초록

본고는 최윤 소설의 형식을 중심으로 재현의 차원을 넘어서는 문학적 역량이 최윤 소설 내부에서 발견됨을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 방법론적으로는 그간 선행 연구들이 최윤의 작품을 조명했던 방식인 ‘현실로 환원되지 않는 작품 내부의 차원’이 함의하는 가능성의 영역을 더욱 확장해보고자 한다. 사실을 둘러싼 진위논쟁은 수많은 증언 가운데 단수의 증언만을 승인함으로써 단일한 진실을 확보하지만, 복수(複數)의 증언들을 형성하는 일은 배제의 기제가 아닌 확장의 기제를 사용하여 진실의 영역을 넓혀가는 일이기 때문이다. 이를 위해 최윤 소설에서 독자 호명 방식을 사용하고 있는 작품 「저기 소리 없이 한 점 꽃잎이 지고」와 소설 내부에 부재하는 ‘당신’을 명시함으로써 복수의 ‘당신’을 가능케 하는 「당신의 물제비」, 그리고 이 작품의 의미화를 더욱 선명하도록 해주는 「벙어리 창(唱)」을 중심 텍스트로 삼아 분석한다. 독자 호명 방식이나 소설 외부의 존재인 ‘당신’은 모두 작품의 의미가 작품 내부에서 완결되지 않도록, 내부의 서사가 외부의 시선과 겹쳐지도록 하는 효과를 통해 의미를 확장한다는 점에 주목하고자 한다. 바흐친에 따르면, 단일한 의미를 지향하는 리얼리즘적 소설이 독백이라면, 의미의 확장은 대화적 관계이다.
2장에서는 그의 작품 형상화의 토대를 해석할 수 있는 이론들, 예컨대 번역가로서의 최현무가 소개한 이론과 해설을 참조하고, 3장과 4장에서는 이러한 사상적 토대가 그의 작품에 형상화되는 지점을 구체적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 3장에서는 1988년 『문학과사회』의 복간과 함께 등단한 등단작 「저기 소리없이 한 점 꽃잎이 지고」를 중심으로, 4장에서는 이후 발표된 소설 「벙어리 창(唱)」, 「당신의 물제비」를 중심 텍스트로 삼는다.
특히 3장과 4장에서 살피고자 하는, 시점을 교차하여 서술하거나 한 시대의 사건을 이후 세대의 시선으로 연결시키는 구성 형식을 주목하는 일은 지극히 문학적 형식으로의 접근이다. 문학언어와 현실언어의 엄밀한 구분을 전제로 하는 이와 같은 접근 방식은 현실에 대해 어떠한 영향을 미칠 의도를 전제로 출발하지 않는다. 그러나 이러한 시도가 산출하는 효과는 역설적이게도 문학 내부의 폐쇄된 지점으로 수렴하지 않고, 현실과 맞닿은 지점으로 귀결된다. 특히 「저기 소리 없이 한 점 꽃잎이 지고」나 「당신의 물제비」에서 ‘당신’의 존재는, 텍스트를 매개로 텍스트 내부의 목소리와 텍스트 밖의 존재가 소통하도록 만들면서 문학 내부의 시공을 현실로 연결하고 확장하는 효과를 만든다. 현실 변혁을 꾀하고자 하는 방편이 소설에 대한 근본주의적 태도를 표명하는 결과만을 유발했던 것과 대조적으로, 허구적 언어임을 자명한 것으로 받아들일 때 역설적으로 현실의 존재가 역사적 사건들을 의미화하는, 일종의 “돌림노래”로서의 가능성을 수행한다는 의의를 지닌다.

영어초록

This paper aims to reveal that literary competence beyond the dimension of representation is found inside Ch’oe Yun’s novel, focusing on the form of Ch’oe Yun’s novel. For this purpose, methodologically, we intend to further expand the area of possibility implied by the “dimension inside the work that is not reduced to reality,” which is the way previous studies have focused on Ch’oe Yun’s work. The dispute over authenticity over facts secures a single truth by approving only a single testimony among numerous testimonies, but forming the testimonies of the plural is to expand the realm of truth by using the mechanism of expansion, not the mechanism of exclusion. To this end, this paper analyze the work here A Petal Silently Falls which uses the reader’s calling method in Ch’oe Yun’s novel, Your Water Swallow which enables multiple “you” by specifying “you”, which is absent inside the novel, and The Dumb Window which makes the meaning of this work clearer. This paper would like to note that both the reader’s calling method and the existence outside the novel expand the meaning of the work through the effect of overlapping the internal narrative with the external gaze so that the meaning of the work is not completed within the work. According to Bakhtin, if a realistic novel aiming for a single meaning is a monologue, the expansion of meaning is a conversational relationship.
Chapter 2 refers to theories that can interpret the foundations of his work, such as the theories and explanations introduced by Hyunmoo Choi as a translator, and Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the points at which these ideological foundations are embodied in his works. The third chapter focuses on the novel There A Petal Silently Falls, which appeared in 1988 with the reprint of Literature and Society, and the fourth chapter focuses on the novels The Dumb Window and Your Water Swallow, which were published later.
In particular, it is an extremely literary approach to pay attention to the compositional form that intersects the points of view and connects the events of one era to the point of view of the next generation, which is examined in chapters 3 and 4. Such an approach, which presupposes a strict distinction between literary language and real language, does not start from the premise of any intention to have any influence on reality. However, paradoxically, the effect produced by such an attempt does not converge to a closed point within literature, but to a point of contact with reality. In particular, the existence of ‘you’ in There A Petal Silently Falls and Your Water Swallow creates an effect that connects and expands the time and space within literature to reality by making the voice inside the text communicate with the beings outside the text through the medium of the text. In contrast to the way in which the attempt to change reality only resulted in the expression of a fundamentalist attitude towards the novel, when we accept it as a self-evident fictional language, paradoxically, the existence of reality carries out the possibility of a kind of “Singing a Round” that signifies historical events.
