『지리산 그림자에 담긴 내 그림자 하나』의 개작 양상과 작가 의식 고찰 (A Study on the Aspects of Revision and Authorial Consciousness in『My one shadow contained in the shadow of Mt. Jiri』)

초록

본 논문은 오찬식의 『지리산 그림자에 담긴 내 그림자 하나』를 중심으로 작품의 개작 양상과 그 효과, 그리고 작품의 서술 방식에 함축된 작가 의식 등을 규명하고자 하였다. 『지리산 그림자에 담긴 내 그림자 하나』(1990)는 1984년에 『마뜰』이란 제목으로 처음 출간되었으며, 1989년에는 『지리산 빨치산』으로 개작되어 출간된 바가 있다. 『지리산 빨치산』은 『마뜰』의 단어와 문장을 일부 수정하는 정도에 그치고 있으나 『지리산 그림자에 담긴 내 그림자 하나』에는 ‘미군 남원양민 학살사건’과 ‘군경의 양민학살사건’에 관한 서술이 추가되어 있다. 이는 80년대 후반에 발표된 기사와 수기 등을 참고하여 추가한 것으로 확인되는데, 증인으로서의 책무를 강조하는 작가적 의지와 사회적‧정치적 상황을 고려하여 이데올로기적 편향을 점진적으로 해소하고자 했던 작가적 태도에서 연유한 것으로 판단된다. 이 작품은 이처럼 해방 이후 미군정의 지배와 6·25전쟁이라는 정치적·민족적 갈등의 소용돌이 속에서 민중들이 겪었던 고통의 실상을 개작을 통해 의식적으로 추가함으로써 민중의 수난상을 부각하고, 전쟁에 관한 본원적인 의문을 촉발하여 전쟁의 폭력성과 추악성을 일층 강렬하게 고발한다.
그리고 이 작품은 어린 소년이 분별력 있는 성적·사회적 주체로 성장해 가는 과정을 형상화한 성장소설로서 서술자의 개입이 두드러지는 특징을 지니고 있다. 특히 미숙한 소년 화자의 판단을 합리적인 추론 능력을 갖춘 서술자의 관점에서 뒷받침하고 있는 서술 방식이 주목되는데, 현물세에 대해 비판하는 장면이 대표적인 사례이다. 작가는 초점화자에 대한 서술자의 적극적 보증이라는 서술 방식을 통해 소년 화자의 신빙성을 강화하여 자신의 소임을 정성껏 수행하는 ‘장인’적 민중상을 제시함으로써 시류에 편승하며 허황된 이득을 추구했던 민중들의 무지와 우매를 질타한다. 그리고 이러한 장인이 교사이자 계몽가로서의 기능적 성격을 지니고 있다는 점에서, ‘장인’적 민중상에는 민중들을 계도하고자 했던 작가의 계몽 의식이 함축되어 있음을 추론할 수 있다. 이런 측면에서 이 작품은 민중의 각성과 계몽을 추동하고자 했던 성장소설이자 계몽소설이라고 할 수 있으며, 개작을 통해 부각된 민중의 수난상이 전쟁의 목적과 그 정당성에 대한 추궁으로 심화되지 못하고 있다는 점에서 분단소설과는 일정한 거리가 있는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The aim of this study is to examine the authorial consciousness according to the progress of the work, its effect and narrative strategy focusing on 『My one shadow contained in the shadow of Mt. Jiri(지리산 그림자에 담긴 내 그림자 하나)』 by Oh Chan Sik. 『My one shadow contained in the shadow of Mt. Jiri』(1990) was first published in 1984 as 『Mateul(마뜰)』 and it was revised and published as 『Mt. Jiri Partisan(지리산 빨치산)』 in 1989. Despite the two revisions, there are no major changes in key figures and central events. 『Mt. Jiri Partisan』 is a minor revision of 『Mateul』 such as some words and sentences. Yet, there was a remarkable increase/decrease in 『My one shadow contained in the shadow of Mt. Jiri』. In particular, it can be seen that the commentary on "the genocide of the US Army to people in Namwon" and "the massacre of the civilian population by the army and police" was added by referring to the articles and handouts published in the late 1980s. It was derived from the authorial willingness to gradually overcome ideological bias in consideration of vocation consciousness and social situation. This work intentionally adds to the reality of the suffering that the people had in the swirl of political and national conflict such as the domination of the US military government after the liberation and the Korean War. And, it clearly shows the violence and the surplus of the war along with the crowd of people.
In addition, this work is a growth novel that symbolizes the process of the inexperienced boy growing up as a sensible sexual / social subject, characterized by the intervention of the narrator. There are many scenes that support the judgment of a young boy speaker from the point of view of a narrator with reasoning ability. Such is characterized by the pre-modern thinking depending on Docham and criticism on tax in kind. In particular, the narrator compared the features of village people who realized the unfairness of the tax in kind with the ‘artisan’ who did the best for their duty criticizing the people's ignorance and foolishness, who had pursued fallacy gains. Considering that village people were trying to send their children to school at the end of the war and that 'I' also became a diligent and rational subject through further schooling, this intervention of the narrator is 'growth' of 'me' is s a proof that the author is in touch with the enlightenment of authorial consciousness. In this regard, this work is an enlightenment novel which was intended to bring out the arousal and enlightenment of the people by presenting the intangible people's image to perform the work diligently even in a turbulent environment.
