갈라디아서 2장 20절의 의미와 손양원 목사 (The Meaning of Galatians 2:20 and Pastor Yangwon Son)

본고에서 저자는 갈라디아서 2장 20절의 의미를 먼저 알아보았다. 그리고 그 의미에서 손양원 목사의 생애를 살펴보았다. 교회에서 가장 많이 언급되는 성서 구절 중의 하나가 갈 2:20이지만 조직신학에서 잘 다루지 않았던 구절이기도 한다. 그래서 하이델베르크 대학의 조직신학자인 프리데리케 뉘쎌(Friderike Nüssel)은 이 구절에 대해서 정리해 놓았다. 갈 2:20은 ‘믿음 안에서의 존재’와 ‘예수 그리스도를 위한 삶’으로 해석할 수 있다. 믿음 안에서의 존재는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 새로운 존재를 말한다. 이 새로운 존재는 율법에서 해방된 자, 그리스도와 마치 한 사람처럼 된 자, 그리고 예수 그리스도를 위한 삶이고 타자를 위한 삶을 의미한다. 예수 그리스도를 위한 삶은 자신이 아닌 예수 그리스도의 영광과 뜻을 따르는 삶이다. 예수 그리스도를 위한 삶은 예수 그리스도를 따르기에 타자를 위한 이타적인 삶을 추구하게 된다. 죄와 율법에서 해방된 새로운 존재라고 해서 삶이 결렬된 믿음 생활만을 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 내면에 조그마한 죄까지도 민감하면서 예수 그리스도를 닮고자 하는 삶을 말한다. 손양원은 바로 이런 삶을 살았고 강한 의지로 그 죄악과 싸웠던 사람이었다. 그리고 오직 예수 그리스도와 자신에게 주어진 양떼들을 위해서 목숨을 다해 목회했던 위인이었다. 갈 2:20의 정확한 의미는 믿음과 외적 생활의 균형, 그리고 죄와 싸우며 복음과 하나님의 나라를 위해 삶을 포괄적으로 포함한다. 일제에 맞서 일사각오의 정신으로 고문을 견디며 자신의 아들들을 죽인 원수를 양자로 삼고 교회와 나환자 교인들을 지키다가 순교까지 하게 된 손양원은 바로 이런 삶을 살았던 인물이다. 작금의 한국교회가 바로 이런 목회자의 모습을 살아내지 못하기에 위기를 맞이하게 되었다. 믿음과 삶이 분리된 신앙생활, 예수 그리스도를 위한 삶이 아닌 본인의 축복과 안위만 추구하는 기독교적 이기주의, 그리고 교회의 외적 성장만을 추구하는 한국교회는 기독교가 마땅히 추구해야 할 중요한 가치들도 축소해 버렸다. 손양원은 내면의 작은 악이라도 예사롭게 보지 않았고, 자기 욕심에 따른 소원성취적인 기도가 아닌 진리의 말씀대로 살아내기 위한 기도를 강조하였다. 그리고 나환자를 향한 목회자의 참된 사랑과 자신의 아들들을 죽인 원수를 용서하고 양아들로 삼으면서 그는 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 실천한 초월한 사랑의 인물이 되었다. 그는 나환자 교인들을 지키기 위해 피난길을 가지 않았고 결국 공산당에 의해서 순교하게 된다. 기독교인들이 손양원처럼 살 수 없지만 갈라디아서 2장 20절을 바르게 고백한다면 바로 이런 삶의 모습을 사모하게 될 것이다. 한국교회의 회복은 바로 이런 신앙생활에서 비로소 시작될 것이다.

In this article, the author examines the meaning of Galatians 2:20. And in that sense, we looked at the life of pastor Yangwon Son. Galatians 2:20 is widely discussed within the church, yet receives minimal attention in systematic theology. So Friderike Nüssel, a systematic theologian at the University of Heidelberg, presents an overview of the passage. According to her interpretation, Galatians 2:20 can be understood to mean "being in faith" and "living in service of Jesus Christ". Being in faith refers to a new creation in Jesus Christ. This new existence means freedom from the law, union with Christ, and living for the sake of Jesus Christ's other. To live in the service of Jesus Christ is to live for the glory and will of Jesus Christ, not your own. The life in the service of Jesus Christ is a life of selflessness for the sake of others because we follow Jesus Christ. Being a new creation, freedom from sin and the legalism, does not mean living a life of disconnected faith. Rather, it is a life that seeks to resemble Jesus Christ while being sensitive to even the smallest sin within. Rather, it is a life that strives to emulate Jesus Christ while remaining aware of even the slightest sin.
Pastor Yangwon Son led such a life, determined to combat sin with unwavering fortitude. He was a great man who devoted his life to Jesus Christ and the congregation he served. The meaning of Galatians 2:20 emphasizes balancing faith and outward life, contending against sin, and living for the gospel and the kingdom of God. Pastor Yangwon Son lived such a life, who faced the Japanese with a ready-to-die spirit, endured torture, adopted his sons' killers, defended the church and leper congregation, and ultimately died a martyr. The recent Korean church is in crisis because it no longer pursues this type of pastor. The separation of faith and life, Christian selfishness that seeks only one's own blessing and security instead of living for Jesus Christ, and the church's pursuit of external growth have diminished the important values that Christianity should pursue. Yangwon Son was aware of the slightest wrongdoing within, and he stressed the importance of prayer to live according to the truth rather than indulging in prayers that serve only one's selfish desires. And through the pastor's genuine affection for the leper, his forgiveness towards his enemies who had killed his sons and his decision to adopt them as foster sons, he emerged as a symbol of extraordinary love, embodying the love of Jesus Christ. And instead of fleeing to protect the leper church members, he was martyred by the Communists. Christians cannot live like Yangwon Son, but if they confess Galatians 2:20 correctly, they will strive for this kind of life. The restoration of the Korean church will only commence with this kind of faith.
