방법으로서의 연애-여성혐오와 근대 인식－염상섭 초기작을 중심으로－ (Love-Misogyny as a method & Modern Recognition－Centered on Early Works by Yeom Sang-Seop－)

초록

본 논문은 염상섭의 근대 초기 연애소설을 통해 연애의 시대 속에서 ‘시대의 연애’를 보고 있으며, 다른 근대 인식으로 나아가는 작가만의 시선을확인한다. 염상섭이 그 시기 다른 작가와 차별화되는 지점은 1920년대 정형화되었던 ‘신성한 연애’가 현실에서 실천될 경우 궁극적으로 불가능한 것임을 ‘아는 것’이다. 또한 이는 신성한 연애의 모순이 가장 선명하게 드러나는 것이 그것의 반대항으로 불리지만 사실은 필수적인 경유지였던 ‘오염된 연애-여성혐오(misogyny)’의 지점임을 ‘아는 것’에서 연유한다. 작가는그 누구보다 시대의 현실을 정확히 파악했기에, 신성한 연애의 주체와는다른 근대적 주체의 정체성을 확보할 수 있게 된다.
구체적으로 <암야>(2장)는 신성한 연애가 현실에서는 ‘소외의 연애’ 밖에는 될 수 없음을 목도한다. X(남성)는 자신의 감정으로부터 소외되고, N(여성)은 등장하지 않으면서도 ‘연민-멸시’를 오고가는, 즉 여성혐오를통해 배제될 수 없음을 발견하게 된다. 그러나 X는 식민지 시대가 난세임을 자각하였고 근대성에 대한 각성까지 이루었지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 연애를 완전히 포기하지 못한다.
따라서 작가는 <제야>(3장)에서 신성한 연애의 반대편이라 여겨지는, 신여성이 행하는 오염된 연애를 끝 간 데까지 밀어붙여보는 ‘실험의 연애’ 를 감행한다. 이 실험은 먼저 여성혐오를 도구화하여 방패로 삼은 후 이루어진다. 전면화 된 오염된 연애는 그간 가려져 있는 ‘여성 주체’를 가시화하고, 연애는 일방적 감정이 아닌 ‘관계’였음을 드러낸다. 더하여 식민지근대에서 강한 남성 주체를 가능하게 했던 ‘우-열’의 관계까지 무화시킴으로써 근대성의 환상을 걷고, 그것을 환멸하는 데까지 나아간다. 이는 다른근대성의 개성을 찾을 수 있는 계기가 된다.
<해바라기>(4장)는 연애의 환상이 사라진 현실에 ‘교환의 연애’가 남았음을 보여준다. 영희와 순택이 보여주는 교환의 연애는 그간 부정되었던물질적 조건을 기반으로 하지만 도덕적 가치판단이나 이상적 기준을 강요받지 않기에 자유롭다. 이러한 연애에는 근대성의 환상-여성혐오를 통해구성되었던 강한 남성 주체가 존재하지 않는다. 대신 식민지 남성/여성 모두 허약하고 불안할 수밖에 없는 약한 주체라는 것을 확인하게 된다. 하지만 이는 식민지 지식인의 개성을 발견하는 순간이기도 하다. 이들은 시대의 불구성을 알고 자신의 약함도 인정하지만 그것을 알기에 도리어 현실에서 쉽사리 눈 돌리지 않으며 더욱 응시하는 자이자, 강자의 논리를 따라가는 대신 다른 길을 찾아보려는 자이기 때문이다.
이러한 근대 인식은 작가 염상섭의 정체성과도 연결된다. 그는 관찰자이자 중계자로서 모든 것을 냉소하는 태도를 고수함으로써, 무한히 발전할수 있는 정신생활을 포기하지 않는 개성의 주체가 된다. 그는 타자를 끊임없이 관찰하고 사유하는 것을 통해 자아의 자리를 확보한다. 여기서 작가염상섭만이 확보한 개성의 의미와 이후 그의 서사 세계를 균형감 있게 지탱해준 토대를 발견하게 된다.

영어초록

This paper identifies a perspective of the writer Yeom Sang-Seop's own, seeing the ‘love of the age’ in the period of the love and proceeding toward another different modern recognition in his early modern love stories. Differentiation of Yeom Sang-Seop from other writers in those days originates from ‘knowing’ that ‘sacred love’ standardized in 1920s is eventually impossible in the reality and ‘knowing’ that the point where contradictions of the sacred love manifest themselves most clearly is contaminated love-misogyny, an inevitable stopover though called its contrary term. The writer comes to ensure the identity of the modern subject different from that of the sacred love due to correct understanding on the periodic reality.
In particular, <A Dark Night>(Chapter 2) witnesses that the sacred love is forced to be ‘love of alienation’ in the reality. X(male) is alienated from his feeling and N(female) passes between ‘sympathy-contempt’ though she does not appear, in other words, finding out that it is not possible to be excluded through misogyny.
However, though recognizing that the colonial era is turbulent with awakening of modernity, X does not give up love at all.
Hence, in <A Watch Night>(Chapter 3), the writer carries out the ‘love of experiment’ regarded as the opposite of the sacred love, pushing ahead with the contaminated love done by the new woman.
This experiment is conducted after instrumentalizing the misogyny and using it as a shield. Contaminated love that comes to the surface visualizes hidden ‘female subject’ and reveals that love is the ‘relation’ rather than one-sided feeling. In addition, it paralyzes even the relation of the ‘superior-inferior’ that caused the strong male subject in the colonial age so eliminates the illusion of modernity and disillusions it. It offers an opportunity for finding out an individuality of another modernity.
<Sunflower>(Chapter 4) shows that there remains the ‘love of exchange’ in the reality where illusion of love disappeared. The love of exchange shown by Young-Hui and Sun-Taek is based on material conditions denied so far but freed from moral valuation and ideal standard. Such love does not have the strong male subject formed by illusion of modernity-misogyny. Instead, it is possible to identify that both males/females in the colonial age are beings weak and anxious.
However, it is the moment that discovers the individuality of colonial intellects. They are those who recognize the disability of the period and their own weakness but stare at the reality rather than turning away their eyes and search for another way rather than following the logic of the powerful.
Such recognition on the modernity is connected to the identity of Yeom Sang-Seop. He comes to be the subject of the individuality who does not give up the spiritual life that may develop infinitely by sticking to a cynical attitude on everything as an observer and mediator. He ensures a place for ego through observing and thinking of others continually. Here, we may find out the meaning of the individuality that only the writer Yeom Sang-Seop has and a balanced foundation that supports his narrative world hereafter.
