동일화 과정으로서의 기독교 입문식: RCIA를 중심으로 (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults as the Process of Identification)

초록

기독교의 입문식은 기독교인이 최초로 정체성을 구성하게 되는 입문 의례이다. 기독교인이 되어가는 정체성은 새롭게 맺어진 관계 형성을 토대로 이루어진다. 본 논문에서는 RCIA (Rite of Initiation of Adults, OICA: Ordo Initiationis Christianae Adultorum, 성인입교예식서)를 기반으로 한 가톨릭의 입문식을 검토한다. 가톨릭의 입문식은 단일사건이라기보다는 다양한 의례와 교육의 집합으로 이루어진 과정의 총체이다. 입문식의핵심은 의례와 교육을 통해서 새로운 관계를 형성해 나가면서 기독교의 주체가 되는 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 기독교의 주체가 되면서 정체성을 형성해 나가는데 결정적인 부분은 타자를 내부로 수용하여 주체가 구성되는 동일화 과정이라고 할 수 있다.
본 논문은 RCIA가 탄생하게 된 역사적 배경과 기존 연구들의 경향을 살펴본 후, 본논문의 연구가 프로이드와 라캉의 동일화 이론으로 입문식에서 기독교적 정체성이 형성되는 과정을 새롭게 해석함으로써 선행 연구를 보완함을 보여준다. 따라서 입문식 과정가운데, 새롭게 구성되는 관계의 단초를 찾기 위해서, 프로이드와 라캉의 오이디푸스 서사를 통해서 성인의 회심 과정과 인류학에서 연구된 성인식의 구조를 해석한다. 이어서, 오이디푸스의 최종 단계인 동일화 과정에 초점을 맞추어 기독교의 입문식과 기독교적주체 형성의 연관 관계를 살펴본다. 구체적으로, RCIA에 의거하여 수행되는 기독교의입문식의 과정에서 질적으로 다른 단계 별로 기능하는 동일화의 양상을 프로이드의 동일화 이론으로 검토한다. 이어서 라캉의 동일화 이론을 적용해서 기독교 입문식에서 종교적 자아와 종교적 주체가 탄생함을 제안한다.
상상적 동일화(imaginary identification)를 통해서 이상적 자아(imaginary ego) 가 형성되고 이는 개인적인 차원의 종교적 자아를 구성한다. 상징적 동일화(symbolic identification)를 통해서 자아이상(ego ideal)이 형성되고 사회적 차원의 종교적 주체를 구성한다. 종교적 자아는 신의 이미지와 교회의 가르침에 대한 관념적, 감정적 측면에서의식의 동일화를 통해서 형성된다. 반면 종교적 주체는 신의 로고스와의 무의식적 동일화를 통해서 상징적 관계를 형성하고, 교회법과 교리 등을 무의식의 차원에서 공유하면서 교회 공동체의 구성원으로서 동일 가치를 공유하게 된다. 주체는 자아를 포함한 포괄적 영역이기에, 사회적 차원의 종교적 주체가 개인적 차원의 종교적 자아를 조율하기도한다. 이와 같이, 기독교적 주체가 되면서 상상적인 종교의 세계와 상징적인 종교의 세계를 동시에 주체 내부에 형성해 나간다. 본 논문에서는 타자성과 주체성, 의식과 무의식, 개인과 사회의 측면이 동시에 구축되면서 기독교인으로서의 정체성이 형성되는 과정을 통합적으로 검토한다.

영어초록

The rite of Christian initiation is the primary rite to construct Christian identity. Christian Identity is becoming built on newly established relationships. A rite of initiation of Roman Catholicism based on RCIA (Rite of Initiation of Adults) is not a single event but a process as a collection of a variety of liturgy and education. The core of the rite of initiation is becoming a Christian subject by building a new relationship and incorporating otherness. The critical point of becoming a Christian subject belongs to identification that a subject subsumes the other(the Other) and becomes modified by such otherness.
Examining the historical background of the birth of the RCIA and many existing studies on it, this paper demonstrates that this research will compensate the results of previous studies by reinterpreting the process of forming Christian identity in the rite of initiation in light of Freud’s and Lacan's theory of identification. Thus, in order to find the beginning of the newly formed relationship through the process of initiation, this paper interprets the process of conversion and the structure of the rites of initiation studied in anthropology through the lens of the theory of Oedipus by Freud and Lacan. Subsequently, focusing on the final stage of Oedipus, the identification process, we will investigate the correlation between the rite of Christian initiation and the construction of Christian subject. Specifically, the aspect of identification that functions at qualitatively different stages in the rite of Christian initiation in accordance with RCIA is reviewed by Freud's theory of identification. Next, applying Lacan's theory of identification, it is suggested that a religious ego and a religious subject are born in the rite of Christian initiation.
The imaginary ego is formed through imaginary identification, which constitutes the religious ego at the individual level. The ego ideal is formed through symbolic identification and constitutes a religious subject at the social level. The religious ego is becoming formed through conscious identification with the image of God, and with the ideological and emotional aspects of the teachings of church. On the other hand, the religious subject is becoming constructed through unconscious identification with the logos of God, and builds a symbolic relationship with God and church as a member of the church community while sharing the same values in law and doctrine at the level of the unconscious. Since the subject is a comprehensive register that includes the ego, the religious subject at the social level also coordinates the religious ego at the individual level. In this way, while becoming a Christian subject, both the world of imaginary religion and the world of symbolic religion are incorporated in the subject. This paper investigates the process of forming the identity as a Christian as the aspects of otherness and subjectivity, the conscious and the unconscious, and the individual and the social, in a comprehensive manner.
