초록

이 글은 서명 문아(西明圓測/文雅) 원측(613~696)의 최만년작으로 알려진 『인왕경소』의 중심 내용과 주요 특징을 중심으로 그의 사상을 재조명한 것이다. 서명 문아(西明圓測/文雅, 613~696)의 저술은 19부 80여권 내지 23부 108여 권에 이른다. 그런데 이들 각 저술들의 ‘이명 동서’(異名同書) 여부와 정확한 권차 등을 확정하기는 어렵다. 현존하는 것은『성유식론소』(집일본),『불설반야바라밀다심경찬』, 『무량의경소』,『해심밀경소』,『인왕경소』 등 5종이다. 그의 최만년작인 『인왕경소』의 원전이자 호국 신앙의 근거가 되었던『인왕경』은 불법의 내호가 곧 외호임을 보여주는 경전이다. 이 경전은 관공(觀空)이라는 자리행, 십지(十地)의 교화라는 이타행, 자리와 이타의 근거로서의 이제(二諦)의 불이(不二)를 통한 내호(內護)의 해석을 보여주며, 이 경전의 독송을 통한 호국(護國)과 호신(護身)의 효과를 통한 외호(外護)의 해석을 보여준다.
원측이 이해한 진제는 ‘하나의 진여에 의거해서’ 삼성을 모두 버리고 삼무성을 세웠다. 그리하여 그는 분별성을 버리고 분별무상성, 의타성을 버리고 의타무생성, 진실성을 버리고 진실무성성을 건립하였다. 그런데 진제와 청변은 삼무성에 의거하면 거의 동일하지만[大同], 청변이 건립하면서도 건립된 것을 고수하지 않는데 견주어 진제는 삼무성을 비안립제(非安立諦)로 보존한다는 점에서 차이가 있다.
또 원측이 인식한 현장은 변계소집성만 버리고 의타기성과 원성실성은 버리지 않는다. 그는 범부의 망정 속에 있는 변계소집성은 버려야 하지만 이치상으로 없고, 의타기성과 원성실성은 이치상으로 있지만 망정 속에 없어서 두 의미가 서로 다르다고 보았다. 이 때문에 삼성에 의거해서 삼무성을 건립한다고 보았다. 원측은 청변과 호법의 입장이 다른 것도 모두 용맹종과 미륵종의 입장에 의거한 해석 때문으로 보았다. 이처럼 원측은 원융적 독법에 입각한 경전관을 보여주었고 회통적 관점에 의거한 학문관을 보여주었다.
원측이 의거한 호법은 용수의 공과 자씨의 유에 대한 두 가지 집착을 모두 논파하고 중도를 건립하여 의타기성은 공도 아니고 유도 아니라고 하였다. 그는 공집과 유집을 버리고 대승의 불이중도(不二中道)를 깨달아야 한다고 역설하였다. 원측은 이를 뒷받침하기 위해 호법의『대승광백론석론』을 원용하여 논증을 덧붙였다. 동시에 그는 소승의 살바다종과 경부종, 대승의 용맹종과 미륵종의 주장을 원용하여 인식과 사유의 너비를 넓힌 뒤에 이들 논의를 불설의 핵심인 중도사상으로 통합해 가고 있다. 따라서 원측의 최만년작인『인왕경소』는 철학자이자 번역가로서의 성숙한 사상과 면모를 보여주는 저작이자 그의 대표작이라고 할 수 있다.

This paper reexamines the thought of Woncheuk, centering on the main content and key features of his final work, Sutra for Humane Kings Commentary. Ximing Moona Woncheuk (西明圓測/文雅, 613–696) authored approximately 19 to 23 works, comprising 80 to over 100 volumes. However, determining the exact number and identifying cases of “different titles for the same work” remain challenging. His extant works include Discourse on the Theory of Consciousness-only Commentary, Sutra on the Perfection of Wisdom Exposition, Sutra of Innumerable Meanings Commentary, Explanation of the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, and Sutra for Humane Kings Commentary. His final work, Sutra for Humane Kings Commentary, became a foundation of national protective faith, highlighting that preserving the Dharma internally is essential for safeguarding the nation externally.
This sutra illustrates the practice of self-benefit through contemplative emptiness, benefitting others through the Ten Stages of Bodhisattva development, and the interpretation of internal Dharma protection through the non-duality of the Two Truths. It demonstrates external protection through the effects of national and personal security gained by reciting the sutra.
Woncheuk’s understanding of ultimate truth involves establishing the three kinds of “absence of nature” (三無性) by discarding the three natures(三性) of Consciousness-only. Thus, he discards the imagined nature to establish impermanence, relinquishes the dependent nature to show non-arising, and rejects the ultimate nature to indicate the absence of intrinsic existence. Paramârtha and Bhāviveka similarly emphasize the three absences of nature, but while Bhāviveka does not adhere to what he establishes, Paramârtha preserves the three absences of nature as an un-posited truth.
Woncheuk also interprets Xuanzang’s theory by discarding only the imagined nature while retaining the dependent and ultimate natures. He posits that imagined nature must be eliminated as it exists only in ordinary beings’ delusions, whereas dependent and ultimate natures exist in principle but not within delusions. Therefore, he bases the establishment of the three absences of nature on the three natures. He attributes the differences between Bhāviveka and Dharmapāla to their respective interpretations based on the Schools of Nāgârjuna and Maitreya.
Woncheuk’s interpretation reflects a comprehensive understanding of scripture rooted in harmonious integration. Dharmapāla, on whom Woncheuk relies, refutes attachments to both Nāgârjuna’s emptiness and Maitreya’s existence, establishing the Middle Way, asserting that dependent nature is neither void nor existent. Emphasizing the Mahayana path of non-duality, Woncheuk uses Dharmapāla’s Commentary on the Extensive Treatise of the Great Vehicle to support this view. Additionally, he integrates perspectives from the Sarvāstivāda and Sautrāntika schools of the Lesser Vehicle, as well as from Nāgârjuna and Maitreya of the Great Vehicle, broadening his insight and synthesizing these into the Middle Way as central to Buddhist teachings.
Thus, Woncheuk’s final work, Sutra for Humane Kings Commentary, reflects his mature philosophy and insight as a philosopher and translator, establishing it as his representative work.
