신소설의 대중성과 여성 활동 장(場)의 관계 - 최찬식 소설을 중심으로 (Relationship between Shinsoseol’s Popularity and the Field of Women’s Activity - Focusing on Choi Chansik’s Novels)

초록

최찬식 소설은 한국의 고소설 중, 특히 통속적인 영웅소설의 로맨스 구조를 바 탕으로 하고 있다. 영웅 로맨스 소설 구조는 ‘결혼 약속→남․녀 이산(離散)→시련 뒤의 재결합’ 형태로 진행되면서 인간의 일생 중 결혼을 가장 중시하는 가치관을 보여준다. 이러한 고전소설의 틀 안에서 최찬식이 개척한 새로움은 당대를 앞서가는 아방가르드적인 가치관의 측면에서 살필 수 있다.
최찬식 소설의 대부분은 남녀 주인공이 파란만장한 고투 끝에 결혼에 성공한다거나 아버지의 뜻에 반하는 결혼을 쟁취한다는 등 로맨스가 주류를 이룬다. 이러한 이야기의 전개 속에서 많은 화소(話素)들이 남녀 주인공의 만남을 차단하기 위한 장애 요인으로 배치되는데, 그 공간적 배경에서 독자는 당대의 식민지 대중이 새로운 가치관을 적극적으로 수용하려는 욕망을 읽어낼 수 있다.
이전의 고소설들이, 봉건적인 가치관을 신봉하면서 시간이 흘러감에 따라 성장해 가는 탈공간화 된 인물에 보다 더 주목했다면 상대적으로 최찬식 소설은 등장인물의 역동적인 움직임과 사회적 힘(power)의 변화에 재빠르게 대처하는 공간화 된 인물에 주목하고 있다. 작품 속에서 이처럼 공간화 된 인물은 근대성과 반근대성이 뒤섞인 과도기 시대의 윤리적 혼란 속에서도 과감하게 새로운 조류로 부상하고 있는 근대적 가치관을 실천적으로 수용하고 있는 특징적인 면모를 보인다.
그 바탕에는 기존시대의 가치관에 고착적인 공간 대신, 유동하며 부단히 생성적 인 새로운 조류의 공적 공간이 자리하고 있다. 따라서 등장인물의 사적 행위가 사적 공간에 갇히는 기존 소설과 달리 최찬식 소설에 등장하는 등장인물의 사적 행위는 공적 공간 또는 사회적 공간과 긴밀하게 연동됨으로써 공적 공간이 사적 행위에 지대한 영향을 미치는 양상으로 그려지고 있다. 최찬식 소설이 다분히 고소설적인 면모를 보이면서도 근대적인 새로움을 풍기는 것은 이와 같이 공적 공간 또는 사회적 공간이 발산하는 새로운 가치관과 자본의 흐름에 따라 변모하는 사회의 새로운 이해관계 속에 등장인물들을 배치했기 때문이다.
가출로 시작하여 혈혈단신으로 외국 유학을 단행하거나 가족의 희생에 아랑곳하지 않고 학벌 쌓기에 전념하는 주인공의 행동은, 고소설 중 영웅 로맨스 소설에 등장하는 주인공들의 가출이나 자기 단련과 닮아 있다. 그런데 자세히 들여다보면 최찬식 소설의 주인공은 이러한 영웅 로맨스 소설의 주인공이 가족이나 국가의 안위를 위해 자신의 인생을 내던지는 대의적 차원의 자기희생적인 모습과는 차원이 다르다. 최찬식 소설의 주인공들은 영웅 로맨스 소설의 주인공들과 달리 개인적 야망을 품고 자기중심적으로 사욕을 채우기 위해 ‘마음껏 욕망’하는 근대적 개인으로서의 이기심을 발휘하는 소아(小我)적 태도를 보인다.
봉건적 가치관에 따르면 개별적 주체로서의 삶이나 사적 욕망의 노출이 악덕으로 취급되었을 테지만, 최찬식 소설에서는 자신의 이기심에 충실하게 세속적 복리(福利)를 추구하는 행태를 긍정적인 새 시대의 가치로 내세우고 있다. 결국 최찬식 소설은 자기이해관계에 충실한, 욕망하는 존재로서의 사적 이기심을 미덕으로 만들어내는 근대 자본주의적 관점을 긍정적으로 도입함으로써 대중성을 확보하는 데 성공했다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

Choi Chansik’s novels are based on Korean classical novels, especially on the romantic structure of popular heroic novels. The structure of heroic romance novels develops in the form of, “proposing-parting between the man and woman-reunion after hardships,” and lays emphasis on marriage as the highest value of human life. Within the framework of classical novels, the newness that Choi Chansik introduced can be seen from the avant-garde values that were way ahead of time.
Most of Choi Chansik’s novels are based on romance, for example, the male and female lead characters succeed in getting married after numerous problems or against the father’s will. In the development of the narrative, a number of story elements are arranged as hindrances that stop the meeting of the male and female main characters. In the spatial background, readers can observe the desire of colonized intellects of the time to accept new values aggressively.
Previous classical novels focused on characters that are not spatialized and evolve with the flow of time while adhering to existing values, whereas, Choi Chansik’s novels highlight the dynamic movement and spatialized characters and how they cope with the change of social power rapidly. In his works, the characters are characterized by their practical acceptance of modern values that are rising as a new trend decisively, in spite of the ethical confusion created because of the transition during this period between the mingled modernity and anti- modernity.
At the ground level, there is public space created by the new trends that are constantly evolving and regenerating instead of space that is fixed to the values of the previous age. Therefore, unlike previous novels in which a character’s private behavior is trapped in private space, the private behavior of characters appearing in Choi Chansik’s novels is closely connected with the public space, and this space is described with aspects that exert significant influence on their behavior. Choi Chansik’s novels portray not only the aspects of classical novels but also the newness of modernity, and this is because his characters are arranged in the new interests of the changing society along the flow of capital and the new values that are generated in the public space.
The main character’s behavior, for instance, leaving their home and going to a foreign land all by themselves to study or pursue an academic career with no regard to their family’s sacrifice is similar to that of the main characters in heroic romance novels leaving their home or training themselves. At the same time, looking into it more closely, we find that the main characters in Choi Chansik’s novels are differentiated from those in heroic romance novels as the latter sacrifice themselves for a bigger goal, for example, giving up their life for their family or state’s safety. Main characters in Choi Chansik’s novels tend to display an attitude of ego that embraces private ambition and can be seen as selfish as they are portrayed as modern individual “desiring to the fullest” unlike the main characters in heroic romance novels.
According to feudal values, life as an individual subject and exposure of private desires may have been treated as vices, but Choi Chansik’'s novels show the behavior of seeking secular welfare faithful to selfishness as a positive new era value. In the end, Choi Chansik’'s novel succeeded in securing popularity by introducing a modern capitalist perspective that creates the virtue of the private self and the interests of men and women and portray the individual as a desirable person who is faithful to his or her own interests.
