Vowel Quantity in Czech Language

초록

The goals of this paper are twofold: First, it is to identify exceptional cases in the representation of vowel quantity based on the Late Common Slavic (LCS) accentual paradigms in Czech literary language. Stang (1957) claimed that in Czech, acute and neo-acute are represented by length in the first syllable of disyllabic words, while circumflex is short. However, exceptional cases are often found like kniha ‘book’ (old acute) and hvězda ‘star’ (neo-acute) where the first syllable is short.
Thus, it has been discussed that Czech quantitative differences may not be explained directly from the LCS accent patterns (Bethin (1998), Mann (1957)).
Given that background, the second goal of this paper is to see whether those exceptions had a long vowel in Old Czech.If the archaic forms of kniha and hvězda are found with length, it means that LCS tonal distinctions were originally reflected in Czech quantity. Since quantity is one of the prosodic features, it might be hard to capture vowel quantity in an archaic language. In other words, the language internal and historical evidence will be ambiguous in deciding the origin of quantity.
One of the solutions is to see a dialect geography, which makes quantity interpretation more plausible than other ways. It is because when the reflexes of vowel quantity are viewed in terms of dialectal geography, it is possible to see the distribution and variation of vowel length throughout the Czech territory and to compare the length reflexes with the literary language, and it is even possible to find a direction of historical changes in the vowel quantity. In a divergence of vowel quantity among Czech dialects, this paper will focus on which dialect preserves archaic quantity and which dialect had an influence on the quantity of the literary language. In addition, I will see if there are certain phonological and morphological conditions on the vowel quantity in the literary language.
Finally, all of the findings will be listed in order to disprove the argument that Czech quantitative differences cannot be explained directly from LCS accent patterns.
