연속동사형식에 사용된 ‘在NPL’ 구조의 생성과 변천 (The Generation and Evolution of the “在NPL” Structure Used in Serial Verb Constructions)

초록

본고에서는 연속동사형식에 사용된 ‘在NPL’의 생성과 변천과정을 고찰하였다. ‘在NPL’ 구조는 한대에 탄생한다. 그러나 한대와 위진남북조 이후의 사용 현황은 차이가 있다. 이 구조는 한대에 주로 VP뒤에 놓이지만 위진남북조 이후에는 주로 VP앞에 놓인다. 위진남북조 이후에는 이 구조가 VP의 앞에 놓여 동작이 발생한 처소와 상태가 존재하는 처소를 나타내고, VP의 뒤에 놓여 동작이 도달한 처소와 상태가 존재하는 처소를 나타내는데 이는 언어의 도상성을 따른 결과이다. 그러나 탄생 초기인 한대에는 이 구조가 VP 뒤에 놓일 경우 동작이 도달한 처소와 상태가 존재하는 처소 이외에도 동작이 발생한 처소까지 나타내는데 이는 도상성에 위배된다. 이 구조가 한대에 VP 뒤에서 ‘在’처소구가 도입하는 모든 의미영역을 수반하는 이유는 ‘於’개사구의 구법위치의 영향을 받은 것이며 이는 언어의 추상성과 연관된 현상이다. 즉 ‘在’구는 연속동사형식으로 사용될 경우 시간순서원리라는 도상성을 유지한다. 하지만 ‘在’가 동사에서 전치사로 변천하는 과도기인 한대에는 ‘於’개사구의 구법위치의 영향을 받아 추상성을 따르게 되고 이 때문에 동작이 발생한 처소, 상태가 존재하는 처소, 동작이 도달한 처소를 모두 수반하는 것이다. 그러나 위진남북조 이후 VP 앞에 놓인 ‘在’구의 ‘在’가 전치사로 변천되면서 처소를 나타내는 ‘在’구도 도상성을 따르게 되고 더 이상 VP 뒤에서 동작이 발생한 처소를 나타내지 않게 되는 것이다.

영어초록

This study examined the generation and evolution of the “在NPL” structure used in serial verb constructions. The “在NPL” structure came into existence during the era of the Han Dynasty. However, its usage in this era differs from that after the era of the Wei, Jin, Northern, and Southern Dynasties. This structure mainly occurred after a VP in the Han Dynasty, whereas it mostly occurred before a VP after the era of the Wei, Jin, Northern, and Southern Dynasties. This structure, after these latter dynasties, indicated the locatives that designate the place of the state and action when occurring before a VP, and the same structure indicated the locatives that designate the place of the state and action when occurring after a VP, in conformance to the iconic principles of language. Nevertheless, when this structure occurred after a VP in the era of the Han Dynasty, which was the initial stage of its generation, it indicated the locative where the action occurred, in addition to the locatives that designated the completed action and state of being, which is in violation of the iconic principles. When situated after a VP, this structure involved all the semantic functions that the “在” locative phrase introduced in the era of the Han Dynasty, owing to the influence of the syntactic position of the “於” preposition phrase, which is a phenomenon related to the abstract principles of language. That is, the “在” phrase maintains the principle of temporal sequence, an iconic principle, when used as a serial verb construction. Nonetheless, “在” came to follow the abstract principle owing to the influence of the syntactic function of the “於” preposition phrase and it accordingly involved all the locatives that designate the place the action occurred, the state of being, and the completed action in the Han Dynasty, when “在” was undergoing a transition from verb to preposition. After the era of the Wei, Jin, Northern, and Southern Dynasties, the “在” phrase that indicated a locative also came to follow the iconic principles, as “在” phrases that occurred before a VP transformed into a preposition phrase and no longer indicated locatives where an action occurred after a VP.
