Ju Yosup(1902-1972) was one of the least known novelists despite the popularity of a few of short stories including "Mother and the Guest of Waiting Room" in the academia of the Korean literature. Ju Yosup wrote about forty short stories, three long novels, and two English novels. Now we should recognize Joo as one of the major novelists in the history of modern Korean literature, even though some of his short stories and novels have not yet been published in book-form.
When reading Ju's short stories and novels, we can point out one of his major themes: the ethics of compassion and the principle of love. This theme seems to come from Ju's fundamentally humanistic view of life and society. The aim of this essay is thus to discuss this theme in his first major novel, Dreaming on the Cloud published serially in Dong-A Ilbo, a daily newspaper in the years of 1930-31.
It is generally understood that Ju Yosup had been much influenced by Ahn Changho, a prominent leader of Korean Independence Movement, and Lee Kwangsoo, the first builder of modern Korean literature. Ju respected Ahn as a life-time moral teacher and admired Lee as a great man of letters in our times. Both Ahn and Lee accepted Christianity in their early years and kept the basic doctrine of Christianity: "God is Love".
In Dreaming on the Cloud, Park Junsik, thirty-year-old single man, protagonist of the novel left the port of Jemulpo in 1899 for America to earn a great amount of money as a laborer. But contrary to his expectation, he was sold as a slave-worker to a plantation farm in Mexico. Junsik escaped out and finally settled in San Francisco in the United States and earned a lot of money to marry a picture-bride from Chosun Korea. Sunae, his wife, bore him the son, Jimmy, but to his great dismay she ran away from him with her new lover. Junsik had to take care of his baby son.
Junsik suffered from a series of failures but never hated Sunae. He faithfully did his duty to raise his son Jimmy up and forgave Sunae, his wife unconditionally. Junsik, now over sixty years old, got seriously wounded in a car accident and died at the hospital in Los Angeles. Junsik never fell down in depair but fully practiced the ethics of compassion and principle of love just like a devout Christian. Now we can say that Junsik's life was not a complete loser but a born-again winner in terms of Christianity.
