초록

고성 운흥사에 봉안되어 있는 대웅전 삼세불상과 지장시왕상은 1683년에 색난이 조성한귀중한 불상이다.
대웅전 삼세불상은 대웅전이 새로 이전을 마친 1683년 1월 전후에 당대 최고의 수조각승색난이 조성한 것으로 판단되며 그것은 대웅전 불단 하대묵서명과 와룡산 동구 신건법당기와 명부전 지장보살상 발원문에 의하여 알 수 있게 되었다.
대웅전 삼세불상의 도상과 양식적 특징은 색난의 스승인 인균 작 불상 특징을 잘 계승하고 있으며 이와 함께 색난의 수조각승으로서의 첫 작품인 1670년 대흥사 상원암 아미타삼존상을 이어받아 그 특징을 가장 잘 보여주고 있다.
명부전 지장시왕상은 지장보살 발원문에 있다시피 1683년 6월에 완성된 것으로 도상과양식 특징이 색난 작 불상들과 일치하며 특히 1680년 덕림사 지장시왕상과 1687년 은하사지장시왕상과 거의 유사한 편이다.
운흥사 삼세불상과 지장시왕상은 17세기 후반기 당대 최고의 수조각승 색난 조성 불상가운데 삼세불상의 유일한 예이며, 지장시왕상도 가장 세련된 상으로 평가된다.
운흥사는 고성 해안 입구에 위치한 통영 삼도수군통제부에 인근 해 있어서 승군수군의주둔지로 최적의 사찰이어서 임란 당시 의승군의 본산이었고 그 후 수군과 운흥사는 밀접한관계를 유지하고 있다. 이런 까닭으로 통제부(통제사와 장군)에서 운흥사 중창에 지대하게공헌했고 아울러 운흥사에서는 임란 전사자를 위하여 매년 2월 8일 영산대제를 지내는 것이 관례로 내려오고 있다.

영어초록

The Buddhas of the Three Ages and the Jijang Shiwang Statue enshrined in the Daeungjeon hall of Unheungsa Temple in Koseong are invaluable Buddhist statues created by Saek-nan in 1683. It is believed that the Buddhas of the Three Ages was created by Saek-nan, the most renowned sculptor of the time, around January 1683, when the Daeungjeon hall had just been moved to its new location, and it is confirmed by the Daeungjeon altar inscription and records in “Waryongsan Donggu Sin-geon Beopdang-gi” and the enshirining script of Myeongbujeon Jijang Bodhisattva Statue. The iconography and stylistic features of the Buddhas of the Three Ages are closely related to those of In-gyun, Saek-nan's teacher, showing a clear continuation of his teacher's influence.
Additionally, this statue reflects the characteristics of Saek-nan's first work as a head sculptor, the Amitabha Triad at Daeheungsa Temple in 1670, which is regarded as a significant example of his early style. As shown in the enshirining script of Jijang Bodhisattva Statue, the Jijang Shiwang Statue in the Myeongbujeon is said to have been completed in June 1683, and the iconography and stylistic features of this statue are consistent with the statues created by Saek-nan, and it is particularly similar to the Jijang Shiwang Statue at Deoklimsa Temple in 1680 and that of Eunhasa Temple in 1687. The Buddhas of the Three Ages and the Jijang Shiwang Statue at Unheungsa Temple are the only known examples of Saek-nan's works in the Buddhas of Three Ages style among the statues he created in the late 17th century. The Jijang Shiwang Statue is also regarded as the most refined example of the style, considered the best in its class. Unheungsa Temple, located near the entrance to the coastline in the Koseong region and close to the Tongyeong Samdo Naval Headquarters, was the optimal location for the stationing of naval monk soldiers and was the main stronghold for the righteous monk army during the Imjin War. Afterward, the temple and the naval forces maintained a close relationship. For this reason, the Naval Command (the Commander and General) made significant contributions to the rebuilding of Unheungsa Temple, and it has become customary for the temple to hold the Yeongsan Grand Rite on February 8th each year to honor the soldiers who died in the Imjin War.
