고성 운흥사 의겸 작 영산회괘불도 연구 (A Study on the “Yeongsanhoi Banner Paintings” by Uigyeom at Unheung-sa Temple in Goseong)

초록

본 논문은 1730년(雍正8년)에 조성한 운흥사 <영산회괘불도>의 양식 특징에 대한 연구이다. 화면의 세로 크기가 약 11m에 달하는 거대한 불화로 본존상인 석가모니불을 중심으로 그 권속들을 배치하고 있다. 안정적인 구도, 건장하면서도 온화한 표정의 도상 표현, 색채의 조화, 생동감이 있는 필선, 독특한 문양 묘사 등으로 시선을 사로잡고 있는데 이는 화승 ‘의겸’의 화풍과 창의적인 예술성이 집약된 최고의 작품으로 여겨진다.
또한 150자 가량의 범자(梵字)가 존상의 중앙계주, 미간, 눈 위, 눈동자, 눈 아래, 입술, 가슴, 배, 다리, 발 등 화면 곳곳에 기록되어 있어 예배화로서 상징과 의미를 더욱 부각시켜주고 있으며 괘불도를 보관하는 궤(櫃)도 함께 남아있는데 매우 섬세하고 세련된 금속 장식이장엄되어 있어 이 또한 매우 특징적이다.
연구 결과 첫째, 의겸은 18세기를 대표하는 최고의 화승으로 주제도 다양하게 조성하고있으며 화면크기에 어울리게끔 개성 있는 구도를 연출하고 있다.
둘째, 오종범음집과 조상경의 내용을 근거로 하여 도상 특징을 표현하고 있는데 운흥사 <영산회괘불도>에서 석가모니불과 문수·보현보살 등의 당당하고 위엄 있는 모습과 얼굴형태에서 느껴지는 단아하고 온화한 표정의 묘사는 의겸이 지닌 독특한 양식임을 알 수 있으며 다채로운 색채로 화려한 분위기를 자아내는 등 그의 창의적인 예술성을 살펴볼 수 있다.
셋째, 다양한 색채를 사용함에도 불구하고 번잡스럽지 않게 분위기를 묘사하고 있다. 주로 조채된 색은 진홍색 계통과 양녹색으로 강한 보색대비를 이루는데 이뿐만이 아니라 호분이 들어간 황토색이나 육색 등을 보조색으로 사용하여 차분하고 온화한 분위기를 효과적으로 나타내고 있다.
넷째, 화면에 묘사된 문양 표현은 의겸만의 창의성이 돋보이고 있는데 화려하고 장식적이며 격조 있는 완성도를 높여주는 특징을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 이러한 문양 묘사는 그의 제자인‘색민’의 불화에도 유사하게 시문되고 있어 ‘의겸유파’의 전승관계와 성향 둥 을 알 수 있는부분이다.
이와 같이 운흥사 <영산회괘불도>는 18세기 야외에서 행해진 불교 의식의 성격과 화승의겸의 도상과 양식 특징을 확실하게 보여주는 대표적 괘불도인 것을 충분히 파악할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper is a study on the stylistic characteristics of the “Yeongsanhoi Banner Paintings” at Unheung-sa Temple, created in 1730. These are huge Buddhist paintings with a vertical size of approximately 11 meters, arranging the main statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in the center with his attendants around him. They capture attention with their stable composition, healthy yet gentle expression, color harmony, lively brush strokes, and unique pattern depiction, and they are considered the best work that encapsulates the painting style and creative artistry of painter-monk ‘Uigyeom’.
In addition, about 150 Sanskrit characters(梵字) are written all over the screen, including the central ridge of the statue, between the eyebrows, above the eyes, pupils, below the eyes, lips, chest, stomach, legs, and feet, which further highlights the symbolism and meaning of the painting as a worship painting, and the chest(櫃) that stores Buddhist banner paintings also remains, which is very unique as it is decorated with very delicate and sophisticated metal decorations.
From the research results, first, Uigyeom is the best painter-monk representing the 18th century, creating diverse themes and creating unique compositions that match the screen size.
Second, based on the contents of “Ojongbeomumjip” and “Josanggyeong”, the characteristics of the icons are expressed, and in the “Yeongsanhoi Banner Paintings” at Unheung-sa Temple, the dignified and majestic appearances of Sakyamuni Buddha, Manjusri, and Samantabhadra, etc., and the elegant and gentle expressions felt in the facial forms are Uigyeom's unique style, and his creative artistry can be seen, such as the splendid atmosphere created by the use of various colors.
Third, despite using a variety of colors, the atmosphere is depicted without being cluttered. The colors used are mainly crimson and green, creating a strong complementary color contrast. In addition, yellow-ochre and flesh-colored colors with a whitish tint are used as auxiliary colors, effectively expressing a calm and gentle atmosphere.
Fourth, the expression of patterns depicted on the screen is a testament to Uigyeom's unique creativity, and you can find features that enhance the level of completion by being splendid, decorative, and classy. This pattern description is also engraved similarly in the Buddhist paintings of his disciple, ‘Saekmin’, and it is a part that allows us to know the transmission relationship and tendency of the ‘Uigyeom sect’.
In this way, the “Yeongsanhoi Banner Paintings” at Unheung-sa Temple were able to sufficiently demonstrate the nature of Buddhist ceremonies performed outdoors in the 18th century and the iconographic and stylistic characteristics of Painter-monk Uigyeom.
