초록

현대시조는 고려 후반 전통시가에서 형성된 고시조를 700여년 동안 계승해 왔다. 그것은 현재 전국적으로 다양한 사유를 가진 3000여명에 달하는 시조 시인들이 시조 정신의 전통을 보전하며 축적된 문화적 인프라를 구축하고 있으므로 가능한 일이다. 이는 한국의 고유문화 예술 창달을 있게 한 시조 시인들의 중대한 업적이자 공로가 아닐 수 없다.
본고는 불교문학을 통해 시인들의 창작 의욕을 고취 시키고 문학적 성취를 보인 시조 시인들에게 수여하는 현대불교문학상의 성격을 규명하고 그 의미를 통찰했다. 현대불교문학상은 현대불교문인협회에서 주관하는 상으로 한류 문화 속에서 고유한 민족의 위상을 가지는데, 특히 시조 부분을 시상하고 있다는 점에 주목할 수 있다. 불교문학에서 시조는 시와 소설과 달리 전통적 형식과 고유한 장르적 특성 속에서 불교성을 함의하는 데서 타 장르와 구별되며 문학사적 가치를 지닌다. 이른바 불교 시조는 시조라는 형식과 불교라는 내용을 담보하고 있을 때 비로소 그 면모를 지닐 수 있게 된다. 게다가 ‘한국 불교’가 지향하는 것이 ‘호국 종교’라는 점과 ‘현대시조’의 출발점이 ‘전통시가’라는 점은 공통적으로 민족의식의 원천이며 유무형의 정신적인 자원이라는 사실을 시사해 준다.
반면 현직 작가들에게 수여되는 문학상의 유래는 1955년 『현대문학』에서 제정한 ‘현대문학상’이, 시조 부문에서는 1979년 가람시조 운영위원에서 제정한 ‘가람시조문학상’이 최초의 문학상이다. 현대문학상은 1955년 『현대문학』의 창간과 함께 제정된 문학상으로 시․소설․희곡․비평 부문으로 나누어 그 해에 우수한 작품을 창작한 작가에게 시상하고, 수상작은 수상 작품집을 발간하는 것이 특징이다. 또한 ‘가람시조문학상’은 현대시조의 아버지라 불리는 가람 이병기 선생의 문학정신을 기리기 위해 그 해에 시조 문학 발전에 이바지한 역량 있는 시조 시인에게 수여하는 문학상이다.
이같이 현대문학사적으로 볼 때 불교 시조 문학상은 현대문화 현상으로서 시조가 창작되고 유통되는 가운데 특정 시조 시인에게 수여한다는 측면에서 유의미한 가치가 있다. 이것은 한국문학만이 가지고 있는 고전적 의식이면서 명징한 문학적 특징으로서 가능성을 보여준다. 이를 위하여 2장에서는 현대시조 문학상의 종류와 특징을 살펴보고, 3장에서는 시조 수상작의 불교적 성격과 양상을 연구방법과 같이 세 가지 관점에서 탐구했다.

This paper elucidates the nature of contemporary Buddhist literary awards bestowed upon poets who have demonstrated creative enthusiasm and literary achievements through Buddhist literature. It provides insights into the significance of these awards, which thrive on Buddhist sijo literature's values and poetic aspects, holding a distinctive position in the context of Korean Wave culture and embodying the unique cultural status of Buddhist sijo literature.
Modern sijo, evolving as the creative subject from the late Goryeo traditional poem song, has inherited and preserved the efforts of sijo poets for over 700 years, making it a significant achievement and contribution to the development of Korea's unique cultural and artistic heritage. Presently, over 3,000 sijo poets craft diverse thoughts into a standardized language, preserving the traditions of the national spirit and contributing to the establishment of cultural infrastructure nationwide through accumulated cultural heritage.
In Buddhist literature, sijo differs from poetry and novels by implying Buddhism within its traditional form and unique genre characteristics, possessing literary historical value. Buddhist sijo reveals its essence when it encapsulates the form of sijo and the content of Buddhism. Furthermore, the fact that 'Korean Buddhism aspires to be a 'patriotic religion' and the starting point of 'modern sijo' is 'traditional poem song' indicates a common origin of national consciousness, representing tangible and intangible spiritual resources.
On the other hand, literary awards given to contemporary authors have a precedent in the 'Modern Literature Prize' established by 'Hyundae Munhak' in 1955. In the sijo category, the 'Garam Sijo Literary Award,' initiated by the Garam Sijo Operation Committee in 1979, is the first literary award. The Modern Literature Prize, established in conjunction with the founding of 'Hyundae Munhak' in 1955, is awarded annually to outstanding works in the fields of poetry, fiction, drama, and criticism. Notably, winning works in the poetry and fiction categories are published as award-winning collections. The 'Garam Sijo Literary Award,' known as the father of modern sijo, is a literary award presented to sijo poets who have contributed significantly to the development of sijo literature in honor of the literary spirit of Garam Lee Byeonggi.
In this context, the Buddhist sijo literary award, presented to specific sijo poets as a phenomenon of indigenous culture, holds significant value when viewed in modern literary history. This reflects the classical consciousness unique to Korean literature, showcasing the potential of sijo's cultural expansiveness as an apparent literary characteristic. To explore this, Chapter 2 examines the types and characteristics of modern sijo literary awards. In contrast, Chapter 3 investigates the Buddhist nature and aspects of award-winning sijo works from three perspectives, including research methodology.
