초록

The spirit of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter lies in conveying the themes of sin, forgiveness, and redemption through its creative use of ‘romance,’ in which a narrator plays a major role. First, Hawthorne’s narrator assumes an ambivalent attitude, providing multiple explanations, which thereby leads readers to think differently and forgive even sinners. Secondly, Hawthorne’s narrator portrays the psychology of characters and their change, securing inner causality. In contrast, Hauser’s ‘voice-over’ in the PBS drama version, which seems very faithful to Hawthorne’s novel, does not have such roles. The narrator’s ambiguities in Hawthorne’s work are omitted to make a simple, realistic melodrama—a tragic love story of betrayal and revenge. The narrator’s critical attitude towards Hester in the original text is changed to favorably characterize Hester as a feminist and to criticize Puritan patriarchal society itself. Inner causality in the characters’ change is overlooked as well. These changes in the role and use of the narrator in Hauser’s version result in its failure to capture the essence of the source text. The comparison between Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Hauser’s drama version illuminates the original work’s essence and the crucial role of a narrator in conveying it.
