초록

The purposes of this study were to understand the aesthetic characteristics of floral patterns and identify their aesthetic values through their types and expressive methods by examining the concept of body painting, the formative and symbolic qualities of floral patterns,and the characteristics of floral patterns in body painting. As for methodology, literature study was conducted with the related literature and previous studies home and abroad. In addition, the investigator visited the World Body Painting Festival of 2011 and reviewed the works submitted in the festival on the concerned websites. The research scoped included 345 works submitted to the festival for the last five years from 2006 to 2011 with an analytical focus on 175 with floral patterns. The floral patterns in body painting were categorized into the solid and plane type. The plane type, a principal expressive method in body painting, included style, realistic, and abstract expressions. The prevalence of the style and abstract expressions indicates that the floral patterns are used as a means of diverse expressive arts based on free expressions to break down the format of reality society rather than reproduction. More realistic expressions used floral patterns alone than style and abstract expressions, which is because the reproduction technique can highlight the characteristics of floral patterns well and maximize their rhythmical sense and splendor. The formative characteristics of floral patterns were analyzed based on the types of floral images in body painting along with their aesthetic characteristics. As a result, such aesthetic values as elegant, grotesque, and comic image were identified. Bodypainting, floral, elegant, grotesque, comic.
