서봉총 축조 시기와 피장자 검토 (A Study of the Construction Period and the Buried Person of Seobongchong Tomb)

이 글은 지금까지 확보된 발굴성과를 통해 서봉총 북분과 남분의 성격을 파악하고자 한 것이다. 서봉총은 경주 노서동에 축조된 고분으로 북분이 선축되고 남분이 후축된 표형분이다. 1926년과 1929년 일본 조선총독부의 주도로 첫 번째 발굴이 이루어졌지만, 조사내용의 부재로 2016년부터 2017년까지 국립중앙박물관에서 재발굴을 진행하였다. 서봉총 북분과 남분은 고분의 규모와 매장시설의 구조, 부장품 등 고분을 구성하는 여러 요소에서 상반된 양상이 확인된다. 서봉총의 축조 시기를 남분이 북분보다 늦게 축조된 점이 재발굴에서 확실하게 밝혀진 점과 북분과 남분에서 공통으로 출토된 이식과 토기류를 근거로 6세기 초로 판단하였다. 고분의 축조 시점에 맞추어 북분의 피장자를 6세기 초에 사망한 왕비로 추정하고 남분의 피장자는 북분의 피장자와 친연관계에 해당하는 인물로 이해했다. 6세기는 장제의 변화가 일어나는 시기로 서봉총 남분도 일정 부분 영향을 받았을 것으로 보이지만 남분과 비슷한 시기에 축조되고 같은 형식의 이식이 출토된 은령총과 보문동 고분(1918)과 비교했을 때 남분의 작은 봉분과 간소한 부장양상은 사회적 변화의 결과물이 아닌 피장자의 성격이 반영된 결과물로 판단하여 북분과 남분 피장자의 관계를 친연관계이면서 수직관계에 해당하는 인물로 추정했다.

영어초록

Seobongchong is a gourd-shaped twin tomb located in Noseodong, Gyeongju, which comprises northern and southern mounds built earlier and later respectively. The ancient tomb had been excavated in the year of 1926 and 1929 during the Japanese colonial rule but failed to attract scholarly attention in studies of ancient Silla tombs because no relevant report was published substantiating such excavation. To fill the hole in historical sense, the National Museum of Korea initiated investigation into Seobongchong from scratch. In 2014, the museum excavated articles from the tomb to produce a report and then went on to re-excavate the site for the period spanning 2016 to 2017. As a result of the attempt to re-excavate, new information was obtained substantiating that rituals commemorating deceased ancestors used to be performed outside of the tomb together with the tomb size and structure being corrected. This shows that difference between northern and southern mounds of Seobongchong is distinct from that of other twin tombs in general. Given that figuring out the characteristics of twin tomb requires analyzing each tomb and then examining the twin tomb on holistic terms, they looked into dry glass plates showing investigation made during the Japanese colonial rule as well as relevant materials secured recently to figure out when the ancient tomb was built and who the buried persons were. In doing so, they attempted to shed light on relationship between bodies found buried in northers and southern mounds of the ancient tomb. As a result of such investigation, it has turned out that both of the northern and southern mounds had been built in the early 6th century, which saw succession of kings from King Soji to King Jijeung. Importantly the orientation of the ancient tomb suggests that the buried person of Seobongchong could likely be linked to King Soji. In addition, the buried person of the northern mound is presumed to be a royal female from Silla, likely identified as Seonhye, a wife of King Soji.
