중년남성의 배우자 사별과정 : 질병으로 인한 배우자 사별을 중심으로 (Bereavement Process of the Middle-Aged Men who Have Experienced the Death of a Spouse : Focusing on Spousal Bereavement Due to Illness)

초록

본 연구는 중년남성의 배우자 사별과정을 이해하기 위한 경험의 구조와 과정에 대한 실체이론 구축을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 아내를 사별한 기간이 3년이 경과 되지 않은 8명의 중년남성들을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였고, 근거이론 방법에 따라 수집된 자료를 분석하였다. 자료를 분석한 결과, 최종적으로 151개의 개념과 48개의 하위범주 그리고 16개의 범주가 도출되었다. 패러다임에 의한 범주 분석 결과 중년남성의 배우자 사별과정에서의 인과적 조건은 ‘간병으로 지쳐가는 고달픈 삶’, ‘아내의 완치를 바라는 절박감’, ‘엄습해오는 아내임종의 위기감’, ‘아내죽음을 맞이하며 허망함’이었고, 중심현상은 ‘붕괴된 자신의 세계로 인한 절망감’으로 나타났다. 맥락적 조건은 ‘홀로 감내해야하는 가장역할의 한계’, ‘타인의식으로 위축된 대인관계’로 나타났으며, 중재적 조건은 ‘개인의 적응적인 내적 자원’, ‘삶의 버팀목이 되어준 가족’, ‘사회적 지지망의 지원’으로 나타났고, 작용/상호작용 전략으로는 ‘사별현실에 의식적 거리두기’, ‘아내와 지속되는 내적관계’, ‘삶을 살아내려는 현실적 노력’으로 도출되었다. 결과로는 ‘사별에 대한 자기수용력 증진’, ‘삶의 재구조화를 정립해 감’ 그리고 ‘진행 중인 사별의 삶’으로 나타났다. 핵심범주는 ‘상처(喪妻)한 절망을 안고 사별현실을 마주하며 살아냄’으로 나타났으며, 과정 분석 결과는 ‘압도 단계’, ‘회피 단계’, ‘접촉 단계’, ‘직면 단계’, ‘재정립 단계’의 총 5단계로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 중년남성의 배우자 사별과정을 이해하며, 사별 후 유가족들의 심리적 과정에 대한 사회적 관심을 끌어내는 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 또한, 배우자를 사별한 중년남성의 심리적 건강을 지원하기 위한 보다 체계적이고 전문적인 목회상담학적 접근과 지지체계를 세우는 데 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to develop a theory regarding the structure and process of spousal bereavement experiences of middle-aged men. For this purpose, the investigator conducted interviews with eight middle-aged men that were bereaved of their wives less than three years. The grounded theory method was applied to data collected with in-depth interviews with them for analysis.
As a result of analyzing the data, a total of 151 concepts, 48 subcategories, and 16 categories, were derived. The categories were analyzed with a paradigm, and the results reveal the following causal conditions in the spousal bereavement process of middle-aged men: “weary and tired life due to care,” “desperation for my wife's complete recovery,” “sense of crisis for my wife's death is hitting me,” and “feeling powerless in the face of my wife's death.” The central phenomenon was “desperation after the collapse of my world.” The contextual conditions include “limitations of my role as the head of household that I should endure by myself” and “my interpersonal relationships have been withdrawn as I am conscious of others.” The interventional conditions include “my personal adaptive internal resources,” “my family as my rock in life,” and “supports from the social support network.” The action/reaction strategies include “having conscious distance from the reality of bereavement,” “my ongoing internal relations with my wife,” and “realistic efforts to keep living my life.” The outcomes include “improving self-acceptance to bereavement,” “establishment of life reconstruction,” and “my life of bereavement still in progress.”
The core category appeared as “living with the despair of a lost wife and facing the bereavement reality,” and the process analysis result was a total of 5 stages of “overwhelming, avoidance, contact, facing, and reestablishment.” The results of this study help explain the process of bereavement of spouses in middle-aged men and can be used to draw attention to the social and psychological process of families after bereavement. It is also expected to be used to establish a more systematic and professional pastoral counseling approach and support system to support the psychological health of middle-aged men who have lost their spouses.
