흥사단 원동임시위원부의 조직 목적과 활동 (Organizational Purpose and Activities of Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee)

초록

본 논문은 안창호가 1920년 중국 상해에서 조직한 흥사단 원동임시위원부에 관하여 서술한 것이다. 기존 연구에서는 흥사단 원동임시위원부의 독립운동을 미주 흥사단의 수양운동과 동일한 것으로 파악했다. 그 결과 흥사단 원동임시위원부의 독립운동 성격을 명확히 파악하기 어려웠다. 본 논문에서는 흥사단 원동임시위원부를 미주 흥사단 및 흥사단 국내지부 역할을 했던 수양동맹회와 구분하여 살펴봄으로써 흥사단 원동임시위원부의 독립운동을 재조명하고자 했다.
첫 번째로 원동임시위원부의 ‘원동(遠東)’이 지칭하는 지역을 알아보고, 미주에서 ‘원동’을 어떻게 인식했는지 정리함으로써 원동임시위원부의 조직 배경을 살펴보았다. 또한 1924년 이후로 원동임시위원부의 관할 범위에서 ‘국내’가 분리되는 과정을 정리함으로써 1924년 이후 흥사단 국내지부 역할을 했던 수양동맹회와 흥사단 원동임시위원부의 활동을 구분 지었다.
두 번째로 1924년 이후 흥사단 원동임시위원부의 관할 범위에서 ‘국내’가 분리되었다는 점에 착안하여 1926년 국내에서 발간된 잡지 『동광(東光)』의 발간 주체를 명확히 했다. 『동광(東光)』의 발간 주체가 원동임시위원부가 아닌 수양동우회라는 점을 확인하여 두 단체의 활동을 구분했다.
마지막으로 흥사단 원동임시위원부가 대한민국 임시정부 유지를 위해 노력한 활동을 살펴봄으로써 원동임시위원부의 독립운동 성격을 드러내고자 했다. 흥사단 원동임시위원부는 1923년 국민대표회의 이후 권위가 하락한 대한민국 임시정부를 유지시키고자 새로운 내각을 조각했다. 1926년 이후에는 임시정부경제후원회를 조직하고, 독립운동 세력을 결집시키고자 ‘일대혁명당(一大革命黨)’ 조직에 앞장섰다.

영어초록

This paper examined the Far Eastern Committee of the Young Korean Academy, organized by Ahn Chang-ho in Shanghai. The previous research regarded the independence movement of Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee as identical to the ‘suyang(修養)’ movement by Young Korean United States Committee. As a result, it was hard to clearly identify the characteristics of the independence movement carried out by Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee. In response, this paper distinguished the Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee from Suyangdongmaenghoe(修養同盟會), which played a role as Young Korean United States Committee and Young Korean United States Committee of Young Korean Academy, to re-spotlight on the independence movement of the Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee.
First, this paper investigated the region referred by “Far East” and organized how the American branch perceived “Far East” to explore the background of organizing Far Eastern Committee. This paper also investigated the process of separating “Domestic Area” from Far Eastern Committee since 1924 in order to distinguish the activities of Far Eastern Committee and Suyangdongmaenghoe, which played a role as the domestic branch of a Young Korean Academy since 1924.
Secondly, this paper focused on the point that “Domestic Area” was separated from the scope of Far Eastern Committee since 1924 and clarified the publisher of Dongkwang(東光) published in Korea in 1926. This paper confirmed that Dongkwang magazine was published by Suyangdonguhoe(修養同友會) to show the difference in the activities of the two organizations.
Lastly, this paper looked through the efforts made by the Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee to maintain the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea to reveal its characteristics related to the independence movement. When the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea lost its power after the meeting of national representatives in 1923, the Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee planned a new cabinet to maintain the provisional government. After 1926, Young Korean Academy Far Eastern Committee organized Association for Supporting Provisional Government and led the organization of a revolutionary party to assemble the independence movement powers.
