레위기 17장의 문맥적 이해와 신학적 의의 (Contextual Interpretation of Leviticus 17 and Its Significance in Leviticus Study)

초록

본 소고는 문맥적 고찰을 통해 레위기 17장에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도한다. 근접 문맥과 내적 문맥 모두의 견지에서 레위기 17장의 위치와 내용, 그리고그것의 의의가 재해석된다. 우선 근접 문맥에서 이 장이 레위기 16장과 나란히배치되어 있는 이유가 설명된다. 피의 속죄 기능이 절정에 이르는 레위기 16장의 속죄일 규정에 이어 17장에서 그 피의 생명으로서의 의미와 대속적 기능, 그리고 피의 남용과 섭취의 금지가 경고된다. 피의 주제가 중심인 레위기 17장은 매년 온 백성의 피의 속죄를 명령하는 16장과 더불어 레위기 구조의 중심에놓여 있다. 백성들은 매년 속죄일에 속죄제 짐승의 희생과 피를 통해 거룩을회복하고 또한 이후 정결하고 거룩한 삶을 실천하며 살아야 한다. 레위기의 구조는 16-17장이 구조의 중심에 놓여 있는 가운데, 삶의 다양한 차원들에서 거룩을 구현하기 위한 법들이 교차구조로 대칭되어 있음이 확인된다.
내적 문맥을 살피면 레위기 17장은 피의 문제를 중심으로 몇 가지 법들이 배치되어 있음이 분명해진다. 네 가지 법들이 열거되는데, 그것들은 피의 남용과섭취를 경고하고 피의 의미와 기능을 진술하며, 식용을 위한 사냥감 짐승 처리의 합법적 절차, 스스로 죽은 짐승의 식용 금지를 명령한다. 이 모든 법들은 레위기 17:11의 피의 명제를 축으로 연결되어 있고 교차구조로 양쪽에 나란히 배치되어 있다: 피는 곧 생명이며, 그것은 제단에 귀속되어야 하고, 이로써 그 피가 속죄의 효과를 가져온다. 이러한 문맥적 주해는 이 구절에 대한 밀그롬의해석이 크게 잘못되었음을 알게 해준다.

영어초록

With contextual consideration of Leviticus 17, this study attempts to make new interpretations on the location and contents of Leviticus 17 and to find out their significance. First, from the adjacent context of Leviticus 17, it is explained why it is situated along with Leviticus 16. Following Leviticus 16 where the expiatory function of the animal blood with the sin offering comes to a climax, Leviticus 17 states the meaning of blood as life and the reason why blood has expiatory power, cautioning against the prohibition of blood consumption. Chapter 17 is placed in the center of Leviticus with chapter 16 that stipulates the Day of Atonement when the national atonement for Israel is achieved annually with the blood of the sin offerings and the Azazel goat ritual. On the Day of Atonement, Israel should restore its holiness through the sacrifices of the sin offering animals and their blood-shedding. Centering on Leviticus 16-17, the structure of Leviticus displays the chiastic juxtaposition of the chapters and contents.
From the perspective of the internal context, it is clear that consecutive laws in Leviticus 17 are arranged focusing on blood problem. There are listed four laws which warn against the abuse and consumption of blood, explain the meaning and function of blood, allow the flesh of game on condition of no blood, and prohibit eating of the animals that are found dead or torn by wild animals. All these laws are tied to Leviticus 17:11, taking it as the pivot of the symmetric structure, while V. 11 rationalizes the axiom of blood as life and its expiatory power: blood is life; blood should be put on the altar; thus blood brings effect of expiation for a person's life. Such exposition of Leviticus 17 declines Milgrom's interpretation as a wrong idea.
The interpreters have been baffled by the meaning of preposition B. in v. 11b.
This study understands it as instrumental B. along with many scholars. That is, v. 11b is a statement about the expiatory function of blood ‘by means of blood,’ ‘through blood,’ namely, ‘at the price of life’ or ‘by compensation of blood-life.’ This interpretation matches well the function of blood in expiatory offerings (sin offering and guilt offering), as well as the expiatory effect of sacrificial blood manipulation made on the Day of Atonement.
