윤흥길의 <매우 잘 생긴 우산 하나>에 나타난 권력의 양상 (Study on the Aspect of Power in Yun Heung-Gil's )

초록

본고에서는 윤흥길의 「매우 잘 생긴 우산 하나」에 나타난 권력의 양상을 살폈다. 1980년대에는 우리 사회에 만연한 권력의 횡포나 폭력을 알레고리로 승화시켜 우의적으로 드러낸 소설이 많이 등장하였는데, 본고에서 텍스트로 선정한 「 매우 잘 생긴 우산 하나」도 그 대표적 작품이라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 소설 속인물이 보이는 행위를 분석하여 이 작품이 쓰인 시대적 상황과의 연결고리를 찾고, 당시에 권력이 어떻게 작동하였는지 그 양상을 살펴 이 소설이 지니는 사회적 의미와 작가 의식을 밝혔다.
작가는 주인공 김달채 씨가 권력을 형성하는 과정과 권력을 행사하는 모습, 그리고 권력이 몰락하게 되는 과정을 군중들의 시선과 ‘우산=무전기’라는 사물을 통해 드러내고 있다. 주인공은 친구로부터 우산을 얻고, 그 우산이 무전기와유사한 형태를 띠고 있어 사람들의 시선을 빼앗는다. 이로써 권력을 형성하는데, 군중들은 주인공이 지닌 무전기를 훔쳐보며 스스로를 감시하고 규율하는 행태를보인다. 이는 푸코가 말한 미시 권력, 즉 규율 권력이 1980년대 사회에 얼마나뿌리 깊게 형성되어 작용하고 있었는지를 보여 준다. 또한 김달채 씨는 군중들의시선과 보이지 않는 규율 권력을 감지하고 권력을 가시적으로 행사하려는, 권력지향적 인물로 변화한다. 그는 우산을 지니고 있는 자신의 힘을 과시하고자 일부러 사람들에게 무전기를 노출하면서 사람들의 시선을 끌고 그것을 즐긴다. 작가는 이 시선 끌기를 통해 1980년대 권력 구조와 사회를 간접적으로 비판하면서당시 군중들이 얼마나 자주 권력의 폭력성에 노출되었었는지를 드러낸다. 아울러 무전기의 실체가 밝혀지고 시선이 역전되면서 비극적 결말을 맞이하는 김달채 씨의 모습 속에는 부당한 방법으로 획득한 권력과 그 권력을 소유하려고만하는 신군부가 어떤 논리로든 자신들을 합리화하고 권력을 행사하려 해도 그것은 허상일 뿐이라는 작가의 날카로운 시선이 배어 있다.
윤흥길은 이 작품을 통해 보이지 않는 감시의 시선, 권력자들을 향한 군중들의 시선, 사물 자체가 권력이 될 수 있음을 예리하게 포착하여 부당한 방식으로권력을 획득한 정권을 비판하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 아울러 권력에 무조건적 굴종의 자세를 취하는 군중과 실천적 행동을 하지 못하는 지식인 역시 비판의 대상으로 삼아, 권력에 대한 통찰과 성찰을 통해 현실의 모순을 극복해야 한다는시대의식을 드러내고 있다.

영어초록

This research aimed at investigating the aspect of the power in Yun Heung-Gil's A very handsome umbrella . During the 1980s, there were lots of novels that revealed tyranny and violence of the power prevailed in our society indirectly by sublimating into allegory, A very handsome umbrella , selected by this research as a text, can be said to be a representative work among them. This research intended to investigate the aspect how the power of that period acted by searching a link with the period situation that this work was written by analyzing the behavior that the character in the novel shows, and investigated the social meaning that this novel has and Yun Heung-Gil's writer consciousness.
In ‘formation of power’, this research determined how Kim Dal-Chae, the main character, could acquire power and the social meaning that it has, based on the opportunity that he formed power.
The public showed the behavior of keeping watching and regulating oneself by peeping the umbrella=two-way radio that Kim Dal-Chae had, which revealed how the microscopic power that Foucault mentioned worked by being deeply rooted in the society of that time. Nevertheless, people felt anxiety and fear without reason while seeing the two-way radio, which can be said to be the condition as well as duty that were given to the application object by the microscopic power.
In 'growth of power', this research analyzed how the power of two-way radio worked. Kim, Dal-Chae regularly exerted power, from that point, operation of microscopic power turned into the operation of macroscopic power. Kim, Dal-Chae repelled the street roughs who harassed a female student in an alley with the umbrella=two-way radio. As the equation two-way radio=power appeared, exposure of two-way radio loaded a great power on him.
With the catalyst of this event, Kim Dal-Chae intended to draw people's sight in order to show off the power of the two-way radio.
The operation of power that appeared through this attraction of sight had a function of indirectly revealing the power structure and the society of 1980s, particularly, it proved how often the public during that time were exposed to violence of power. This can be said to be a part that the writer keenly grasped a fact that how our society of that period was oppressed by the power and the surrounding phenomena.
In ‘collapse of power’, this research analyzed the process that the truth of two-way radio was revealed and ruined. Kim Dal-Chae pushed the two-way radio toward the plain-clothes policemen for the purpose of helping the college students who demonstrated against the New Army Group. Kim Dal-Chae intended to exert power of two-way radio in thee practical level beyond the cognitive level, however the power was finally collapsed by the sight that penetrated the truth of two-way radio. Since Kim Dal-Chae cognized the power as possession instead of strategy, finally the power was collapsed. Here, the writer's keen sight was hidden in respect that the power acquired by unreasonable method and the dictatorship gove rnment that only intended to possess that power are only illusion however they rationalized with any logic and intended to exert it with reasonable way.
Through this work, Yun Heung-Gil revealed the period consciousness that the contradiction of reality should be overcome through the discernment and introspection of power by criticizing the government that acquired power with unreasonable way and targeting the public who unconditionally submit to the power as the object of criticism by keenly grasping the point that a sight and an object could be an power.
