>이 갖는 서사의 한계와 문학사적 의미를 살펴보았다. 조선 중․후기에 근대적 세계관이 유입되어 민중의 삶도 실리를 추구하게 되지만, 이 작품에서는 현실의 경제논리를 부정한 채 오로지 주자학적인 중세의 효행만을 강조하고 있다. 관념적인 효행 뒤에 큰 보응이 있을 것이라는 것을 우연적인 사건으로 보여주고 있다. 하지만 현실은 개인화되면서 경제적인 이익을 강조하는 방향으로 나아가고 있었다. 그래서 작품에서 추구한 내용과 현실이 배치될 수밖에 없다. 문제를 알고 있지만 해결을 위한 처방이 현실적이지 않아 공허한 결말을 맺는다. 이는 이 작품이 갖는, 또는 고전소설이 갖는 서사적 한계이다. 그런데 역설적이게도 이 점이 <이해룡전>의 문학사적 의의를 드러내는 부분이기도 하다. 갈등과 조화를 모색하던 조선 후기의 시대상황을 적절히 포착해 놓았기 때문이다.

영어초록

In this paper, practical issues in Lee Hae-ryong Jeon, which are hidden under the typical theme “Hyo (filial piety),” are studied by focusing on the spending of a family fortune in those days. The subjects, such as why the hero of the novel spends the family fortune to fulfill his filial duties and how he spends it, have been examined in detail to shed light on the limitation of a literary work and its meaning in the history of literature.
Firstly, reasons for the spending are examined from systematical and economic aspects. Having Confucianism as the national principle, Joseon systematically forced the people into filial piety to reform them. Because of the nation’s doctrine, it was taken for granted that people should do everything to fulfill filial duties, and they were not free from the duties even after the deaths of parents. Then, there is an economic aspect. The power of capital in the economy system was negatively considered, and many “Yangban (people of noble birth)” just held on to the social status and degenerated in the end. As they had to keep spending on filial duties, funerals and memorial services, they often had serious money issues. By neglecting their economic situations, they caused the crisis by themselves.
Secondly, the spending in Lee Hae-ryong Jeon has been studied in ideological and ritual aspects. Filial piety was emphasized unreasonably, which made people suffer from fulfilling it. The hero in this novel also spent all he had for the duties and suffered from it, which shows the negative effects of the ideology and formal rituals. The thought of value, dominated by “Hyo,” was not realistic. The crisis was resulted by forcing the medieval idea of “Hyo,” and it was different from what people believed.
Thirdly, the limitation of the narrative of Lee Hae-ryong Jeon and the meaning of it in the history of literature have been examined. As modern ideas were introduced in the middle and end of Joseon dynasty, people started to show practical interest, but this novel denied the new values, and emphasized the medieval filial piety of Chu-tzu. The novel shows that a big reward will be given for the filial piety with an unlikely event. But interest in money and individualism are being widely accepted. So the idea of the novel is in disagreement with the reality. The ending is hollow because the solution is not practical. This is the limitation of narratives of classical literature. Paradoxically, however, the limitation shows the significance of Lee Hae-ryong Jeon in the history of literature as it properly reflects the end of Joseon dynasty that tried to find a balance in conflicts.
